The Marines’ Hymn is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps and the oldest official song in the US Armed Forces, authorised for use by the Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1929. The lyrics for the hymn were written by an anonymous author prior to this and includes lines referencing famous battles such as “To the shores of Tripoli†referring to the First Barbary War and “The Halls of Montezuma†referencing the Battle of Chapultepec. The music, however, originates from the “Gendarmes’ Duet†from Offenbach's 1859 opera Genevieve de Brabant. Sammy Nestico, whilst best known as a composer, arranger, and conductor for the Count Basie Orchestra and as a prolific composer of television themes including shows such as M*A*S*H*, and Charlie’s Angels, was also the director of the U.S. Marine Band under both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1968, Nestico took the original version of the hymn and revamped it in his own inimitable style giving us Apotheosis - Marines' Hymn. I give it my heart… a Marine's heart – Sammy Nestico. Not many pieces about space can also be said to have been played in space, but 'Fly Me to the Moon' can claim to be one of those. Originally entitled 'In Other Words', the song was written by Bart Howard in 1954 and dedicated to his partner of 58 years Thomas Fowler. Howard, a career musician and notable piano accompanist had collaborated with many other artists, including Cole Porter, but sadly had never gained individual acclaim. A publisher once suggested that his songs were too complex and when Howard was encouraged to write a simpler tune he produced Fly Me to the Moon in 20 minutes; and the rest is history.Notable artists have covered the song, including Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Paul Anka, Nancy Wilson, the pop band Westlife and transcribed into Urdu by the artist Alamgir. Howard estimated that before 1964 there had been over 100 versions of the song had been recorded. However, it was Frank Sinatra that made it a global success in 1964. With the legendary composer/arranger Quincy Jones and jazz icon Count Basie, Sinatra produced a sensationally swinging version of the song that captured listeners attention, and later NASA, who would use it on Apollo 10 and 11 missions. It was performed by Diana Krall at the 40th Anniversary of the landings and also, in a more somber setting, at the funeral of space legend Neil Armstrong.

Swinging Shepherd Blues is a well-known tune by Moe Koffman, originally titled Blues a la Canadiana and renamed Swinging (or 'Swingin') Shepherd Blues in l957 when it was recorded by the composer, playing the flute, for the LP Hot and Cool Sax. . Released as a single (Jubilee 5311), it was a hit internationally (Billboard magazine recorded it as peaking at 23rd position in 1958). Among more than 300 recordings of the tune are versions by Count Basie, Herbie Mann, Mantovani, and David Rose. A vocal rendition, with lyrics by Rhoda Roberts and Kenny Jacobson, has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, and more recently by Natalie Cole. The tune has been recorded by various Canadians, from Oscar Peterson to the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. Koffman used Swinging Shepherd Blues as his signature tune until 2000.
