The beautiful prayer AVE MARIA, melody by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) based on PRELUDE IN C by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Adapted beautifully for pedal harp, with alto voice (vocal range from G below middle C, to the second E above middle C). Voice part could be sung by a baritone an octave lower than written. Flute, violin or oboe (playing an octave higher than written) may be substituted for the voice. There is an optional cello part (doubling the low notes of the harp part), so it can be played as a duo OR a trio. Perfect for any Christian occasion: Christmastime, funerals, weddings (especially the 'Marian presentation' of some Catholic weddings, in which the bride offers flowers to a statue of Virgin Mary). About 4 minutes and 20 seconds long with the repeat (or 2 minutes and 10 seconds long if you don't take the repeat, but go directly to the second ending). The PDF includes ALL three parts. The harp part also shows the vocal part on a small staff. There is a separate part (included) for the voice (or flute or violin or oboe) and a separate part (included) for the cello. The layout is such that if you can print out double-sided, the harp part and the vocal part have front and back covers. The cello part is only one page. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.6535-E). Marian Variations for harp solo was written for and is dedicated to harpist Ruth Inglefield, Professor of Harp at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1975, I was a student in Dr. Inglefield's Music History class at Bowling Green State University, where I was pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Composition. Dr. Inglefield arranged for me to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which I did from 1975-78, making me one of her last composition students and utterly changing my life. This piece is written in gratitude for Dr. Inglefield's vision and generosity.The work is based on my own Ave Maria for SATB chorus which was commissioned in 1991 by the San Francisco male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Each of the four variations is based on the main melody of the Ave Maria and is separated by interludes built of contrasting material, all leading to a literal statement of the motet after the fourth variation. Thus, though the piece is largely intended for use in solo recitals, it could be played as part of a liturgical service where the motet is also sung. I am grateful to Sonja Inglefield for her expert and detailed editing of the score. Harpists Steve Main and Michael Rado also offered valuable suggestions. -David Conte.

The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time, and juxtaposes vocal movements based upon Latin prayers with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects). The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic Mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the 'sins of the world,' and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella. The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which I believe touches us on a deep level. As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness, unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists. In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: â??La Cucarachaâ?, â??Cielito Lindoâ?, â??De Coloresâ?, and â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?, all available here.
