Because of this it's been on my mind for a long time to write a funeral song, but it was somehow just never the right time until just a few weeks ago when this one came pouring out in 5 minutes flat [which does not happen often, I can assure you!]. The culmination of years of playing for funerals, a bachelor degree in theology and sacred music, and many more years of writing and playing music through good times and also times full of grief, Lord of All Our Days is my very best and heartfelt attempt to serve those who are also dealing with the absolute heartache of loss, be it the acute, fresh grieving of just losing someone or the flashbacks that come time and time again, years and even decades later.This song carefully and tenderly handles the true earth-shaking grief that it is to lose someone you love, while holding out a strong hope of the life to come for those who trust God. Ken Litton (ASCAP)Demo & Accompaniment track .mp3 Those who have the good fortunate to hear Gustav Holst’s arrangement of PERSONENT HODIE as a choral processional with its engaging melody, measured gait and echoed text have never forgotten the magical moment—and were never really ready for it to end. Hailing from the The Oxford Book of Carols this German plainsong melody—from the Piae Cantones, 1583—has made its way into strong choral and worship traditions at Advent/Christmas.Of all the current texts and arrangements available, this version honors Holst’s unison accompanied setting in an unexpected subtle jazz styling, with the hope of bringing additional range to its established place in advent literature (both in terms of style and in appeal to a variety of age groups). And, On This Day Earth Shall Ring, translated by Jane M. Joseph (text in the public domain) gives it just the traditional touch needed for Jazz Hodie (On this Day).This SATB setting of the tune offers accompaniment designed for piano or organ, optional acoustic/string bass and an optional part for a single player involving three of the percussionist section best friends in the : the suspended cymbal, mallets (vibraphone, marimba or bells or bell lyre), and a small triangle. It should be noted that an electronic piano/synthesizer voice could substitute well for the mallets and the use of handbells is also viable. Perfect for Lessons & Carols presentations!The unison singing and bell-tone echoes of the first stanza/refrain soon give way to smooth, contrasting jazz harmony. The choral ranges are very much within the reach of the average choir and the voicings vary from unison to three and four parts, followed by a return to the character of the opening. The piece builds toward a close with a choral ascent in the final bars and a bass line reminiscent of the first verse, but with an extra jazz twist. But, it can easily be restarted for processional use by simply dropping back into the C minor introduction’s bass line. Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. As their origin would suggest the lyrics can be very down to earth. Joseph and Mary (Josep i Maria) has an English lyric which, like the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original. If Not Now, When? gets its title from the novel by Primo Levi, the Italian author who both survived life in Auschwitz and fought the continued German military presence in Italy with the Resistance after the Italian surrender to the Allies in September 1943. Levi meant that revolution and the overthrow of tyranny should never be 'put off until tomorrow'. If you believe you are on the side of right, then 'seize the day'- tomorrow may be too late. The inspiration for INNW? grew from research I was doing into an early song by Alban Berg called An Leukon which Berg wrote in 1907 while a student of Arnold Schoenberg. In delving into the kind of world which Berg inhabited in the Vienna of 100 years ago, I was fascinated by the café culture* which played a pivotal role in the lives of most artists: not only composers, but also writers, painters, architects and journalists. They swirled around the fashionable 'watering holes' sucking up current thoughts and ideas, high on Viennese coffee, cigar smoke and idealism! I envisaged a play which tried to encapsulate all this and wrote a few scenes with characters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Steuermann, Pisk, Kraus, Gropius and Altenberg heatedly discussing music, art and poetry over large cups of milky coffee. This grew into the framework for INNW? which, to paraphrase Pirandello's play about characters seeking an author, is a 'play without words in several scenes'. The piece is organised into 8 short movements or 'scenes' showing the 'Schoenberg cirle' sharing their radical and daring ideas and the shock or delight (or both simultaneously) with which those ideas are greeted. The first, which happens to be the longest, is rooted in conventional tonality. It begins with a fanfare in D flat major ('aux armes, citoyens!'), then seeks a 'freer' tonality by means of the 'emancipation of the semitone' only to capitulate in the central section and, finally, to 'fall back to earth' by winding down in G sharp minor. These 'scenes' are not meant to represent particular composers. They are, however, meant to represent the kinds of directions in which music could progress, given the 'breakdown' or 'stretching to its limits' of traditional harmony which had occurred in the previous 10 to 20 years. So many ways forward were promulgated, with one after another extraordinary, and often unexpected, futuristic musical panoramas glimpsed momentarily. My aim is to demonstrate which directions they decided they could head in having cleared the 'overgrown' path before them. * I even discovered that, around this time, in the Café Central, a certain Leon (Lev) Bronstein, otherwise known as Leon Trotsky, banished by the Okhrana (Imperial secrect police) from his native Russia, would spend all day in a back room playing chess. How delicious, I thought, if Schoenberg had ever brushed passed Trotsky or, indeed, had ever spoken to him: the one planning political and the other musical revolution!

For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. The cantata „Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106- „God`s Time Is The Very Best Time, ranks among Bach's most important works. It is a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve. The Actus tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world. Although Bach's manuscript is lost, the work is agreed to be one of the earliest Bach cantatas, probably composed during the year he spent in Mühlhausen 1707/1708 as organist of theDivi Blasil church, at the age of 22. Various funerals known to have taken place at this time have been proposed as the occasion for the composition, for example that of his uncle Tobias Lämmerhirt from his mother's family, who died inErfurt on 10 August 1707, and that of Adolph Strecker, a former mayor of Mühlhausen, whose funeral was 16 September 1708. The earliest surviving manuscript, in the hand of Christian Friedrich Penzel, was copied in 1768 after Bach's death. It introduced the title Actus tragicus. The cantata was published in 1876 as part of the first complete edition of Bach's works: the Bach-Gesellschaft-Ausgabe, edited by Wilhelm Rust. The text consists of different Bible passages from the Old and New Testament, as well as individual verses of hymns by Martin Lither and Adam Reusner, which all together refer to finiteness, preparation for death and dying. The Arrangement is relatively easy to perform, also appropriate for beginners. It is an ideal piece for advanced performers, this music touches deep into the Soul. The piece was arranged for modern instruments, I introduced some embellishments and interpretation symbols thus shortening the length of some notes, but no notes where otherwise changed or omitted in this arrangement. Also the original placement of the voices is totally respected, the structure of the piece was simply left as it was composed in its original form. Bach scored the instrumental parts for a small ensemble of Baroque instruments two recorders, two violas da gamba and continuo. I propose an interpretation for a modern string orquestra or a string quintet in this arrangement. You should feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills, Your taste and Soul. If the orquestra only has one double bass I would recommend you to reenforce the bass with a cello. It can be very well performed by a „string quintet- a string quartet with a double bass. Have fun! It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, in a serious concert hall, or a funeral, in Easter or even Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events. When performed Live It will give you back a great feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. The score was written on Finale. Composed at The Hermitage Artist Retreat. I wrote Sharktooth Frenzy for Danny Holt in January 2014, while in residence at The Hermitage Artist Retreat in Manasota Key, Florida, a special place, paleotologically, because fossilized shark teeth from up to 50 million years ago wash up on the beach here every day. Around 50 million years ago, Florida was completely under the ocean, and layers of limestone accumulated to create the bed rock of Florida. Starting around 30 million years ago, as the Earth cooled, sea levels dropped and Orange Island emerged in what is now north central Florida. 10 million years later, in the Miocene period, tectonic activity forced uplift around Orange Island and Florida began to resemble the land mass it is today. The coastal area was still covered by a shallow sea, but land animals lived inland. Further north the Appalachian Mountains were forming and sediment was flowing into Florida making very nutrient rich waters, which sank to the bottom of these shallow seas entombing dead marine animals and teeth from sharks (sharks loose teeth frequently, going through up to 30,000 in their lives). This continued until around 5 million years ago. There is an abundance of these fossilized teeth and other bones in the Peace River Formation and Myakka River, which washes out into the gulf each day, and then subsequently the fossils wash up onto the beaches of Manasota Key and Venice Beach. So while I was composing this piece for Danny, I was also obsessively collecting shark teeth. I’d go out each day as the tide was retracting and collect hundreds, actually thousands, of teeth. And it was a bit of a frenzy. So I decided this piece had to be about this process, collecting as many teeth as I could find and coming back to write music!About the ComposerChristine Southworth (b. 1978) is a composer and video artist based in Lexington, Massachusetts, dedicated to creating music born from a cross-pollination of sonic ideas.
