The song was not released as a single in the United States, but nevertheless, Benson recorded two video clips in the U.S. the same year, which were displayed on television programs. Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981218). Composer’s Notes In my parents' library there was an assortment of very old books that I used to leaf through while home for holidays. One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest. The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850. Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates. Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume. I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered. Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure. Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed. I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016. The Poet's Pen I was a useless reed; no cluster hungMy brow with purple grapes; no blossom flungThe coronet of crimson on my stem;No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gemof flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heathAround my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreathRobed me in silver: day and night I pinedOn the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.At length a poet found me. From my sideHe smoothed the pale and withered leaves, and dyedMy lips in Helicon. Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889873). There are 3 movements. Sarabande, March, and Fugue, ranging from 3 to 5 minutes in duration. The Sarabande is serious and melodic, the March is cute, and the Fugue is an orchestrated version of my Fugue for Four Winds. You can get some idea of the sound of Sarabande and March by listening to the sound clips of the versions of them in my Seven Easy Melodies for Oboe with Piano Accompaniment, either in SheetMusicPlus or on my website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. The original Fugue for Four Winds may also be heard in these two places. Suitable for chamber orchestra. The Sarabande instruments are 2 each of flute, oboe, clarinet in A, bassoon, and horn, plus strings. In the March a trumpet (which has a nice short solo) and snare drum and triangle are added. In the Fugue, oboe 2 becomes English horn and a second trumpet is added. There are also optional parts in the Fugue for trombone, tuba, which can be covered by the bassoons, and for bells. Year: 2000.

The guitar part goes up the neck, and the position numbers are relative to the Capo (ie one fret higher than if there was no Capo fitted).There are two arrangements here - one in the husky low register of the sax, to suit a less experienced player, and one an octave higher that has a few challenging notes at the top, but sings out in a gloriously powerful way. The bass line is supplied in both treble and bass clefs, and the two parts are identical, so for a large ensemble, you can have one or the other or both in your performance.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Chicago. I have changed the key very slightly so that the deep bass notes fit on the guitar’s bottom strings and the tune is placed comfortably on the neck. There are no page turns in the part score.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. BLUE MOON - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarDerek Hasted writes Over the years, this piece has been arranged in so many styles.I’ve taken my inspiration from Laurindo Almeida’s Solo Guitar arrangement, which has some lovely and interesting chords and a lot of movement in the inner voice. But having just one guitar means that the inner voice sometimes runs out of steam, and the bass voice jumps around from one octave to another. It always left me feeling there was a bit more music to be had amongst the notes.My arrangement, for 4 intermediate players (some of the parts are a little easier) is in a different key entirely. Spreading the workload allows a little more action to go on under the tune.Guitar 4 is 6=D, and it’s also supplied in bass clef (for a normally tuned contra guitar or similar). Either or both lines can be played.Although this can be played in swing (shuffle) rhythm, a straight rhythm allows a more relaxed and romantic feel to the piece, but feel free to try either...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. And well-known to so, so many people.My arrangement for 3 guitars is somewhere between intermediate (for Guitars 1 & 3) and advanced intermediate (Guitar 2), and will also suit a large ensemble.Guitar 1 is the tune, and Guitar 3 provides the countermelodies. Both are 3 pages long, and a bit of sticky tape to the joins will ensure they fit a normal music stand with no page turns.Guitar 2 (the electric guitar part) is 4 pages, but I have placed open strings and then a bar’s rest at the foot of the page to allow plenty of time for page turns. On a classical guitar we can’t bend the top string by a semitone, so my arrangement uses slurs to make a very acceptable alternative (and a couple of bars have yet more alternatives in the score).The full 6 minutes of the original is here, in the same key, using a variety of textures that help to capture the build-up and decay of the original.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. The low register version is ideal for players with limited experience - it stays entirely in the low chalumeau register and doesn’t cross the break at all. The high register version (an octave higher) is mainly in the clarion register, but it does cross the break here and there, and requires a little more skill.The Guitar is tuned down to 6=D and has the 3:3:2 rhythm that gives this piece its real sense of fun. Although the music reaches the fifth position in places, it’s generally in first and second position to give access to a deeper bass-line. Note that the guitar part requires a Capo on fret 1, and the position markings are relative to the Capo.
