An arrangement for String Orchestra of the national anthem of Finland. There are also versions for Brass Quintet & Symphony Orchestra in my two stores.Maamme (Finnish: [ˈmɑːmːe]) or Vårt land (Finland Swedish: [ˈvoːrt ˈlɑnːd]; both meaning Our Land) is Finland's national anthem. The music was composed by the German immigrant Fredrik Pacius, with (original Swedish) words by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, and with this music it was performed for the first time on 13 May 1848. Originally it was written for the 500th anniversary of Porvoo and for that occasion it was Runeberg himself who wrote the music.The poem has been influenced by the Szózat (Appeal) of Mihály Vörösmarty, both in style and content.[The melody of Maamme is also used for the national anthem of Estonia with a similarly themed text, Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm (My Fatherland, My Happiness and Joy, 1869).It is also considered to be the ethnic anthem for the Livonians as Min izāmō (My Fatherland).The original poem, written in 1846 but not printed until 1848, had 11 stanzas and formed the prologue to the verse cycle The Tales of Ensign Stål (Fänrik Ståhls Sägner), a classic example of Romantic nationalism. The current Finnish language text is usually attributed to the 1889 translation of Ensign Stål by Paavo Cajander, but in fact originates from the 1867 translation by Julius Krohn.The Tales of Ensign Stål were much appreciated throughout all of Scandinavia. Up until the time of Finland's independence in 1917 and 1918, when the song began to be recognized as specifically applying to Finland, Pacius's tune and Runeberg's text were often also sung in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Note that in the original Swedish text there is no reference to Finland (except for in verses 4 and 10, which are rarely sung), only to a country in the north, but the Finnish text explicitly refers to Finland. The poem's theme is, furthermore, remarkably similar to that of the national anthems of Sweden (Du gamla, Du fria) and Norway (Ja, vi elsker dette landet).[citation needed]There is no law regarding an official national anthem in Finland, in the way the coat of arms and flag of Finland are legally defined. Instead its position has been established gradually by convention over the years.Today, Maamme is firmly established by convention. Children learn it in school; in formal occasions it is sung both in Finnish and in Swedish. It is played at sporting events, such as the Olympics. In the 1880s and in the 1920s there were more attempts to replace it with a Finnish language version but these ceased by the 1930s. Some Finns have proposed that the Finnish national anthem be changed to Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, with lyrics by V.A. Koskenniemi (Finnish) and Joel Rundt (Swedish). There are also those who simply prefer Finlandia as a musical piece, although critics claim that it is difficult to sing.[citation needed]It is said that Pacius composed the tune in four days. It was popular throughout the 19th century, but established as national anthem only after Pacius' death.The melody of Maamme has similarities with the German drinking song Papst und Sultan. Many believe that Fredrik Pacius intentionally or unintentionally copied parts of the tune. A constituent nation of the United Kingdom, Scotland lacks an official, legislated national song; in fact there are several songs in use as national songs of Scotland. The one most often considered as the unofficial national anthem (and most often presented as Scotland’s anthem at sporting matches) is Flower of Scotland, written by Roy Williamson in 1965 for the popular folk group The Corries. It was first used in a sporting match in 1974 by the Scottish national rugby team in 1974, sung by the team. When the British God Save the Queen was sung before a rugby match in 1988 to represent Scotland, and was met by derision from the crowd, Flower of Scotland was adopted as Scotland’s pregame anthem. Flower of Scotland, however, has not been adopted in any official basis as the Scottish anthem. Other popular national songs of Scotland have sometimes used as unofficial national anthems, the most common being Scotland the Brave (a traditional melody (sheet music) with lyrics writted by Cliff Hanley in 1950). Scotland the Brave was used as the Scottish anthem at the Commonwealth Games until 2010 (when it was replaced by Flower of Scotland) and is most commonly heard on the bagpipe, the Scottish national instrument. When the Scottish Parliament was opened in 1997, another national song (A Man’s A Man for A’ That by national poet Robert Burns) was used, which isn’t usually presented as a Scottish anthem. The choice of this song may have been to duck the controversy of choosing one of the previously mentioned national songs as an official regional anthem, or by using God Save the Queen (the anthem of the United Kingdom, of which Scotland is a part). It commences with a whizzy Toccata to get the audience in the mood before announcing the Themes. These lead to a set of Variations, which includes one where the player will need a plunger mute along with ad libitum pitch bends and growling to create a somewhat inebriated feel, all leading to the last energetic movement. When entertaining children or in a less formal setting, the composer has often described each variation, such as Pagliacci (Clown), Jumping Bean, Tarantella and Late for Dinner. The lyrics are by Maurice Albert Thiriet; Robert Jacquet and Nicolas Abel François Frionnet wrote the music. It was adopted as Niger's anthem in 1961 and relinquished in 2023.The anthem was written by French film composer Maurice Albert Thiriet. The following year, the country adopted La Nigerienne as its national anthem. In 2019, President Mahamadou Issoufou announced his plans to replace La Nigerienne, following concerns that the lyrics expressed perceived gratitude towards the colonial power. A committee was established to reflect on the current anthem and find a new anthem if necessary. On June 22, 2023, the National Assembly adopted The Honor of the Fatherland as the country's new anthem to replace La Nigerienne.

The melody of Liechtenstein's national anthem is from England, and it’s almost identical to the British anthem except that the chorus is always repeated. The melody has been a national song in some European countries for many years and was used in the Swiss national anthem until 1961. In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Only the first stanza and the refrain (which is sung twice) were approved in President Kuchma's official proclamation.This arrangement for Trombone Quintet, / Choir in the brass friendly key of d minor, is easily accessible to those students who play at the Adv. Arranged for Brass Quartet, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today was first written in Latin titled Surrexit Christus hodie, as a Bohemian hymn in the 14th century by an unknown author on manuscripts written in Munich and Breslau. In Latin, it had eleven verses. It was first translated into English in 1708 by John Baptist Walsh to be included in his Lyra Davidica (Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns). The verses of the hymn were revised in 1749 by John Arnold. Initially the hymn only had three verses translated with just the first verse being a direct translation; in 1740 Charles Wesley (one of the founders of Methodism) added a fourth verse to the hymn as an alternative, which was later adopted into the hymn as part of it. The hymn is also noted for having Alleluia as a refrain after every line.The hymn is set to a piece of music entitled Easter Hymn which was composed in the Lyra Davidica for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. There was a later version of Easter Hymn composed by William Henry Monk which is also used for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. Some denominations of Christianity often just use one while some use both. The hymn is sometimes confused with Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, which was written by Wesley. Don't Get Around Much Anymore quickly became a hit after Bob Russell wrote its lyrics in 1942.Two different recordings of Don't Get Around Much Anymore, one by The Ink Spots and the other by Ellington's own band, reached No. 1 on the R&B chart in the US in 1943. Both were top-ten pop records, along with a version by Glen Gray.
