In the words of Justin Hayward, (Performing Songwriter Magazine; issue(vol.)13, “Nights in White Satin was about a very romantic set of white satin sheets, about Love, about the end of one big affair and the beginning of another. It was about real things that were happening in my life.†“It sort of had that double meaning, which was intentional, sort of medieval knights as well..†Justin Hayward (Performing Songwriter magazine: issue (vol.)13. This is a flute choir ensemble arrangement of the interpretation of a romantic set of white satin sheets, that has a strong thread of Love weaved in and out throughout the piece if you listen with extra care, wrapped up carefully in unrequited Love. Additional note: In the original album where Nights in White Satin first debuted is a concluding poem written by the group’s drummer Graeme Edge. The poem was called “Late Lament†which gave Nights in White Satin it’s carefully written ornamental completion. The original album was called Days of Future Passed, and the beginning lines of the poem Late Lament goes like this…â€Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room,..please enjoy performing this flute choir ensemble arrangement of Nights in White Satin, it was arranged with Love.

This arrangement was commissioned for a particular group which explains the slightly unusual instrumentation of 4 Violins, 1 Flute, 1 Clarinet, 1 Trumpet, and 1 Trombone. Also by request, it is in the Key of Eb for High Voice.The voice part is unchanged from the traditional versions and by common custom just uses verses 1 and 3. The instrument parts are closely based on the original accompaniment but creatively express the arc of the text. It can go from violin duet to full ensemble and everything in between depending on the mood of the current lyric. Tremelos and trills are added when drama and tension are needed, sweeping runs for climaxes, spiccato technique for he shall break the chains, and so forth. As is my trademark, there is rhythmic interplay between instruments and subtle polyrhythms.Written as an accessible piece for an Intermediate group. A perfect addition to any Christmas program because O Holy Night is a 'must have' tradition and this dramatic and expressive version will please any crowd.(21 page conductor score; parts, 1-3 pages each; 41 pages total)A temporary MIDI recording to give you a general idea of the score. A live performance would be far more expressive.

However, the most brilliant and splendid sections in the piece are a result of their timbres combined and the way their melodic lines intertwine. The piano part is crucial for setting the mood of each section and should be treated with ultimate delicacy and importance. There is no main instrument in this piece. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q7002). My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds. As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments. As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion. Although it borrows its short melodic and rhythmic motif from Debussy’s still and calm work, its mood is diametrically opposed – in truth, an appropriate title for this movement might well be blood in the snow! After the texture unwinds, shatters, and disintegrates, the three instruments feel their way in the dark and gradually attempt to piece things back together. Nevertheless, the piano concludes with a muffled, resigned version of its introductory gesture, suggesting that nothing has been resolved. The second movement oscillates between contemplative and playful moods. This ambivalence is present from the start, when the searching violin solo of the opening is punctuated by playful bird-like comments from the piano. The clarinet ushers in a faster middle section during which the three instruments have a dialogue and both the bird idea and the violin’s rising
