It is a tribute to the heritage of York’s railway industry and its workers, who over many years have placed the City of York at the heart of the UK’s railway network. The music does not attempt to depict the sounds of a train journey but I confess that some of the initial ideas for the composition came from seeing the mighty ‘Flying Scotsman’ locomotive laid out in pieces during its recent restoration and – to my eyes at least - resembling a the instruments of large and somewhat bizarre percussion orchestra. Northern Line was commissioned by York Railway Institute Brass Band and first performed by that band at York Theatre Royal in October 2009, conducted by Derek Warley.

He is sometimes known by the sobriquet The Austrian March King.He is best known for his 1893 march Unter dem Doppeladler or Under the Double Eagle, referring to the double eagle in the coat of arms of Austria-Hungary. The march became a favourite part of the repertoire of American composer and bandleader John Philip Sousa, whose band recorded it three times. The piece was the official regimental march of the Austrian Artillery Regiment Number 2 till its dissolution in 2007.The tune was parodied in the Benny Goodman recording Benjie's Bubble, and was also used for the well-known Monty Python's Flying Circus animation segment Conrad Poohs And His Dancing Teeth. The first part of the march is used in the 1992 computer game Great Naval Battles: North Atlantic 1939-1943 when Germany is selected in the gameplay.Wagner is also known for the Holzhackerbuam, also known as the Jolly Lumberjack Polka. This is the complete set of parts for a brass quintet arrangement of J.S. Bach’s chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme. The chorale was a 3-voice prelude modeled on part of Bach's earlier cantata by the same name, first performed in November 1731. The cantata was in turn is based on the hymn Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying, written by the German Lutheran pastor, composer, and lyricist Philipp Nicolai in 1598, which is typically used during the end-of-year or Advent season. This arrangement is intended for a brass quintet of varying skill level; the Trumpet 1 part does not exceed a brief high G, but an optional Piccolo Trumpet is available. The three voices of the chorale are purposely divided among the five brass parts, to avoid fatigue in any one part. The bass part is taken by the Euphonium player, assumed to have a four-valve instrument accommodating several lower notes, but a Tuba may also be substituted, one octave below written.
