After completing his studies with Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer Máthiás Seiber (1905-1960) first worked as a musician in a dance orchestra on an ocean liner which gave him the opportunity to listen to jazz music in New York. From 1928 he taught the first jazz class worldwide at Dr. Koch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. In the winter term of 1928/29, 19 students had registered with whom he gave a public concert on 3 March 1929 which was broadcast by Radio Frankfurt. After the Nazis had seized power, the jazz class was dissolved, Seiber lost his job and emigrated to London. In 1932 he wrote his piano cycle 'Leichte Tänze' (Easy Dances), one of the early examples of the adoption of jazz forms and styles in so-called serious music. The present arrangement for orchestra is easily playable and is aimed at youth and amateur orchestras. Instrumentation: 2 flutes, clarinet, oboe (ad lib.), alto saxophone, trumpet, bassoon and strings. Movements: Cake Walk - Novelty Foxtrot - Gipsy Tango - Waltz - Walzer - Blues - Charleston.

The Dance Suite for Three Trombones & Tuba was commissioned by the Low Brass section of the Vancouver Opera and aided with a grant from the British Columbia Arts Council.The Suite is in three movements titled: 1. Boogie / Valse 2. T'anguish 3. Louie's Jig The Boogie/Valse is exactly that, a movement in A-B-A form with the Valse being sandwiched by the Boogie section. The T'anguish is a Tango with a seductive melody mostly carried in the 1st Trombone. They are each about 2 and a half minutes long.So they would make a very enjoyable interlude in your concert, or a challenging and rewarding project for an unusual trio.They are intended for advanced high school or college level musicians, or the equivalent community orchestra members.The Dance is in 6/8 time, with a light bounce. We are honored to introduce her first published work for organ and piano duet. The four movements of this picturesque suite may be performed together as a single work or as separate pieces. Harpsichord or synthesizer may be used instead of piano. The composer would encourage the experimental use of the synthesizer, using registration that is bold and colorful. Moods vary considerably in each of the four movements: Praise, Dance, Song, and Prayer. Two copies are required for performance.

Composed in 1875, Grieg later extracted eight movements to create two four-movement suites, Suite No. 1, Op. 46 in 1888 and Suite No. 2, Op. 55 in 1893. Anitra’s Dance, the third movement in Suite No. 1, Op. 46, accompanies the lively and graceful Anitra as she dances after encountering Peer. This arrangement for woodwind quartet works well for any program. This arrangement includes: Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1, & Oboe 2 (included are optional Clarinet 1 & 2 parts in lieu of oboes). Satie: Parade - Final & Suite au Prélude de rideau rougeArranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet)The concluding music for Erik Satie's Ballet Parade.Other movements from Parade are available.Background info:Parade is a ballet choreographed by Leonide Massine, with music by Erik Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau. The ballet was composed in 1916–17 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The ballet premiered on Friday, May 18, 1917, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet.The ballet was remarkable for several reasons. It was the first collaboration between Satie and Picasso, and also the first time either of them had worked on a ballet, thus making it the first time either collaborated with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes.The plot of Parade incorporated and was inspired by popular entertainments of the period, such as Parisian music-halls and American silent-films.Much of the settings used in Parade's plot occurred outside of the formal Parisian theater, depicting the streets of Paris.The plot reproduces various elements of everyday life such as the music hall and fairground.Before Parade, the use of popular entertainment materials was considered unsuitable for the elite world of the ballet.The plot of Parade composed by Cocteau includes the failed attempt of a troupe of performers to attract audience members to view their show.Some of Picasso's Cubist costumes were in solid cardboard, allowing the dancers only a minimum of movement.The score contained several noise-making instruments (typewriter, foghorn, an assortment of milk bottles, pistol, and so on), which had been added by Cocteau (somewhat to the dismay of Satie).It is supposedthat such additions by Cocteau showed his eagerness to create a succès de scandale, comparable to that of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps which had been premiered by the Ballets Russes some years before, and caused no less scandal.Although Parade was quite revolutionary, bringing common street entertainments to the elite, being scorned by audiences and being praised by critics,nonetheless many years later Stravinsky could still pride himself in never having been topped in the matter of succès de scandale.The ragtime contained in Parade would later be adapted for piano solo and attained considerable success as a separate piano piece.The finale is a rapid ragtime dance in which the whole cast [makes] a last desperate attempt to lure the audience in to see their showI have omitted the  percussion in my arrangement of the finale.The premiere of the ballet resulted in a number of scandals. One faction of the audience booed, hissed, and was very unruly, nearly causing a riot before they were drowned out by enthusiastic applause.Many of their objections were focused on Picasso's cubist design, which was met with cries of sale boche.Arranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet).

It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video.The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works.
