They kept everyone in line and communicated orders from military leadership. Most were very young and many accounts speak to their shortness as an assett on the battle field (bullets fired tended to go higher). This piece is also part of a longer collection of works connection the final year of Abraham Lincoln’s life (and a call to one of his children by using the name Tad - not that Tad was a drummer during the war).Movement 1, Campfire Tales with the Men, sets up an imiganary tale of the drummer entertaining soldiers hanging around a campfire. Movement 2, They Shot the Fife Player (RIP Fancy Billy), reflects on the realities of war and losing friends. Movement 3, 3. Betallion Joy with Salty Sixteenths (the Almost Crazy Army), imagines the interplay between a drummer with the tree line on an open battlefield - with tons of echoes and having the drums interactive with those delayed performances.

Published by David Heywood (A0.910421). On a Slow Boat to China has been a favorite of jazz musicians for over 75 years because of its grooving melody and fantastic chord changes. In that tradition, here is a hard swinging arrangement for four flutes (Three C Flutes and Alto Flute) along with rhythm section. After a dramatic chromatic introduction, the groove is set by a bass ostinato pedal that helps the melody build to the second half. All four flutes have a shot at the melody before opening up for solos for everyone over these great changes. After the solos, there is a stop time flute feature where a written out line is passed back and forth between all the players giving the effect of a group improvisation. It finishes with the same high-energy ostinato pedal. The chart includes written out piano voicings and bass lines, along with an optional guitar part. At a medium advanced level, this chart is well within the reach of most doublers, and is a swinging addition to any program!

Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. McCartney had been staying on Long Island when the category-three storm Hurricane Bob that made landfall had hit in August 1991. This made McCartney sit with an acoustic guitar and write what he describes as a gentle love song that becomes a 1960s protest song. The song was co-produced by George Martin and McCartney, being started, finished, and mixed within a single session on 3 September 1992 in Sussex, England. It is the earliest recording on Flaming Pie.Around the time of the release of the album, McCartney's Wife of nearly 30 years, Linda, was suffering from breast cancer and sadly passed away 7 months later. The music video also portrays this with shots of the two of them together in her last days. Put simply, the song, lyrics, melody are for her and trying to tell the story of how the two of them were destined to love each other forever.

While most of us no longer live within earshot of bells, many will find a catchy and simple melody still wakes us up in the morning, reminds us to go to that meeting we forgot about, or even just helps us to do day-to-day tasks. As an avid alarm-user myself, I find music assisting me with punctuality just as it has for my ancestors. I wanted to create a piece commemorating this bond between music and time, inspired by both traditional carillon melodies, as well as modern day ringtones. My piece Musical Clock contains movements for both beginners and intermediate players. Each movement may be played individually, but any two or more movements should be played sequentially. ~Adam Lenhart, 2024This composition was first premiered by carillonist Adam Lenhart at the 53 bell Charles Baird Carillon in Ann Arbor, Michigan.------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Associations Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Mens Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.
