Published by EAMUSIC (A0.1283414). Obelisk is a work that was built as a response to the atrocious events happening in the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a composer who was born in Ukraine, I felt very deeply for the hardships of the people of my country and this work is a direct emotional response to the images I see and stories I hear. The central part of the work features pre-recorded interviews with some of the Ukrainian civilians telling their harrowing stories of loss, struggles, and fight for survival.  When I was a child, my parents made the difficult decision to leave the country due to the beginning of another war Russia’s Putin started in Chechnya and my parents knew - one day he would be coming for Ukraine. As someone who immigrated to Canada at a young age, I experienced all the difficulties associated with finding new life in a new country. I saw the struggles of my parents and now I see the struggles being experienced by people fleeing Ukraine.  Throughout the work you will hear the sonic accompaniment to the pain and suffering that Ukrainians undergo on daily basis, you will hear their voices and see images of the brutality committed against the people of Ukraine. This is a heavy work to experience, but as an artist I feel it is only appropriate to raise awareness around the issue and show the people the horrors going on in the world.    The title of the work was inspired by the famous monument erected in 2001 to mark the occasion of the 10thanniversary of Ukraine’s Independence from the Soviet Union. At that point it appropriately replaced the monument of Vladimir Lenin. Towering on top of Kyiv’s Independence Square (famously known as Maidan) at 200 feet, this obelisk celebrates the nature of the Ukrainian independent spirit and directly reflects my ideas through this musical composition with the hope that the powerful Ukrainian nation will prevail over its enemy once again.  This PDF includes Score and Parts.

Since the synth pop duo recorded this song as a tribute to the King, Elvis is briefly in the building here to croon a false ending before the tempo picks up again for a punchy finish. Paul created this arrangement for Kitsch in Sync, the London-based A Cappella pop choir he founded, and the group would usually swap out the solo tenor in humorous fashion for the slow section - if your 'Elvis' really milks it the audience should start applauding before your 'Neil' jumps back in!

English.The great English author, Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), wrote the poem My Boy Jack during the early years of World War I. The poem quickly came to be identified as Kipling’s lament over the death of his son John, who was killed during the Battle of Loos in France in 1915. However, it is just as likely that the poem is a tribute to all who were lost during The Great War, and to those who mourned them. In this setting, the composer casts the forlorn questioner not as one person--a grieving parent--but rather as a mixed solo quartet, representing everyone. The harmonic language in the poem’s first three stanzas is intended to portray the sorrow and angst that Kipling’s words so effectively convey. In the last stanza, however, the tone of the poem suddenly changes, becoming more positive and resolute: Then hold your head up all the more, this tide, and every tide… To reflect this shift, the setting uses a quasi-English folksong style, one that is more lyrical and direct. Alongside his virtuosity in alternating between the two instruments, I found the contrast in tonal colouring an interesting concept, almost as if a violinist changed to playing the violoncello. The small cornet in E flat possesses a soft and velvety timbre which is closer to the flugelhorn than the better-known trumpet with its more incisive tone. “Sentimental†music requires smooth sounds. This composition is my tribute to Miles Davis and Chet Baker, two idols of my youth. Peter Eötvös, 2017.

INTERMEZZO (Cavalleria Rusticana) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes The opera Cavalleria Rusticana opened on 17 May 1890 in Rome to a half empty house. However, the audience included not only the most authoritative music critics in the country but also Queen Margherita, a great music lover. It was a success from its opening notes. Following Stagno's rendition of the Siciliana behind the curtain the audience leaped to their feet with a thunderous applause not heard for many years. Mascagni took 40 curtain calls.The intermezzo is an orchestra interlude that most people recognise, that far fewer can name, and virtually no-one can identify the composer. My arrangement was inspired by hearing the original orchestral version at the funeral of Bill, a fellow guitarist, and this is my tribute to him - an arrangement for 4 guitars.In order to make the very best of the compass of the guitar, I’ve had to change to pitch a little, but it makes it all the more playable.The tempo is slow - really slow and relaxed. I’ve not added fingering, because although much can be played in low positions, you may well find that there is plenty of time to take much of the piece up the neck, where the guitar really comes alive.I hope you enjoy performing this!

In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music.My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. In honor and tribute to a mother, this is an instrumental guitar solo (with optional lyrics included), as recorded by The Candlelight Guitarist, with music and lyrics composed by Bradley Powell. The piece seemlessly blends country, jazz, folk and classical guitar styles, and the lyrics are heartfelt, warm, loving and positive.It's an intermediate level fingerstyle-classical guitar solo (comparable in difficulty to an easier Sor or Carcassi etude, or Beatle song played as intrumental solo). At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Commissioned for the 7th edition of DROME DE GUJITARE, this piece was created at the theater of the city of Valencia, on October 27, 2023, under my direction by the D.D.G guitar orchestra.It pays tribute to the memory of my friend Roland Dyens.The 1st movement, quite brief (1 minute), emphasizes a motif which metamorphoses into a harmonious accompaniment of the themes of the 2nd movement (5 minutes) LIGHT, this in calm and serenity. This 2nd movement fades at the end to reveal a motif which accelerates to give a burlesque and clumsy dance: DANCE ELEPHANTASQUE (3 minutes) with an obsessive theme which concludes this work.Francis KleynjansCommandée pour la 7ème édition de « DROME DE GUJITARE », cette pièce fut créée au théâtre de la ville de Valence, le 27 octobre 2023, sous ma direction par l’orchestre de guitares D.D.G.Elle rend hommage à la mémoire de mon ami Roland Dyens.Le 1er mouvement, assez bref (1 minute), insiste sur un motif qui se métamorphose en accompagnement harmonieux des thèmes du 2e mouvement (5 minutes) « LUMIERE», cela dans le calme et la sérénité.
