Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in Bb lead-sheet format here, for tenor sax or other Bb instruments.) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track featured Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. The 15 Two-Part Inventions BWV 772-786, arranged for Alto & Baritone Sax. The historical context of Bach's 15 Two-Part Inventions is rooted in their didactic purpose and significance in developing keyboard technique and musical expression. Composed around 1720, these pieces were part of Bach's Klavierbüchlein, a collection of 62 short works for keyboard compiled for his nine-year-old son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The Inventions were designed as exercises to teach two-part playing, familiarize students with musical ideas, and provide a taste of composition. They were structured with care, with the first three based on scales, the following three on broken chords, and a combination of both in the final piece, almost resembling a fugue in form. Bach's Inventions are experiments on musical ideas and a new way of combining lines, reflecting his didactic aim and providing a clear path for students to learn to play cleanly in two parts and acquire a strong foretaste of composition. The inventions' musical elements, composition, and piano technique can be effectively learned and expressed through different instruments. Ascent to Fame Dvořák was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he submitted two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to Dvořák in 1874, 1876 and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed Dvořák to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned Dvořák therefore to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, Dvořák's worldwide status was launched. International Status Dvořák visited England upon invitation all in all nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed Dvořák as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio. United States Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, Dvořák composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. At the same time, because of his growing recognition in Europe and his homesickness for his own country, he left to return to Bohemia in 1895.

Rest IRON BALCONIES AND LILIES was written between December 1991 and November 1992. The nine poems of the cycle, originally in Yiddish and by various poets, speak of a woman's life at various stages, from extreme old age to youth, and back to old age. The poetry is magnificent and direct: at turns quiet, passionate, gentle, ferocious, erotic, agonized and violent. In setting these poems, I have particularly sought to capture the many images and metaphors that unite them. For example, the music representing the violent, life-giving blades (scythes) of No. 2 evoke agonized, ritualized grief in No. 3, a ghastly (and comic) celebration of death in No. 5, and ultimately, a wondrous and benign angel of death in No. 9. Over the course of the cycle, the power and singular clarity of childhood memory gives way to the quiet complexity and blurred edge of adult memory. All poems used by permission.

It's a high energy, very exciting, Brazilian-Latin style instrumental from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and flute interact, with the flute (performed by guest flutist Justo Almario) and piano trading sections of the main melody, and then providing dynamic background hooks and counterpoint. (These piano-flute lines are transposed here for Bb instruments. The tune is a great vehicle for musical interplay, jazz improvisation, and high energy rhythm section playing. The API track featured Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums, with guest percussionist Alex Acuña of Weather Report, backing Mark Massey and Justo Almario. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. The whole composition last for approximately nine minuets.The three movements are entitled, Dawning, Courting, and Wedding; each evoking unique images yet the three are connected as a whole. Despite this being a piano trio, the second movement is a love duet between violin and violoncello in which the piano does not participate. Another aberrant characteristic is that the piano, with few exceptions, plays asupportive role for the two string instruments.

Arranged double wind quintet/bass The Slavonic Dances (Czech: Slovanské tance) are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed by AntonÃn Dvořák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Op. 46 and Op. 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Dances were inspired by Johannes Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvořák's publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and full of national character, were well received at the time and today are considered among the composer's most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture. Contrary to what the title might suggest, the dances are not so much inspired by Slavic folk music generally, but specifically by styles and forms from Bohemia. In these pieces, Dvořák never actually quotes folk melodies, but evokes their style and spirit by using traditional rhythmic patterns and structures in keeping with traditional folk dances.This is my arrangement of No 3 Polka from the first set Op.46 In Simrock's original edition of the piano duet, no. 3 was the D major Sousedská and no. 6 the A flat major Polka - an order apparently approved by Dvořák. Their positions were reversed in the orchestral version. The term polka referring to the dance is derived from the Czech word Polka meaning Polish woman (feminine form corresponding to Polák, a Pole). Czech cultural historian ÄŒenÄ›k ZÃbrt also attributes the term to the Czech word půlka (half), referring to both the half-tempo 2 4 and the half-jump step of the dance.[2] The word was widely introduced into the major European languages in the early 1840s.

German.I was in the middle of a recording project featuring Franz Schubert’s complete symphonies and other orchestral works, when I received a request from Anna Lucia Richter asking if I could compose a companion piece for Schubert’s The Shepherd on the Rock. I was inspired by the movingly simple yet profoundly mysterious musical text Schubert had published by Robert Schumann under the title Reliquien [Relics], and a composition in three sections was born which oscillates between recitative-like sections and expansive ariosos. The beginning of Schubert’s enigmatic funeral march Franz Schuberts Begräbnis- Feyer [Franz Schubert’s funeral ceremony] for nine winds, written when Schubert was only 16, wanders like a phantom as a tonal shadow through the score.
