This volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns contains 85 songs excerpted from the chapter Country Life in a larger collection of 324 Burns songs compiled and researched by Serge Hovey. It includes songs portraying farmers, shepherds, millers, weavers, tinkers, colliers, coopers, shoemakers, tailors, and other country folk reflecting Burns's intense love of the Scottish countryside and the oral tradition and music of its people. Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent his life collecting Scottish songs, using fragments of existing lyrics as the basis for his own poems, and wrote original lyrics for traditional melodies. Burns left for posterity about 270 poems and more than 300 songs which are usually printed without their tunes. Serge Hovey meticulously examined Burns' own sources, letters, and manuscripts to determine the origin of every tune and all the verses as well as Burns' intended match of words and music. He then arranged each song with highly imaginative and beautiful accompaniments geared for pianists with average skills.

German • English • French.Diogenio Bigaglia (approx. 1676-1745) does not only share similar biographical data with Vivaldi (who was two years his junior), but he also came from Venice and was a musician and member of the clergy. After joining the order of St. Benedict in 1694, Bigaglia spent his life in the monastery of S. Giorgio Maggiore and even became the monastery's prior in later years. The major part of his religious works has been lost; but we do know that their performance had not been restricted to Venice alone and there is reason to assume that his secular music met with the same widespread popularity. This new edition now presents yet another of Bigaglia's sonatas which has so far been neglected and is now available in print for the first time. The manuscript source is part of a volume which contains copies of further Soli, one of them being a violin sonata by Vivaldi which had been neglected for quite some time. Bigaglia's sonata is especially suited for soprano recorder but can also be performed by other instruments.

I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal … [Once upon a time …] to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals. He sang the first eight bars of the song at the beginning of each episode of his eponymous television show and named his production company and venue in Branson, Missouri after it. His autobiography is called Moon River and Me. Williams' version was never released as a single, but it charted as an LP track that he recorded for Columbia on a hit album of 1962. Cadence Records' president Archie Bleyer disliked Williams' version, as Bleyer believed it had little or no appeal to teenagers. Forty years later in 2002, a 74-year-old Williams sang the song at the conclusion of the live telecast of the NBC 75th Anniversary Special to a standing ovation. The song's success was responsible for relaunching Mercer's career as a songwriter, which had stalled in the mid-1950s because rock and roll had replaced jazz standards as the popular music of the time. The song's popularity is such that it has been used as a test sample in a study on people's memories of popular songs. Comments about the lyrics have noted that they are particularly reminiscent of Mercer's youth in the Southern United States and his longing to expand his horizons. Robert Wright wrote in The Atlantic Monthly, This is a love sung to wanderlust. Or a romantic song in which the romantic partner is the idea of romance. An inlet near Savannah, Georgia, Johnny Mercer's hometown, was named Moon River in honor of him and this song. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence.
