J'ai Vu Le Loup is an old French song in which the Gregorian chant tune of Dies Irae becomes a lively dance. The lyrics describe seeing the wolf, the fox, and the hare (possibly the King, the Church, and the Landlord) eating, drinking, and dancing. Variations of this song seem to exist from as early as the 13th century and can be found in several European countries as well as in modern Cajun and Quebec French versions. Even modern pop and rap performers have made use of it. This double reed ensemble arrangement begins simply, then builds throughout to a frenzied, syncopated finale. Each part has its own interest. An alternate english horn version of the oboe d'amore part is included.

This version adds 2 piccolo, a flute and a contrabassoon to a double reed choir (2Picc,Fl,3Ob,2EH,4Bn,Cbn). The gibet was a hook (gibbet), usually found near the entrance of a medieval town upon which some law offender would be suspended so as to warn visitors and the inhabitants not to offend. The ostinato throughout serves as a reoccurring focal point, much like the constant swing of the hook in the wind. It's dark, foreboding, and absolutely beautiful. This composition has eight short movements and is scored for wind quintet. I. Nebulous – The wandering tonality, slow tempo, frequent shifts of color, and lack of cadences gives this movement a feeling of vagueness. II. Puckish – This Allegretto movement has a playful quality that is created by staccato articulations, melodic leaps, unexpected use of rests and sudden tonality shifts to express an impish quality. III. Excited – A fast tempo and technical passages along with driving rhythms help this movement express excitement. IV. Horrified – Angular melodic lines, trills, dissonant chords, extreme ranges, and accents are all used to create this emotional representation. V. Jocular – This playful movement in an Allegretto tempo uses staccato, syncopation, meter change, dotted rhythms, and angular melodies for its laughing sounds. VI. Scattered – A Presto tempo with hemiola, staccato notes, and light scoring are used throughout this short movement that feels like it is constantly changing direction. VII. Regretful – This Lento movement has sad legato lines with unresolved dissonances at the beginning and end. The middle section creates a sense of hope but quickly returns to the sorrowful sound. VIII. Confident – This movement is in a march style with strong accents. Its clear lines and rhythms help portray strength in one’s beliefs.

Scott Joplin perfected ragtime music and raised it to a true art form. A man of his time, yet clearly hindered by it, his strenuous life unfolded with joy and sorrow, success and failure. The "Strenuous Life” presents a simple stroll, high-strutting kicks, intricate syncopations, a gentle middle section, and a stirring conclusion. The original piano rag was published in 1902 by John Stark & Son of St. Louis, Missouri. The title may have referred to a famous speech delivered by Teddy Roosevelt in Chicago in 1899. In this version, the composition was arranged for Double Reed Quartet by Harry Walker.

As well as being built from familiar shapes, it sits well on the guitar neck.It's a popular wedding piece, and rightly so.The first verses and chorus feature a low tune, which needs to sing like a cello to cut through the higher notes in the accompaniment. In the repeat, the tune comes up an octave and the accompaniment dips down lower to make a real contrast, and add a real sense of “build” to the piece.Where they work well, I’ve included the little motifs that feature on the piano and strings in the official audio release.I’ve not loaded the piece with dynamics - but please be sure to add dynamics that work for you, so you make this “your performance”.Guitar 4 is tuned to 6=D, and the same part is also supplied in bass clef (without the need to tune down). Either or both parts can be played.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest. The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850. Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates. Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume. I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered. Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure. Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed. I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016. The Poet's Pen I was a useless reed; no cluster hungMy brow with purple grapes; no blossom flungThe coronet of crimson on my stem;No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gemof flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heathAround my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreathRobed me in silver: day and night I pinedOn the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.At length a poet found me. From my sideHe smoothed the pale and withered leaves, and dyedMy lips in Helicon. It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra. I also intended it to be a suitable companion to the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations, also featured on the Jacksonville Symphony's 2014-15 season opener. Keenly aware of Peter's fine soloistic abilities I approached organization of the work around quotations from well known clarinet solos.
