Debussy's Arabesques are considered to be one of the earliest expressions of French impressionism. They are a suite of two piano pieces that contain hints of Debussy's developing musical style. Although they did not receive much attention when they were first published, they are now regarded as early impressionist standards. Debussy seems to wander through modes and keys, achieving evocative scenes throughout both pieces. The Arabesques are important in the history of music as they represent a significant development in the impressionist movement.Claude Debussy was a French composer born in 1862 who developed a highly original system of harmony and musical structure that expressed the ideals of the Impressionist and Symbolist painters and writers of his time. He is considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Debussy's compositions, including his orchestral poems and piano music, helped establish the musical language for much of the twentieth century. Critics often credited Debussy with pioneering a genre called impressionism, although Debussy consistently rejected the term. Debussy's best-known musical arabesque is his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (1894).

While most of us no longer live within earshot of bells, many will find a catchy and simple melody still wakes us up in the morning, reminds us to go to that meeting we forgot about, or even just helps us to do day-to-day tasks. As an avid alarm-user myself, I find music assisting me with punctuality just as it has for my ancestors. I wanted to create a piece commemorating this bond between music and time, inspired by both traditional carillon melodies, as well as modern day ringtones. My piece Musical Clock contains movements for both beginners and intermediate players. My perspective of life in the rural midwest of the United States was quite pastoral, peaceful and quiet, but in 2020 I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and suddenly had opportunities as well as challenges I had never experienced before. However, many other new music students I spoke to stated how much smaller the city felt to them than their hometown. It was so interesting to see how the places we were raised impacted our view of how we live and communicate as a human race. It was first composed around 1890, at the age of 28, but was significantly revised just before its publication in 1905.This is an arrangement for wind dectet of the third and most famous movement called Clair de lune in Db major.Its name comes from Verlaine's poem Clair de lune, moonlight in French. It is written in 9/8 compound time, marked andante très expressif, and both the piano and orchestral scores are marked mostly pianissimo. Musically, Debussy's Clair de lune belongs to French Impressionism.It is arranged for a double wind quintet of 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl (in A) 2 hn & 2 bsn.I have included an optional bass line for either double bass, contra bassoon or tuba.Other movements are available, for both dectet, and other instrumental groups.It is based on the A Caplet orchestration, so I have retained as far as possible the solo instrumentation.The tricky arpeggios are carried by the clarinets and bassoons.
