Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP300). 9 x 12 inches.Clarke worked on the Pieces for Two Violins and Piano during 1909, her last year at the Royal College, when Danse Bizarre gained her a scholarship. Clarke mentioned Danse Bizarre in her typescript memoir composed in the 1970s, and also discussed it with me in 1977 while helping me catalogue her compositions, but she said then that it was long lost, and made no mention of any related material. In the year 2000, however, Clarke's great-nephew Daniel Braden found.a box that Clarke had put in the back of a closet decades before and evidently forgotten, which turned out to contain a chaotic assortment of letters, papers, medical records, and music-manuscript sheets. When put in order, the latter yielded the missing inner leaf of an important viola piece and a number of previously unknown or presumed-lost arrangements and compositions, including ''Danse Bizarre and a Prelude, a Nocturne, and the beginning of a Finale for the same instruments, on the same paper, and bearing similar markings in Clarke's hand and in at least one other hand, which may well be Stanford's. The four movements were plainly developed as a suite, although there is nothing to suggest a sequence for the inner movements, and no compelling reason to believe that the Finale ever got beyond the extant eight pages. The manuscript of the Finale is noticeably rougher than those of the other movements, and several pencil-markings, apparently in another hand, suggest that some of its motivic material had not yet jelled. It seems entirely possible that Clarke had only begun this movement when a family crisis forced her to leave the College, and that she never returned to it. In any case, there is not enough of the Finale to make performance feasible, but the other movements stand quite magnificently on their own. They were recorded by Lorraine McAslan, David Juritz, and Ian Jones on Dutton CDLX 7132, released in 2003. The first public performance, by students at the Royal College under Jones's supervision, took place in May 2005 in the College's Concert Hall, where Clarke had last performed nearly a century before.

Yal Rayeh – Algerian Folk A world-famous Algerian folk song was written and sung by the Algerian popular singer Dahmane El Harrachi. The song tells about the suffering of immigrants in estranging homes from marginalization, exclusion, and longing to return to the homeland, and it contains advice for the immigrant to invite him to return to the motherland as migration to foreign homes is not considered a healthy or natural solution for Arab immigrants.

The original work for Concert Band was commissioned by Edward Trovato and his band, The Gleneagle Secondary School Senior Symphonic Band, of Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. The inspiration came from the name of a stretch of highway that pays homage to the fallen soldiers. It was composed to honour heroism of all kinds - to pay tribute to the brave souls who every day unselfishly risk their lives and even pay the ultimate sacrifice. There are two Highways of Heroes in Canada, the first being a portion of the King's Highway in Ontario, commonly referred to as Highway 401 and officially known as The MacDonald-Cartier Freeway. The second is the portion of the Trans-Canada Highway in British Columbia between Surrey and Abbotsford. In 2007, The Government of Canada renamed the freeway in Ontario between Trenton, home of the Canadian Forces Base Trenton, and Toronto, where the Office of the Chief Coroner is located. This was the first stop for the fallen returning from Afghanistan before returning home to their families. Although Canada had a special forces team in Afghanistan in December 2001, the first infantry battalion did not arrive until February 2002. That April saw the first casualty. The funeral processions that followed inspired a spontaneous phenomenon of Canadians lining the 100-mile route, waving flags and rendering salutes to remember their country's soldiers. The second Highway of Heroes was dedicated in 2011 to the memory of British Columbians who paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for their country in Afghanistan and to the families they left behind. This setting for British Style Brass Band was written to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first main body of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan and to remember the 159 service personnel and civilians whose sacrifices cannot be forgotten. The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others. This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness. The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello. (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics) The pdf file contains score and parts. An instrumental version of the the music, entitled Promenade d'hiver (viola, cello and guitar), is also available on this site. One of the movements is now published as 'The Love That We Share' by Musikverlag-Frank. This is a big, bright fanfare suitable for any occasion - not too short, and definitely not too long! I've rewritten it here in 2022 and added some big percussion. It'd make a great opener for any concert, but would equally work for special occasions outdoors.

Greek.Sung texts are in Greek; English, German and French translations are included. A good friend of mine, the poet lacovos Kambanellis, was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War II. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of Mauthausen. In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and gave me the opportunity to set them to music. I did this with much pleasure, firstly, because I liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly, because I myself was detained in Italian and German prisons during the Nazi occupation, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, of events that must never be forgotten. First and foremost, of course, the Mauthausen Cantata is addressed to all those who suffered under Fascism and fought against it. We must keep the Nazi crimes continually in our minds, because that is the only guarantee and the only way to assure that they are not repeated. And we can see every day that the ghost of Fascism is far from being laid. It seldom shows its real face, but Fascist cultures and mentalities exist all over the world. For us, who had to live through this time of horror, the most important task is to protect our children against this peril. (Mikis Theodorakis, 1999).

But, it can easily be restarted for processional use by simply dropping back into the C minor introduction’s bass line. Theconcerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.â€Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeservedattention.The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, andas a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonalconstructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic ideabehind the musical development. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass.The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio.
