Published by Keir C Crawley (A0.972028). ‘Blueshift’ is the continuation of a number of ideas and experiences, the first of which is the need to compose exciting and challenging music for the classroom. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or 3 budding musician into the musical world of film scores and minimalism albeit minimalism with a small ‘m’. Combining moto perpetuo with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. As such ‘Blueshift’ should be playable by students from Year 4 or 5 upwards, either in its entirety as written live or to a backing track. The title comes from the idea that as light (in this case the light of the Andromeda Galaxy) approaches a fixed point it shifts towards the blue end of the spectrum. For the purposes of both story telling and a cross-curricular link to science ‘Blueshift’ charts the journey of the Andromeda Galaxy (represented by the ever present 5-8 ostinato) towards our own Milky Way Galaxy and what happens on route.

But having just one guitar means that the inner voice sometimes runs out of steam, and the bass voice jumps around from one octave to another. It always left me feeling there was a bit more music to be had amongst the notes.My arrangement, for 4 intermediate players (some of the parts are a little easier) is in a different key entirely. Spreading the workload allows a little more action to go on under the tune.Guitar 4 is 6=D, and it’s also supplied in bass clef (for a normally tuned contra guitar or similar). Either or both lines can be played.Although this can be played in swing (shuffle) rhythm, a straight rhythm allows a more relaxed and romantic feel to the piece, but feel free to try either...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Many listeners will be unfamiliar with the almost recitative-style opening that follows the four-measure intro. So when the well-known tune is finally heard at measure 23, some at least will be pleasantly surprised. But don’t decorate the melody too much here; just enjoy it as it is, let that warm trombone sound shine through! The 2nd trombone can decorate the melody a little more from measure 31 onward, but don’t let any swing feeling creep in before measure 38. You may wish to speed up a bit more than I have indicated at measures 47 and 62, but don’t play the swing sections too fast – this is not an up-tempo version. Just strengthen the swing feeling a little each time. This piece will test your quartet’s ability to play an easy swing really tight – especially when the melody is being pulled around, the lead player is playing a little behind the beat. As is usual with my arrangements, every player has the lead at some point, and maybe the chance to introduce a few of their own ideas. This arrangement gives you plenty of opportunity to exploit those all-important trombone characteristics: slide vibrato, bends, and smears, but above all, a warm sound!Listen to a full-length licensed recording on SoundCloud:

This is an instrumental solo arrangement of Something There created by Brad Powell for his performances in Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventure at the Disneyland Resort's Grand Californian hotel (Napa Rose restaurant), from 2019 to early 2024. It's an intermediate solo guitar arrangement, mixing jazz and classical techniques and chord voicings. You can hear the full arrangement performed in the YouTube link provided. NOTE: This instrumental arrangement is in standard notation with TAB (LYRICS are included for reference). It is also available as standard notation (without TAB).ABOUT: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Dr. Vergara accidentally calls Jean Mrs. Bierbaum. Jean sings about her fiance, who died in WWII. She has never married. Sylvia and Harriet also sing about their experiences during WWII. Another resident, Jerry Rosenberg, whose wife is dying, enters and sings a song about his longing to see Poland again. His wife's illness prevents him from traveling. Jerry sympathizes with Jean's situation--he too is in love with someone who is unreachable. They sing a duet together. Jean begins to develop an interest in Jerry.
