The Water Is Wide (also known as O Waly, Waly) is an old folk song of Scottish origin and like so many other folk songs exists in many variants. The lyrics partly date back to the 1600s but the song remains ever-popular today. This attractive arrangement is for flute, B flat clarinet and piano and is intended for intermediate players and for clarinet players who can work easily around the break. The arrangement would be useful for student or professional recitals, end-of-semester concerts or would make a popular encore number for a concert. It would make a popular addition to any events with a Scottish flavor or romantic themes. The imagery of the lyrics describes the challenges of love and has been reflected in the lyrical clarinet part of this arrangement which also makes considerable use of the chalumeau register. The folk song is the same one that the British composer Benjamin Britten arranged for voice and piano. This new arrangement is sure to go down well with audiences.

The Serenade No. 10 for winds in B-flat major, K. 361/370a, is a serenade by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart scored for thirteen instruments: twelve winds and string bass. The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “dark†instruments– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is thefocal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with muchmaterial best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,and bitter tone throughout.Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and therest of the ensemble. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844681). Maggiolata is the Italian name of an ancient Spring Festival celebrated on May 1st, hence the subtitle Song of May. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard which was originally written for Viola and Piano. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. I have scored it for a Clarinet Octet; 1 Bb Clarinet solo, accompanied by 4 Bb Clarinet parts, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet parts, and 1 Bb Bass Clarinet part. The Soloist has the melody throughout. The other Clarinets and Alto Clarinets have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the Bass Clarinet sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced Clarinet ensemble sound which utilizes the full range of the instrument. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.9 page score, 1 page parts; 17 pages total5 minutes with repeat

Extinction Events (2nd movement - It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players, although the 2nd movement is easier. This is the second movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Cuckoos are quiet reminders of spring when they first appear at the Marsden, United Kingdom area where they have a Cuckoo fair every year. Their habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate as their numbers slowly decrease. In the music, the cuckoos in the 3rd clarinet part get progressively sad sounding and simply disappear. Published by Vanessa Klassen (A0.1135165). “Just a Closer Walk with Thee†dates back to the southern African-American churches of the nineteenth century, frequently being performed as part of a traditional New Orleans-style funeral march. Composer Kenneth Morris heard a train station porter singing the song while traveling from Kansas City to Chicago in 1940. The music became so prominent in his mind that Morris exited his train and took a different train back to the previous station to ask the porter to sing it again. Morris wrote down the music and lyrics and had the song published. The song soon became a standard in both the gospel and jazz genres and has since been recorded by numerous artists. The original author or composer is unknown. This arrangement for clarinet quintet is closely based on Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of the song which was featured on her 1967 album, “Brighten the Corner.†Ella’s voice is represented in the Clarinet 1 part which has been transcribed exactly as she sung. There is also a simplified Clarinet 1 part which is easier to read and allows the soloist more freedom to embellish as desired. The accompanying parts are the background vocals and upright bass, with the light piano riffs in the E♠Clarinet part. The E♠part may be omitted for an easier quartet version. The biggest challenge in this arrangement is the balance as the solo is often in the lower register of the clarinet (below the break).
