This arrangement in A Major is very easy and playable and can be ready for performance with minimal rehearsal time. Written especially for young string students it will make your group sound fantastic and will without question be an excellent addition to your Christmas concert. Music does not have to be difficult to sound good. If you are looking for something playable and full sounding you found it in this string orchestra series for young players composed by a retired music teacher who actually worked with young players. You will find this composition keeps all instruments in 1st position and utilizes three part harmony that benefits ensembles lacking adequate instrumentation. Viola and 2nd violin are doubled as are cello and contrabass. There can be as little as one player per part or placing numerous players on each part will obviously produce a bigger and fuller sound. If this composition appeals to you please consider the many others in this string series. Greg Shapley #1984573. Published by Greg Shapley (A0.966354). Phrygian Swell is an easy to play round for recorders in three parts (it may also be played by many other instruments). It is written for near-beginners, but its designed so that the sum is greater that its parts. Included in this score are two versions. The original changes time signature every bar (eventually getting up to 23/4). It plays with a number of concepts, all designed as educational tools. Firstly, it is written entirely in the mode known as Phrygian. This mode has a distinctive mystical sound primarily due to its first interval – which is a minor second. Secondly, it has been written to get players thinking about time without being too challenging (so despite the change of time signatures, most notes are just crotchets). Another educational facet of these changing time signatures is that they ascend by primary numbers. Thirdly, being a round it gets young players used to playing different parts with other players, while initially being able to rehearse altogether. Fourthly, this piece is comprised entirely of scales, but it doesn't just sound like an exercise (I hope). The second version, barred in 4/4 is exactly the same as the first, except for the rebarring. This is done in case following the continually changing time signatures is too difficult (although it does defeat the purpose of the piece to a certain extent). This version of this piece was written for three alto/treble (transposed from the original for descant/soprano or tenor), but due to its simplicity and range, could be played by many other instruments.

The low register version is ideal for players with limited experience - it stays entirely in the low chalumeau register and doesn’t cross the break at all. The high register version (an octave higher) is mainly in the clarion register, but it does cross the break here and there, and requires a little more skill.The Guitar is tuned down to 6=D and has the 3:3:2 rhythm that gives this piece its real sense of fun. Although the music reaches the fifth position in places, it’s generally in first and second position to give access to a deeper bass-line. Note that the guitar part requires a Capo on fret 1, and the position markings are relative to the Capo. It is well suited for string trio recitals and chamber concerts. The music follows a redemptive arc, a journey from dark to light, from chaos to repose. It’s not meant to be auto-biographical but to be meaningful to anyone who has known the sweetness of overcoming personal brokenness, whether it might be addiction, self-destruction, religious deliverance, or other crisis. It approaches the topic from the perspective of overcoming self. The harmonies, rhythms, and timbres of the piece strive to portray this transition. The age-old metaphors of darkness for ill and light for good are featured characters in the music. In particular, the title refers to a line from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus, “You were once darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.†“You Were Once Darkness†uses the melody from a very familiar Christmas carol but it is highly camouflaged and difficult to distinguish. Although it forms the backbone of the music it also, as our own backbones do, remains mostly unobserved. Clues do peak through the darkness, so to speak, from time to time so the attentive listener may discern the melody by the end. The music sounds edgy and unfamiliar even though it only uses the notes of the C-major scale (all the white keys on the piano). This is achieved using techniques developed by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt which employ rules-based writing, typically using a simple scale over a single major or minor accompanying chord. The concept sounds simple but that does not make it easy to write or to play. The melody and lyrics are like the original as far as I can tell, but I did make changes to the harmony. Usually these changes to the harmony are to enhance the word painting, or to have it be more idiomatic to guitar. A version like this is ideal for someone who wants to play a very fancy version of the song on solo guitar, though adding vocals in should still be fairly easy. I personally sing a lot better if I can play the melody first on guitar because then I know exactly what I'm doing. Versions like these can really be as simple or as complex as you want, if you want something simple, just play the chord diagrams and sing!1. Guitar Arrangement Lead Sheet Style2. Guitar Tab 3. Chord Charts 4. Less stereotypical chords 5. Fingerings and letter names added to aid in sight-reading 6. Voice leading considerations 7. Making the music idiomatic for guitarTips:1. Notes with the stem direction going down are background harmonies that should be played quietly. This hidden meaning tends to only happen with polyphonic instruments such as piano and guitar. You'll eventually notice this anyways because there is no lyric underneath the note.1. Slurs are notated to the make the music easier and better sounding for guitar not vocals, though of course it often mimicks slurs similiar to a vocalist.2. Fmaj7(#11) is not in the original and is a key change since it includes an F and not an F#.3. Sometimes it can look like the melody does not contain a key change, but then when you anaylze the letter names of the chords, you will find that there is indeed key changes in the chords. The Beatles is a good example of a band that does this often.4. E minor and G major chords technically only need 2 or 3 notes. This is one simple but effective strategy to have less cliche chords.5. The F(#5)(#11) chord in the second to last measure could probably be just an F major chord.6. The E natural in measure 42 could be an Eb if the harmony is too avant-garde for you. Made sense to me because of word painting and I wanted a keyless and dreamy feeling for the end. 7. G/B chords are arguably nicer than a full G chord, though of course the decision is ultimately up to. It is better because the chord is imperfect, it causes the audience to not clap too soon. I also only strum the chord up to where the vocal melody is happening, that way the main melody is always in the spot light, and I find songs are easier to sing this way.

For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. The left hand has had the octaves removed and replaced with a single note pattern to drive the piece along. It sounds just as good on a Keyboard or Synth as it does on Piano. To show the versatility of this arrangement the audio demo was made using a combination of piano and synth. It starts with just a piano then you will hear the synth fade in with different sounds being used for the left and right hand parts. It then fades back to piano. Note: the only notes you hear are the ones written in the score, showing even a simple arrangement sounds good with a little work. Try it for yourself!

If you want to learn (practice) only the easy verse, an optional ending is provided or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together.
