A visual stereogram represents a 3-D image while looking though a pair of 2-D images. There are special viewers that are used to give this effect where two images viewed through the special device can give a 3-D or stereographic effect. Brubeck's Stereograms for Bass Clef Instruments are musical versions of the graphic form. Brubeck uses familiar folk melodies to create his Stereograms and adds jazzy twists to many of them. The musical version may contain two or three individual parts within a single melodic line, thus the musical 3-D Stereogram is created. Bach’s unaccompanied works have underlying multiple parts in them and Brubeck has been inspired by the Master to create a similar texture in these works. They are suitable encore pieces or performance pieces, alone or grouped into ad hoc suites. Brubeck’s music requires rhythmic accuracy and multiple tonal colors, and are especially useful as sight reading tools to keep the performer sharp and on his/her toes. This collection presents its user with a series of increasingly difficult rhythms on a single pitch. The rhythmic material in this series is organized into 10 difficulty levels. Each difficulty level contains four exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Write in sticking patterns, dynamics, accents, phrase marks, or other articulations for you or your students to practice. If you’re not happy with the ties I included, feel free to add some of your own. Combine the above exercises in any way that you think will be beneficial to your practice. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for these exerci.

Happy Birthday EdMuss i DennLa CucarachaAt last: Some new repertoire for the historical natural trumpet! This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! This arrangement of Happy Birthday was written in 2011 for Edward H Tarr's 75th birthday concert in Basel (CH). Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM

Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018935). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose.
