Bach's Motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Sing unto the Lord a new song) BWV 225 was first performed in 1727 and the text is based on Psalms 149 and 150. It is written for eight voices of two four-part choirs. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work of three movements is about 13 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. Mr Sauer suggests, Since a complete performance of this Motet is about thirteen minutes in length, any of the three movements may be performed separately. The top voices in each choir have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

A double reed choir transcription of the famous New World Symphony second movement. Despite being full of famous solos for English Horn and oboe, playing the quiet, sustained string parts in the key of Db major/C# minor without sticking out is an enormous challenge. Despite the seeming simplicity of the parts, this is definitely one of the most challenges I've had in making a multi-track recording. It's arranged with an advanced college/professional group in mind, and all parts will need great amounts of control in order to play this musically. All oboe and bassoon parts are divisi.

An advanced-level jazz arrangement of Autumn in New York for unaccompanied 7-String Electric Violin. Although this was written on a 7-string, it also translates very well on a 6-string; there are only 2 passages that require the low Bb string, and these will sound fine taken up an octave. If you want to try this on a standard violin, well... good luck with the 5-note chords!I realize we extended-range violinists are few & far between, but if you (like me) appreciate the unique ability of this instrument to cover bass substitutions, chord melodies, and other roles that were previously thought exclusive to fretted/keyed instruments, this arrangement is an excellent demonstration of some of the really cool ways that you can bring a melody to life without the need for any effects or accompaniment. The work takes a fragment from a theme by Bela Bartok, from his 1911 one-act opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle, and is a set of free variations, like a fantasy, upon this theme, within a vague ternary structure. The whole ensemble is often treated quite percussively, exploring angular snap rhythms, as well as inversions and symmetry of pitch. One percussionist plays marimba, while the other plays snare drum. The piece takes Bartok's motif as a starting point, before developing beyond this idiom. The work remains accessible to audiences, and can be played by more advanced performers. When Cuarteto Casals approached me with the idea of illuminating Beethoven´s quartets anew, you can imagine the many thoughts and feelings that where going through my mind: what a joy, what a great honor… What an intriguing head-scratcher! How can you possibly shine a new light on something that is already perfect? Weeks, months went by in search of a common ground between the Master and myself until I finally found it in the realization that a word lays “hidden†in the St. John’s hymn that gave musical notes their original name: ‘Re, Sol, Ut, Io’ (D, G, C, B in English music notation) Perfect! “Resolutio†in Latin means both the resolution of a problem and the re-solution: a re-blend of many elements that will eventually coagulate to make something new. There was finally the melodic and a rhythmical canvas for my piece. On this canvas I wrote the story of a funny little contest, played on a sunny Mediterranean square, between street musicians and Cuarteto Casals just minutes before they are about to go on stage to perform Beethoven´s “Harp Quartetâ€. After all the characters, each in his own way, had the chance to tell their story, a gentle rain starts to fall, dissolving (Re-solving) again the music sheet to eventually leave us with just a white piece of paper for somebody else to continue the Work. ABOUT the composer: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs.
