The same calm, the same purityaux Cheveux de Lin from book one. Nature and innocence demand a spontaneous and laidback approach to those delicate and poetic riffs to match the colour and aroma of fragrant purple shrubs. Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. It is possible that the young composer first went there in 1880 with the baroness Nadejda Von Meck and later in 1904 when he stayed with the uncle of Emma Bardac (neÌe Moyse), his future bride.The pastoral and familiar poetry of a woodland scene where the earth’s pervasive scent mingles with the subdued display of patches in purple.— CortotA peaceful melody on a shepherd's pipe, resonating on the silent moorland. Arrangement by Daniel Kaplan for woodwind quintet of Mozart's Prelude and Fugue No. 5 from his Six Preludes and Fugues for String Trio, K.404a. This is Mozart's arrangement of the 2nd and 3rd movements of Bach's Organ Sonata No. 2 in C minor, BWV 526. Mozart wrote this to play at the Sunday musicales of Baron van Swieten in Vienna, who insisted that all participants play music of Bach or Handel. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has also arranged several other great works for this ensemble. The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.Note that all six preludes and all six fugues from this work are also available as a single purchase on this website. Originally for solo piano, this prelude is the longest of the set and is noted for its repeating Aâ™, which appears throughout the piece and sounds like raindrops to many listeners.After a tranquil opening in Db major, we transition into the C# minor middle section where the music intensifies as we pass from dream to nightmare (this is where we feature the rich low tones of the contrabassoon). The nightmare dispels as suddenly as it arrived, and we return back to peace and harmony once more.I get much joy from writing arrangements of great works that we wind players don't always get to perform. Two Piano Preludes from Book 1 - Nos.VI Des pas sur la neige/XII Minstrels Two preludes from Bk 1 arranged symphonic winds: double wind quintet  with contra bass and opt. trumpet and trombone.No 6 Des pas sur la neige (Footsteps in the Snow)The piece is one of four Debussy preludes in both books whose title origins are unknown. It has been suggested that the inspiration for the title could have stemmed from a painting depicting a snowy landscape. This was an extremely popular backdrop among Impressionist artist like Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley; the latter painted Snow at Louveciennes.No 12 Minstrels This is the final prelude of Book One.  Debussy delivers a surprising and humorous gem that is a tribute to the performing minstrel groups which started to appear in Europe around 1900. The music of the minstrels included many contemporary jazz elements such as ragtime and blues, rhythms which were incorporated into the music of quite a few fascinated European composers. This prelude cleverly captures the frenzy of the quick-change minstrel act and their rhythmic excitement, opening with a banjo-like theme supported by uncharacteristically blatant dominant to tonic pedals in G Major. We also hear a brief sentimental song and a recurrent drum theme before the prelude comes to a satisfying close with a hymn- like plagal cadence.

It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy’s first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content.Arranged double wind quintet.Debussy indicates a meter of 6/4=3/2 on his piano original. His own recording plays all the quarter notes/crotchets in the 6/4 passages at exactly the same length as the half notes/minims in the 3/2 passages.I have done the same in this arrangement.In other words the beat/pulse remains the same throuhout the piece.

This is an unusual duet combination which I hope will be enjoyed as a recital/repertory piece or perhaps as prelude music before a wedding ceremony.
