Composed between 1887 and 1890, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem is not only one of his best-known works but one of the most popular piece of choral music in the Classical repertoire, coming 23rd in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame 2024. Believed to be a tribute to his father (who died in 1885), Fauré himself said “My Requiem wasn't written for anything – for pleasure, if I may call it that!” It started life as a five-movement work but was later expanded to be the final seven-movement work we know today. The first version (which Fauré called “un petit Requiem”) was first performed on 16 January 1888, with Fauré conducting, a second version premiered on 21 January 1893 before the final version (reworked for full orchestra) was played on 12 July 1900; the Requiem was performed at the composer’s own funeral in 1924.The Libera Me, or Deliver Me, was actually written in 1877 and is the sixth part of the Requiem.Fauré once said of the work, “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest. Upon interview, he also said, “It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. The music of Gounod has been criticised for its inclination towards human tenderness. But his nature predisposed him to feel this way: religious emotion took this form inside him. Is it not necessary to accept the artist's nature? As to my Requiem, perhaps I have also instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ! I know it all by heart. I wanted to write something different.”This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. English.The SATB version of Moonlight Sound Design was commissioned and premiered by the youth choir KamÄ“r conducted by MÄris Sirmais in Riga, Latvia in 2012. In the USA, it was performed by the Wartburg Choir conducted by Lee Nelson at the 2017 National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Moonlight Sound Design is dedicated to my father who died by way of an accident. The title of the piece is inspired by the fact that the studio I have is in my father’s country house in an attic room, and the night moon shines directly into it.Moonlight Sound Design is here arranged for 3 or 4 Soprano Soli, SSAA Chorus and piano accompaniment. It can also be accompanied by Hang* (available as a free download, and adaptable to other instruments such as Guitar or Vibraphone). The piece should not sound sad, but rather ethereal. It is more about longing than sadness. To create a more ethereal mood, the soloists may be staggered throughout the audience, if possible. This will also provide more dimension to the sound. The Alto section should sing the pitches in bars 5–23 and bars 38–56 with a “didgeridoo†effect.*The Hang (pronunced haÅ‹ in German) is a musical instrument created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in Bern, Switzerland. Its name comes from the Bernese-German word for “hand.†The instrument is constructed from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheets glued together at the rim, leaving the inside hollow, and creating a distinct “UFO†shape. The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mindâ€, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durhamâ€, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending. Concert Note:The Five Poems of Melissanthi, in the English translation of Diana Maynard, comprise a complete vocal cycle of five poems set to music as a posthumous tribute by the composer to the Athenian poet Melissanthi (1910-1991), in the manner of the old tombeaux of the Baroque era, a tradition also used by many composers of the first half of the 20th century. This composer confirms, with reference to his own experience of Melissanthi's poetry these five from among her many poems have made a such a great impact on my composing that I felt the need to dedicate these musical pages to her.The evocative poetic expressions of Melissanthi, whose real name was Eve Chougia-Skandalaki, and the mysterious atmospheres invoked by David Solomons' music introduce the listener to an ethereal and metaphysical dimension, allowing us a glimpse into the unknown and the intangible. A recurring theme, which unites the five lyrics by an invisible thread, is an incessant fluctuation between the real and the unreal, between the known and the unknown and between reality and unreality. The inevitable abandonment of the mind to the seductive charms of the surreal creates an extraordinary parallelism with lines from a great poet of the past…così tra questa/immensità s'annega il pensier mio:/e il naufragar m'è dolcein questo mare[…so in this/immensity my thoughts drown:/ and to be shipwrecked is sweetfor me in this sea.](Giacomo Leopardi, L'Infinito, 1819).Both the performance and the enjoyment of the Five Poems therefore require particular emotional involvement, in an overall picture where every single note is a tiny but essential constituent of a larger and more complex musical architecture.
