ISBN 9790570484560.The Wounded Angel (2013) is written for piccolo, two flutes, alto flute and bass flute, and is dedicated to Christine Turellier, a professor of flute at the Lille Conservatory of Music (France) where the work was premiered. These pieces were inspired by a painting entitled The Wounded Angel (1967) by the visionary British artist Cecil Collins (1908-1990). His works have been the basis for a number of D'Angelo's compositions. For example, one of his latest pieces for orchestra takes its inspiration from Collins' painting The Angel of the Flowing Light (1968). In his extensive output the artist often used angels and fools as symbols of purity and wisdom. In the painting, the earthbound, winged, wounded angel is lying on its side with its eyes closed. Its colours blend in with the purplish colours of the earth. In the distance is a mountain shaped like a pyramid while the sky is filled with shades of orange. Just at the point where the mountain meets the bleak landscape we see the sun just rising. This angel has been injured and fallen to Earth and in its distress has to find a way of healing itself and ascending to its spiritual home. In this highly impressionistic piece the piccolo stands for the wounded angel. It has a three note motif and its wound is suggested by the semitone difference of the second note each time the motif is repeated. The piece is a voyage through all the states of mind the angel experiences. For example, there are moments of contemplation and peace where the alto and bass flutes play rocking rhythms in open fifths. The final bars of The Wounded Angel portray the gentle power of the angel to heal itself and return to the heavens. Here, following the motif of the gently rocking rhythms the piccolo plays two ascending fourths leading to a G sharp which has its resolution in the angels keynote A.

In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Only the first stanza and the refrain (which is sung twice) were approved in President Kuchma's official proclamation.This arrangement for Trombone Quintet, / Choir in the brass friendly key of d minor, is easily accessible to those students who play at the Adv. I Will Give Thanks to the Lord was composed in 1998 and is intended as a more contemporary option to the sung liturgy associated with the mainstream Christian church, while still maintaining the integrity of traditional liturgical elements. This setting is scored for handbells, two C instruments which double the voices, piano (or electronic keyboard), and bass guitar. The music may be performed with one or more instruments missing as frequently happens for church services. The file contains full score, instrumental parts, and a vocal only which may duplicated for congregational use. The complete setting is also available in a simplified version for piano only. Much of the liturgy is in the form of Call and Response, that is, a music leader sings a phrase and the congregation responds, often repeating the initial phrase exactly. There are two versions for the Nunc Dimittis, the congregational response following Holy Communion. The first is a paraphrase of Simeon’s exclamation at seeing the child Jesus. The second is the traditional text as found in Luke 2 with accompaniment on organ only.

Twenty-three sacred hymns and songs From the Foreword: Recent years have seen much increase in the activities of small and medium sized instrumental ensembles in schools at all grade levels, generally as an adjunct of band and orchestral programs.Many churches and Sunday Schools also use ensembles of various types in programs and services. Such groups are looking for playable music that is also interesting and worthwhile. This collection contains settings of sacred hymns and songs, and other selections, all of which should be usable in the church and the school. The hymn and song treatments are not just instrumentations of standard hymnal type, but are complete arrangements, using such devices as introductions, bridges, reharmonizations in present day idioms, rhythmic variety, countermelodies, etc. All selections have been scored for a six (or five) part brass ensemble with the following part books available: (preferred instruments are listed before the parenthetical substitution possibilities) Part 1: C Instruments (Violin, Oboe, Flute); 1st Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet) Part 2: 2nd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet) Part 3: 3rd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet); F Horn (English Horn); Eb Horn (Alto Saxophone, Eb Alto Clarinet) Part 4: Baritone treble clef (Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet); Trombone (Baritone bass clef, Bassoon, Cello) Part 5: Baritone bass clef (Trombone, Bassoon, Cello) Part 6: Tuba or Sousaphone (Bassoon or Cello with occasional lower range limits, String Bass 8vb) While hoping to keep the selections interesting and worthwhile for experienced players, they have generally been restricted to a medium level of difficulty (or Grade III as defined by the Instrumentalist Magazine). Extremes of range and key signature have been avoided, lead parts have ample time to rest and catch their breath and technical demands are usually modest. Selections which could have been expanded to larger proportions (such as A Mighty Fortress) have been held to a modest length, in order to give younger musicians a better chance to play them successfully. Footnotes in the conductor's score indicate how the longer medleys can be abbreviated, if that is desirable. WESLEY HANSON
