A tribute to the inspirational Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa, Shanghai is Australian slang for a slingshot. This is a term I remember from my childhood in north Queensland where a shanghai made from sticks and rubber was a prized possession for a young boy up to mischief. When pulled back the rubber stretches, and as it snaps back into shape, a stone or other form of ammunition is projected into the distance. This action reminds me of the dynamic and joyful qualities of Yamandu Costa’s performances. Shanghai aims to capture some of the energy, playfulness and musical expression Yamandu brings to everything he plays.Hommage au guitariste brésilien Yamandu Costa, « Shanghai » est un argot australien désignant une fronde. C'est un terme dont je me souviens de mon enfance dans le nord du Queensland, où un « Shanghai » fabriqué à partir de bâtons et de caoutchouc était un bien précieux pour un jeune garçon prêt à faire des bêtises. Lorsqu'il est retiré, le caoutchouc s'étire et, lorsqu'il reprend sa forme, une pierre ou une autre forme de munition est projetée au loin. Cette action me rappelle les qualités dynamiques et joyeuses des performances de Yamandu Costa. Shanghai vise à capturer une partie de l'énergie, du caractère ludique et de l'expression musicale que Yamandu apporte à tout ce qu'il joue.

These symbols are briefly explained in the appendix and can also be seen on most Kalimbas. The classic musical notation and/or the lyrics help to develop the song, so that even those unfamiliar with music notes can learn to play the song with this arrangement. The sound of a Vibraphone was used in the setting so that the sound does not mix with the sound of your own instrument. The melody is backed by a metronome and quietly by an organ. English.The Anglo-Saxon poem The Dream of the Rood was probably written in the 8th Century and is the earliest dream-vision poem in Old English. A fragment of the poem from the section that describes the crucifixion can be found carved on the Ruthwell Cross in Dumfriesshire, and set in stone at a time when Ruthwell was part of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria. In responding to a commission for the Hilliard Ensemble, I was keen to find a dramatic text, but one that would also invite a musical response appropriate to the very nature of this kind of vocal quartet. Writing for the Hilliards together with a mixed instrumental ensemble, and for a generous cathedral acoustic, has had a strong influence on the types of textures and sonorities I have used. The structure of the work is dictated by the form of the poem, but the music could also be seen as consisting of a sequence of motets with both vocal and instrumental interludes. John Casken.

It's A Sin is taken from Pet Shop Boys' second studio album, 'Actually', released in June 1987 as the lead single. It became their second number-one in the UK, spending three weeks at the top. Additionally, the single topped the charts in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, reaching number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100. In the song, Tennant describes some impressions he took from his time at a Catholic high school in Newcastle upon Tyne. He ended up feeling that everything he had done or was going to do was a sin. Directed by Derek Jarman, the It's A Sin video marked the director's first of several collaborations with the band; it extended the lyrical themes of the song by showing Tennant under arrest by an inquisition with Lowe as his jailer and Ron Moody ('Fagin' in the musical, 'Oliver!') in the role of his judge, interspersed with brief clips of personifications of the seven deadly sins. This arrangement for brass band opens with the fanfare used in the orchestral Overture to the Pet Shop Boys' 'Performance' tour, segueing into the song and featuring, in the middle, a half-time feel, riffing off Tennant's own suggestion that It's A Sin, at its heart, is a heavy metal record. Although it’s in 3/4 it’s neither courante nor galliard, waltz nor minuet. It just is. Unusually for me, the chordal accompaniment is written for harpsichord (or any keyboard instrument), in order to get the full arpeggiation not possible on my octave mandola or bouzouki.The Western Heights, in Dover, used to be a really fun place to go; a barracks inter alia for a French invasion that never quite happened. Miles of tunnels built into a mountainside with rotten drawbridges, very steep stone staircases and plenty of rats. I used to climb inside and spend hours wandering around in the dark stumbling over debris, squeezing through narrow gaps, climbing walls. It’s been taken over now by various doers of good and made ‘safe’. I think you have to pay to get in. Back in the day one could be Indiana Jones for a while and have a truly great time.

The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mindâ€, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durhamâ€, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending.
