Published by Martin Lachance (A0.1009919). This composition was commissioned by the Ensemble de Bilitis, a Montreal based music ensemble consisting of a mezzo-soprano, a flute, and a piano. I asked my cousin, the visual artist and poet Patrick Michael Lachance, if he would write a poem for the occasion. His words inspire me, and I had already composed a work on one of his texts (see Sang d’encre). When he wrote the text, Patrick Michaël decided to step into the shoes of one who has lost his great love. The term Les heures bleues (or blue hours) refers to the wee hours of the morning when the sun begins to appear on the horizon. After many sleepless nights waiting for this lost love, despair quietly settles in. The piece is in four sections, each section corresponding to a stanza of the text. Each section begins with two ascending fifths in the piano, symbolizing the dawning of the morning.

The original suite, Mortals, Gods, and Heroes, consisted of three short tone poems depicting three tales from Greek mythology. The Passage of Orpheus depicts Orpheus’s trip to the underworld to bring back his wife, Eurydice. The music is composed as set of variations that intertwines Orpheus’s theme with each of the characters he meets along the way: Charon the ferryman, Cerberus the three-headed dog, Sisyphus forever rolling a boulder up a hill, Persephone the queen of the underworld, and finally, his beloved Eurydice. Tragically, he fails to bring her back. This version was arranged for my wife and the love of my life, Karen-for whom I would gladly march into hell.

Woodwind, brass and percussion represent Apollo, the god-sent Master of the Muses who has handed over to Orpheus the Power of Music. The (opposite) sound world of Orpheus is made of stringed instruments: the guitar, reaching back into classical history, contains the basic intervals of Orpheus' music in this context, harp and harpischord represent further technical and harmonic developments of the literature for plucked instruments, consequently their music shows more developed aspects, more elaborate variations, of the basic material. The (opposite) sound world of Orpheus is made of stringed instruments: the guitar, reaching back into classical history, contains the basic intervals of Orpheus' music in this context, harp and harpischord represent further technical and harmonic developments of the literature for plucked instruments, consequently their music shows more developed aspects, more elaborate variations, of the basic material. The film's soundtrack also included songs by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, as well as the composition by Bonfá Samba de Orfeu. Manhã de Carnaval appears in the film, including versions sung or hummed by both the principal characters (Orfeu and Euridice), as well as an instrumental version, so that the song has been described as the main musical theme of the film. In the portion of the film in which the song is sung by the character Orfeu, portrayed by Breno Mello, the song was dubbed by Agostinho dos Santos. The song was initially rejected for inclusion in the film by Camus, but Bonfá was able to convince the director that the music for Manhã de Carnaval was superior to the song.
