Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q7002). My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds. As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments. As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion. Wondrous Love is Jeffrey Ouper’s original take on one of his favorite hymn melodies What Wondrous Love is This, which was first published in 1811. The hymn melody comes from an English ballad of 1701 called The Ballad of Captain Kidd. The hymn is perhaps one of the most admired hymns and spiritual songs still in use today in many churches. Its text expresses an awe at the love of God and reminiscing the text of John 3:16. Jeff’s version was originally written as an organ prelude to be used in church, but here he has arranged it for solo Violin accompanied by synthesizer. This arrangement with Violin can be played by any keyboard instrument, whether it is piano, organ, or electronic keyboard. Duration is about 4 minutes.

Abendlied (Evening Song) is from a cycle of 12 piano duets, Op. 85, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of composition for Schumann. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim took the final number, consisting merely of a completely unpianistic one-handed melody with chordal accompaniment for two hands, and arranged it for violin, oboe or flute. The present arrangement expands that list of instruments to include the Soprano Saxophone, in its infancy at the time the piece was composed. An alternate part for Alto Saxophone is also included. The soaring, free melody is reminiscent of Schumann’s Manfred music, written around the same time. This piece is very demanding in terms of breath control and phrasing. It is an excellent choice for a college or university recital programme and is also accessible for an advanced high school player. Duration: 2:30. Contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.

Even though this composition is relatively straight forward in the traditional A, B, A form, the recapitulation of A contains subtle differences in both violin and cello parts. However, it is the central B theme which stands out; it is a duet between the two strings in which the piano has no part.The difficulty level for this composition is advanced amateur to professional. The central section contains a plethora of double stops for the cello and the range is extremely wide for both instruments.

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and AntonÃn Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan KubelÃk played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

Key: A minor.The concert piece Paganini Jazz by Fazıl Say, which was inspired by classical, modern and jazz styles, is reminiscent of the music of such greats as Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Gershwin and Bernstein, and was originally designed as a charming encore work (1988); following the appreciative response of music lovers and, in particular, that of music critics, it was transformed over a perion of time into a more substantial work for piano. Briefly, the piece was rewritten and expanded a number of times between 1988 and 1995. We can evaluate the work as having taken its inspiration from Paganini's renowned 24th Capriccio, transforming it into variations on jazz requiring virtuoso rendition as well as being a creation open to the addition of improvisations and a variety of arrangements. Throughout music history a number of composers have written various works inspired by the 24th Capriccio. We can count among them Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Lutoslavski. In Say's work, however, a different aspect must be noted: the composer is prepared to add various developmental passages and transitional improvisations while interpreting this work in concert. Furthermore, when the work is considered as a short encore piece, it is abbreviated in a manner deemed suitable by Say.

Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889892). This violin, cello, and piano trio is the first piece I've written that doesn't include at least one wind instrument. It starts with a romantic melody played by both violin and cello, followed by a more energetic rhythmic piece reminiscent of eastern European music, followed by a 5/4 passage similar to Turkish music, followed by a rhythmic section representing India, and ending with a melodic in pentatonic scale representing China. The last is the melody in my composition, Theme and Variations for Er Hu (2-string Chinese violin) and Orchestra. The whole journey takes about 6 minutes. An elderly cello-playing friend assured me that the rapidly moving pizzicatos were quite playable. The audio clip is computer playback.

This work is all about memories and reminiscences. It is flexibly scored in 10 parts and is essentially written for 'sinfonietta' instrumentation of one of each main orchestral instrument plus piano (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, 2 violins, viola, and cello), though other instruments can be substituted. The piece uses a harmonic sequence of jazz-like chords (only heard fully in the final passage). This material re-occurs out of sequence throughout the piece with only subtle changes (mainly of context). This helps to establish the 'reminiscence' aspect of the work.
