Our final was to play each other pieces with our knowledge we gained throughout the semester. As a composer, I wanted to consider the fact that everyone was going to be sightreading, so I wanted it to be as accessible as possible. This is an easy piece you give to a new group of middle school percussion students. The 2 students on the marimba share melodic ideas, and keep the tempo steady. The bells and vibraphone have a cute conversation throughout the piece, and it wraps up nicely with a ritardando, showing that the sun has finally set. I was inspired by watching the sunset as I drove through the mountains on my way back to Alamosa from Denver. The sky was a beautiful mix of purple, orange, and pink, while the sky was dark enough to make the trees look black against the bright white snow. Colorado is so gorgeous.

The decision was made to not notate the final chorus as sung however when performed/sung the final chorus could be ad-libbed to emulate the original should the performer desire.-Guitar Strumming- There is a suggested strumming pattern/rhythm contained within the intro. This will fit with the song but feel free to come up with your own! This is to be an aid for learners and a resource for teachers. -Structure- The sheet music follows the structure of the song as heard in the recording. If the repeats are not obvious each section (Verse/PreChorus/Chorus) is marked by boxed texts for ease of navigation. I have also provided a tab for the riff which persists throughout the piece in the intro section. -Length- One of my main aims in arranging popular titles is to make the effort to try and minimise the amount of pages required. As a Musician I hate having pages and pages of music that could have been condensed using repeats and other structure markings. This arrangement fully utilises these and this is part of the reason why the decision was made note to notate the final chorus as sung in the recording. As this is a lead sheet it hold all the info to play this song in two pages. -Alternatives- If you need more info in your music I have two other arrangements of this. Both are Voice, Piano, and Guitar Arrangements, the first with the melody above a simple piano accompaniment with the Guitar chords the second is a piano reduction of this arrangement with alterations so that it is playable on the piano. Test Drive is from the soundtrack to the 2010 computer-animated action fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. It follows the story of Hiccup and Toothless as they form an unlikely friendship, against the backdrop of the Viking village of Berk, where the other villagers attempt to kill dragons when they attack.The music is composed by John Powell. Whilst this was his sixth collaboration with DreamWorks Animation, it was the first where he was the sole composer (having worked with other composers such as Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer prior to this). In an interview with The Wasp, Powell said that the directors wanted “size and depth and emotionâ€, wanting “a feeling of the Nordic musical past.†This led him to the music of Nielsen, Grieg and, in particular, Sibelius. “Sibelius was the key. I studied a lot of Sibelius as a kid, and I've always adored his music.†He continues, “we looked at all the folk music from the Nordic areas. And I'm part Scottish and grew up with a lot of Scottish folk music, so that came into it a lot. And Celtic music was something that Jeffrey [Katzenberg] felt had this very attractive quality to it, and a sweetness, that he thought would be wonderful for the film.Test Drive appears in the film when Hiccup first takes flight on Toothless. It perfectly brings together “Hiccup's Theme†and “Toothless' Themeâ€. The two themes take over from each other, representing the development of their onscreen relationship during this flight scene as Hiccup starts to trust Toothless, and vice versa. The soundtrack was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass.
