Acclaimed pianist and child prodigy, Amy Beach (1867-1944) was one of America's first female composers to have her orchestral compositions published and performed by symphony orchestras in the United States and Europe. The recording is of the entire edition.Her First Symphony Gaelic was premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1896. This Fantasia (or Fantasy) for piano, vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80, was composed in 1808 by a 38 year old Beethoven.The Fantasia was hastily written to serve as the grand finale for a (personal) benefit concert on the 22nd December 1808 which included premiers of his 5th and 6th symphonies, the 4th Piano concerto and the Mass in C. Beethoven took the opportunity to use the forces available to make this comparatively short piece for piano, orchestra, and a choral finale where he, the soloist, could showoff just how good he was.Sadly, this work is seldom performed because who wants to hire a choir for just 2 minutes of music and an orchestra for not that much longer. This quintet version addresses this by allowing a much smaller ensemble to enjoy performing this utterly delightful work. The piano part is basically what Beethoven wrote, however it has been suitably modified in places to allow the piano to fit into the overall ensemble.

I have NOT simply copied the string parts across to the winds, as other have done. Rather, I have arranged the piece as though it had been written for wind ensemblet, so have given the horns repeated notes , in the same way as the slow movement of the slow movement Dvorak's wind serenade., and also used the horns to sustain. Some of the arpeggio figures remain, but in a simplified form.and are shared between clarinets and bassoons.

This is my arrangement of the 4th movement: Finale (Vivace ma non troppo) It is in a traditional rondo form, A–B–A–C–A–B–A. The main melody is pentatonic. The B section is more lyrical, but continues in the spirit of the first theme. The C section is a chorale theme. I have adapted the string music for winds, and included some sustained horn chords. It has a similar feel to the finale of Dvorak’s wind serenade in D minor op.44.

Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern (Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus) is a play by Helmina von Chézy, which is primarily remembered for the incidental music which Franz Schubert composed for it. Music and play premiered in Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 20 December 1823. This is my arrangement for horn quartet of No.4 Geisterchor (Chorus of Spirits), In der Tiefe wohnt das Licht (In the Deep Dwells the Light) in D major (Adagio). This music was used to accompany the brewing of some poison which was to be given to Rosamunde. Originally written for a brass sextet of 3 horns and 3 trombones, and a male chorus, it has echos of Wagner. It suits the brass quartet, in this instance 4 horns. The original is in D, I have transposed it to F to suit he horn's range.
