Live recording: Daniela Carlino -Syrah ensemble, Palermo 2017Parte Terza: il sogno come evasione dalla precarietà della vita L'ultima parte è la più complessa della composizione ed è basata su un testo di Guido Gozzano: La via del rifugio . Si tratta di una poesia molto articolata che offre parecchi spunti quasi teatrali: il poeta si trova disteso a terra, nella campagna piemontese, mentre due bambine, nipoti, figlie della sorella, giocano cantando un'antica filastrocca. Il poeta alterna le sue riflessioni sulla vita e sulle grandi domande dell'esistenza ai versi di questa filastrocca e alla descrizione dei giochi delle bambine, i girotondi e la cattura di una farfalla, che tanto coinvolge le piccole. Al fine di rendere meglio la teatralità del brano l'autore ha affidato il testo della filastrocca a due voci infantili e le riflessioni del poeta alla voce di soprano (con l'eccezione di qualche frammento di quest'ultimo tipo recitato dalle bambine stesse). La struttura del testo, con ritorni frequenti di alcune brevi strofe, ha suggerito una forma musicale che si avvicina al tradizionale rondò, in cui in particolare un refrain ritorna in maniera sempre nuova alternandosi a vari episodi. La melodia della filastrocca, elaborazione di una tipica melodia tradizionale è il refrain principale e viene sempre variato nella combinazione delle due voci e degli strumenti, e nell'armonizzazione. Un altro episodio frequente, anch'esso rivisitato nei vari ritorni, è quello del primo intervento dell'autore: socchiusi gli occhi sto seduto sul trifoglio, e vedo un quatrifoglio che non raccoglierò, nelle sue varianti testuali. Il brano vuole anche essere anche una sintesi dei precedenti (Parte Prima e Seconda), riproponendo riferimenti importanti ai temi principali uditi, ma anche a frammenti secondari, che compaiono all'interno del tessuto musicale per suggerire stati d'animo o immagini simili a quelle originarie del brano da cui sono state estrapolate o comunque servono a mettere i brani a confronto e creare delle correlazioni musicali e concettuali.

Leonardo Leo - Dixit Dominus a 2 cori, 1741, Quarto movimento Transcribed by Guido Menestrina Celebre compositore e capostipite della bella scuola napoletana del XVIII secolo, nacque a San Vito degli Schiavoni, presso Brindisi, in provincia di Terra d'Otranto. De Leo avrebbe compiuto i suoi studi musicali al conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini, sotto la direzione di Nicola Fago, soprannominato il tarentino[1]. Girolamo Chigi, maestro di Cappella di San Giovanni in Laterano, allievo e amico di Pitoni, dice che de Leo si recò a Roma e che vi studiò il contrappunto sotto la guida di questo sapiente maestro. Di ritorno a Napoli, de Leo ottenne il posto di secondo maestro al conservatorio della Pietà . Nel 1716 fu nominato organista della cappella reale e l'anno successivo venne designato per occupare il posto di maestro di cappella della chiesa di Santa Maria della Solitaria, per la quale scrisse molta musica. Nel 1719 fece rappresentare la Sofonisba, sua prima opera seria che fu ben accolta e in cui il carattere espressivo del suo talento si faceva già notare. I biografi che sostengono abbia insegnato al conservatorio di Loreto s'ingannano, fu infatti prima al conservatorio della Pietà , poi a quello di Sant'Onofrio, dove ebbe per allievi alcuni dei compositori più illustri del XVIII secolo, come Jommelli e Piccinni. Non morì nel 1743, come dice lo stesso Piccinni, in una breve notizia biografica sul suo maestro, né nel 1742 come afferma Burney, ma nel 1744. Il marchese di Villarosa, riferisce che de Leo sarebbe stato colpito da apoplessia, mentre era intento a scrivere un'aria buffa de La finta frascatana che comincia con queste parole: Voi par che gite/di palo in frasca. Lo si trovò con la testa appoggiata sul suo clavicembalo e si credette, in un primo momento che dormisse, ma in realtà aveva già cessato di vivere. Leo era di taglia media, colorito bruno, occhio vivo e temperamento ardente. Sebbene fosse abitualmente piuttosto serioso, non mancava di urbanità e gentilezza. Infaticabile nella professione, passava spesso la maggior parte delle notti a comporre e si trovava sempre in vena- Amava le sue opere, ma rendeva giustizia al merito dei suoi rivali quando occorreva. Morì rimpianto da tutti, lasciando a lungo il ricordo di sé e delle sue opere, nonché della scuola di cui fu uno dei fondatori. Considerazioni sull'artista Leo condivide col suo predecessore Alessandro Scarlatti e i contemporanei Nicola Porpora, Francesco Durante e Francesco Feo, la gloria di aver fondato la scuola di Napoli, da cui sono usciti, durante tutto un secolo, una moltitudine di compositori drammatici di prim'ordine. Egli stesso fu non soltanto un grande professore, ma un artista dei più dotati. La sua musica da chiesa non ha meno maestà di quella di Durante, tocca il cuore e fa nascere degli slanci di tenera devozione. Il suo Miserere a due cori è una composizione tanto notevole per l'elevatezza dei sentimenti che l'hanno dettata, quanto per la purezza di stile in cui si riconoscono le tracce della scuola cantoria romana in cui studiò. Nella sua musica sacra nello stile accompagnato e concertato, de Leo conserva la semplicità e si fa ammirare per la bellezza dell'espressione, come l'Ave Maris Stella per voce di soprano e orchestra o il Credo a quattro. Egualmente notevole nel genere teatrale, de Leo è sempre nobile, spesso patetico e appassionato ed è con questi mezzi, molto semplici, che perviene a grandi effetti. Thinking Händel è un tributo al grande compositore Georg Friedrich Händel, coetaneo di Johann Sebastian Bach, che fu tra i più illustri rappresentanti del barocco musicale. Scrisse opere, oratori e musica strumentale, assimilando gli stili del Settecento che fuse in una sintesi personale e unitaria.I primi successiHändel nacque nel 1685 a Halle, in Germania, da una famiglia senza tradizioni musicali. Iniziò da bambino lo studio della musica, dimostrando subito un grande talento come compositore e organista. All'università di Halle intraprese anche studi giuridici. Nel 1703 si stabilì ad Amburgo, dove lavorò come violinista e dove ebbero luogo le prime esecuzioni di sue musiche, tra cui l'opera Almira, regina di Castiglia (1705).Negli anni successivi compì diversi viaggi in Italia, in Germania e a Londra, dove nel 1711 fu rappresentata con grande successo la sua opera Rinaldo. Nonostante sia oggi conosciuto soprattutto per gli oratori e la musica strumentale, ai suoi tempi Händel fu molto apprezzato per le opere teatrali, prevalentemente composte secondo il modello dell'opera seria italiana (forme musicali). Ambientata in epoca classica, di argomento letterario o di ambientazione mitologica, l'opera seria alterna, in lingua italiana, recitativi e arie. I recitativi, con un'intonazione vicina alla lingua parlata, servivano a far procedere l'azione ed erano accompagnati dal cembalo e a volte dall'orchestra. La versione orchestrale è quella oggi più conosciuta e molto più spesso eseguita.L'arrangimento, si basa sul Corale di Sant’Antonio, composizione per ensemble di fiati, all’epoca attribuita erroneamente a Franz Joseph Haydn ed ancora oggi di origine incerta; i fiati e il pizzicato degli archi esaltano il suo carattere corale. Il tema è impostato su due periodi asimmetrici, entrambi con ripetizioni segnate da ritornelli: il primo periodo presenta due frasi di cinque battute ciascuna, il secondo è costituito da uno sviluppo in otto battute, una ripresa di quattro battute e un finale di sette. Sono due danze rinascimentali: Bransle de chevaux e Jouyssance vous donnerai, composte da Thoinot Arbeau, pseudonimo di Jehan Tabourot (Digione, 1519 – Langres, 1595).Il Tabourot fu nominato canonico della città di Langres (nei pressi di Digione) nel 1574. Grande appassionato della danza e con buone conoscenze musicali, decise di dedicarsi alla raccolta delle danze più diffuse ai suoi tempi e di annotarne i passi, la struttura e la musica. Perciò egli è celebre nell'ambito della storiografia della danza per aver scritto un trattato dal titolo Orchésographie et traité en forme de dialogue par lequel toutes personnes peuvent facilement apprendre et pratiquer l'honnête exercice des danses, ossia Orchésographie e trattato in forma di dialogo attraverso il quale tutti possono facilmente imparare e praticare l'onesto esercizio delle danze. Il trattato fu pubblicato una prima volta nel 1589 ed ebbe in seguito altre edizioni, posteriori alla morte dell'autore (seconda edizione 1596). Il trattato - come è annunciato nel titolo - è scritto in forma di dialogo tra l'Arbeau e un immaginario allievo, di nome Capriol e, oltre alla descrizione di numerose danze in uso ai tempi dell'autore, contiene le notazioni delle melodie che accompagnavano dette danze, istruzioni per suonare alcuni strumenti musicali, indicazioni sull'accompagnamento polifonico, teorie, cenni storici e molte illustrazioni, ottenute con il metodo della xilografia, che rappresentano le differenti fasi di esecuzione delle danze.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video.The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on March 19, 1892. The suite became instantly popular with almost every number encored at its premiere.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could also have the opportunity to play some of these wonderful compositions, originally scored for a full orchestra, and has arranged two of the selections, the popular March and the Russian Dance for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles.
