Considered a major contribution to the develop of Czech music, The Bartered Bride by BedÅ™ich Smetana is a comic opera in three acts that premiered, in its final version, in 1870; having not been a great success when the original two-act version premiered at the Provisional Theatre, Prague on 30 May 1866. The opera was part of Smetana’s aim to create a native Czech music after the conductor Johann von Herbeck commented that Czechs were incapable of making music of their own. Whilst he avoided the direct use of folksongs, Smetana did use numerous traditional Bohemian dance forms, such as the furiant and the polka, leading to music that was Czech in spirit.“Sold Brideâ€, a more accurate translation of the original Czech title (Prodaná nevÄ›sta), tells the story of two lovers (MaÅ™enka and Jenik) who want to marry despite MaÅ™enka’s father’s obligations for his daughter to marry the son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. Scheming, condition proposals and secret identities leads to a happy ending.The polka was not in the original 1866 version. A revision in October 1866 saw the addition of a gypsy dance near the start of act 2. But by the next performance in January 1869, this had been replaced by a polka. In June 1869, a new polka replaced the January version’s (as well as being moved to the end of act 1) and this is the one that we know and love today.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Atypical to those classic publications, there are some lively 16th note runs featured in the tuba part during the opening strain (you may want your tuba player to set the tempo for this one). Across the rest of the ensemble, everybody gets a chance to take on the melody along with a number of other active lines and transitions to keep things interesting for players and listeners alike.This composition fits right in with the style of the other traditional Hungry Five pieces. There are no extreme range requirements (other than some lovely chalumeau register clarinet lines and a trombone part that briefly reaches its way up to 3rd ledger line G) and the technical challenges shouldn’t be out of reach for intermediate players so even fairly young ensembles could include this on a German band performance. Ready to go for adding a fine waltz to your Oktoberfest gig!

What are Calisthenics? You’ve all come across them in one form or another….mainly probably in caricatures of Victorian or Edwardian men in boldly striped sportswear lifting heavy weights or Victorian ladies elegantly waving their arms around(see photo) We found the idea of daily exercises in combination with utterly lovely tunes so intriguing that we decided to call our latest publication Calisthenics The music combines training of speed, thumb technique, interpretation. Short: another great fun and educational publication. The word calisthenics is derived from the Greek, kalos, beautiful; and sthenos, strength; the object of calisthenic exercises being to secure physical beauty by developing the limbs and muscles of the human frame, and making the joints flexible, thereby giving strength and power, and ensuring a graceful carriage, erect bearing, and freedom to the figure. In the words of the old Victorians: The highest refinement of that beauty is unattainable without splendour of activity and delicate strength. Exercise is now recognised to be as great a necessity in woman's education as in man's we are learning that many bodily defects and much of her weak health is attributable to the want of it; more especially in youth, when the frame is growing. Such exercises must, however, be carried out under a system; irregularly conducted, they do more harm than good. The Peacock Polka for Circus Band (2 Clarinets, 3 Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Baritone TC or BC, Tuba, and Drums), by Sarah Houle, 2023/2024. What a delightfully happy polka! For all that know and all that have seen, one of our local breweries has a beautiful biergarten, abundant with flowers and large shady trees. It is a lovely place to sit and listen to live music while enjoying their German craft beer. Sometimes, if one is lucky, their peacocks will wander through the landscaping. They are so fun to see, especially when they have chicks in tow. I have decided to write this polka in more typical fashion with a trio section. The trumpets get to play the part of the peacocks, trumpeting out a modified peacock 'meow' call. Eventually, the trumpets do get a chance at the melody. Over all, I am quite pleased with this orchestration of the piece. Originally, I had done this for brass quartet, but this is expanded for the circus band.
