SCORE AND SET OF PARTS TO ACCOMPANY THE WOMEN'S CHORAL ARRANGEMENTA Donna Summer hit from post-disco / new wave era (1983), She Works Hard for the Money is more than a fun pop piece. The song tells a story of a hard-working blue-collar woman, based on inspiration Summer found after the 25th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony (23 Feb 1983) when she attended an after-party. She encountered a restroom attendant named Onetta Johnson (whose name is mentioned in the song) whom she found sound asleep - despite a blaring TV - exhausted from working long hours.Summer related the story in an interview: I looked at her and my heart just filled up with compassion for this lady, and I thought to myself: God, she works hard for the money, cooped up in this stinky little room all night. Then I thought about it, and I said, She works hard for the money... She works hard for the money...This is it! This is it! I know this is it! The arrangement opens with an a cappella introduction in full harmony. The melody moves between the altos and sopranos, with each part otherwise providing rhythmic support (echoing the instrumental accompaniment). The sopranos divide into 3 parts occasionally, allowing some high voices (A-flat) to shine. There are no solos in this arrangement - your women all have opportunity to sing this powerful, true story that serves more broadly as an allegory for women's rights and socioeconomic hardship. One Last Bar Then Joe Can Sing (1994) was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the percussion quintet Nexus, and is a reflection on aspects of percussion history, both personal and musical. The members of Nexus are my friends (I played in the Steve Reich Ensemble along with Russ Hartenberger in 1972, the year after Nexus was formed). The piece aimed to demonstrate how a fine percussion ensmeble can be as musically expressive and subtle as, say, a string quartet. The piece starts from the last bar at the end of the second act of my opera Medea, a very short coda for a quintet of untuned percussion instruments during which the curtain falls. In this piece, however, this one apparently innocuous measure is progressively fragmented until it is taken over, little by little, by the addition of tuned percussion instruments. Eventually two metallophones (crotales and songbells) play aria-like material with bows, occasionally joined by the xylophone, and accompanied by marimba and xylophone ostinati. The piece ends with a coda in which phrases are passed from bowed vibraphone to bowed crotales, then to bowed songbells, supported by tremolos on the marimbas. The rare 3-octave songbells that Nexus owns is one of the American instrument maker J. C. Deagan's particularly fine instruments. The piece is effectively a kind of homage to Deagan, the Stradivarius of the tuned percussion world, who collaborated closely with Percy Grainger in the development of tuned percussion music between the wars. The allusions in the title are obvious: the one last bar is the last measure of music from my opera; the song is that of Deagan's songbells. In the case of Joe I wanted to link my father, Joe Bryars (who was a good amateur baritone singer) with Joseph Deagan and his songbells. However, some time after I had written the piece, Nexus's Bob Becker took me to one side and told me (gently) that the initial J in Deagan's name, in fact, stood for JohnGavin BryarsPercussion 1: Crotales (with bow), Chocolo, Mark Tree; Percussion 2I: Song Bells (with bow), Chinese Cymbal, 3 Wood Blocks; Percussion 3: 2 Cymbals, 2 Triangles, Xylophone, Marimba (shared with Marimba II), Vibraphone (with bow); Percussion 4: 2 Cymbals, 2 Gongs, Marimba I (with low F), Maracas; Percussion 5: 2 low Tom-Toms, Marimba II (to low A).

The music, in both of these works, has a lot of 'dialogue' between the trombone and piano, I really did think of them as communicating - only without using words.

We are always looking for places to go together, as well as excuses to include each other in our own individual travels. One of my personal favorite travel opportunities is the International Double Reed Society conference. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends, make new friends and contacts, and make beautiful music. A number of years ago, I started the All Star Double Reed Band that has now premiered over a dozen new pieces for large double reed ensemble, and has recorded an album of those works. As a combined labor of love, I wrote Impressions of Yellowstone for my wife, a concert pianist, to perform with this group.The first movement, “Little Grand Canyon opens with a chorale in the piano illustrating the simple majesty of the great and wondrous park that my wife and I visit annually with her parents. From there, the music exemplifies my impression of this wondrous landscape; beautiful, powerful. A deep valley with a waterfall on one end, it is one of the more beautiful sites to see in Yellowstone.The second movement, Grand Prismatic, is a musical impression of the different perspectives of this very famous Yellowstone landmark. From the overlook, you see a stunning pond with steam emanating from it and surrounded by color. However, if you are to go down and stand next to the hotspot, your perspective changes greatly. Sulfur smells, danger from the soft crust (with boiling sulfuric liquid just below the surface), and a hot, steamy fog of mist permeate the area.In the finale, Old Faithful, tone painting is brought out in full force as the opening piano solo material brings about the image of the geyser bubbling and building below the surface. Then, at the point of explosion, you hear the water falling and the delight of all of the dozens of onlookers who visit this most famous site at Yellowstone every day.The original version, for double reeds, is dedicated the All Star Double Reed Band and my wife, Tammy Miller, who recorded it on the Co-Op Press label.The version for piano and string orchestra is dedicated to Tammy and the National Composers Orchestra who recorded it on the Baldwin Records label.

Released on 26 May 1967, it spent 27 weeks at number one on the Record Retailer chart in the United Kingdom and 15 weeks at number one on the Billboard Top LPs chart in the United States. It was lauded by critics for its innovations in songwriting, production and graphic design, for bridging a cultural divide between popular music and high art, and for reflecting the interests of contemporary youth and the counterculture. Its release was a defining moment in 1960s pop culture, heralding the Summer of Love, while the album's reception achieved full cultural legitimisation for pop music and recognition for the medium as a genuine art form. This is my arrangement of the opening number.for standard brass quartet: 2 tpts, tbn and tuba. Alt horn in F part for tbn. I have transposed from the original key of G to Eb to aid the brass players.. I have created a new ending for those brass quartets who wish to play the piece on it;s own, but also included the oruginal fade away ending which seques into the next track...with a little help.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1351942). “I’ll Walk Alone†is a World War II era ballad whose poignant melody sounds as though it could have been written just yesterday.  First introduced in the 1944 movie Follow the Boys, it was hugely popular and has since been recorded by numerous artists.   Universal Pictures produced Follow the Boys in an effort to help boost morale for both overseas military and folks on the home front.  Despite being filled with stars and songs, critics tended to dismiss it as hokey and trite.  The exception was a scene in which Dinah Shore sang “I’ll Walk Alone.† Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, Ms. Shore’s follow-up Victor recording spent 20 weeks on the top ten Best Selling Records chart.  The song was used yet again in 1952 for another motion picture, With a Song in My Heart, the Jane Froman biographical film, and the melody eventually developed as a standard, particularly in the world of jazz.   Sammy Cahn’s lyrics for this song express the feelings and the promise of a woman who has been separated from her lover by the war.  She pledges that she will be true, that she will wait for him, and that “'till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone.† Jule Styne’s melody is both plaintiff and simple. an eight-measure phrase, a repeat of the phrase, an eight-measure second phrase, then another repeat of the first phrase.   For this arrangement, the suggested tempo is a relatively slow, blues-like 72 bpm.  It features a tenor saxophone as lead and solo instrument accompanied by brass quintet.  A four-measure introduction opens the piece with Trumpet 1 playing melody and the other four brass providing background.  Following the intro, Tenor Sax plays its first three notes alone; the other instruments begin their accompaniment on measure 6.  Trumpet 1 is tacit during measures 6-11 but begins adding counterpoint in measure 12.     In performing this arrangement, brass instruments should ensure that, when the Sax plays, their volume as a group is under (i.e., softer than) the melody.  The exception begins at measure 36, when a crescendo leads to the quintet playing fortissimo.  During this section, the Tenor Sax plays a couple of responses.  At measures 43 a decrescendo lowers the brass volume back to its original soft accompaniment level.  The piece ends with brass recapping the introduction and Sax providing a final statement.   This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 57 measures, a little over three minutes in length.  Written in the key of G major, Tuba’s lowest note is a G below the staff.  Other than that, all notes are well within the normal playing range of each instrument.   The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.
