Hebrew.This arrangement was commissioned jointly by Brad Spencer, Scott Spencer, and the Washington Men's Camerata and first performed by the Camerata on June 13, 2015, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Naomi Shemer wrote this lovely poem honoring the fabled city, Jerusalem. Its history and mystery are evoked in each verse and in the passionate refrain. At the beginning, Jerusalem is seen asleep, alone, guarding the Temple Wall at its center. Then we picture a deserted, conquered city, empty and desolate. In the third verse, the writer reveals herself as the latest and least of all the notable scribes who have invoked the city, those writers of magnificent Psalms, odes and poems. At the end, people have returned to the city, enlivening its streets and neighborhoods, adding new chapters to its story. Naomi Shemer's music, with its mixture of nostalgia, melancholy, and desire, lifts her verses to memorable phrases: one does not want the song to end. In performing the work, follow the given dynamic markings and allow the song to slowly accumulate dramatic tension, saving the climax for the final refrain. -Alice ParkerDuration: 6:30.

In 1996 it was released on CD on the album Bix Beiderbecke 1927–1930.[3] According to Philip R. Evans, Bix Beiderbecke's biographer, in the second chorus of this recording, violinist Joe Venuti can be heard singing Barnacle Bill the Shit-head, either to express his attitude toward the record producer, or typical of his wacky sense of humor. Esten Spurrier, a friend of Beiderbecke's, is quoted by Evans as saying that Beiderbecke told him he could not believe the record would be pressed and had felt that it had been done just for laughs. Beiderbecke cut loose on the tune with what is believed to be one of his finest cornet solos. John Valby (aka Dr. Dirty) also recorded the song.The tune has inspired a Fleischer Studios Betty Boop cartoon and two films, as well as the name of a rock on Mars. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five (then known as The Elks Rendezvous Band) recorded a clean version in 1938.[4] In the first Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Popeye the Sailor (1933), Barnacle Bill was used as the recurring theme for the Bluto character. The song was inspired by a 2018 Christmas holiday trip to St. Lucia by Ezra and his friends.[2] About the lyrical background of the song, Ezra explained, there was a street party going on, with three different sound systems, people cooking in the street. I asked a woman what was going on and she told me it was a funeral – for three people. They were celebrating three lives! I thought: that is not how we do this at home. And it's really beautiful.

In the span of a night before our next rehearsal (inspired by inadvertent procrastination and an explosion of ideas, not to mention an overabundance of coffee), I came up with this fanfare. The name comes from the Rush song Freewill, in which I quoted a line from Geddy Lee's melodic bass playing. It is hidden in plain sight. If you know the song, see if you can find it! The form of the song is a metaphor for life, the greatest test of free will. An ostinato that carries throughout the piece starts with only the first trombones. Eventually, you meet other people and influences that begin shape who you are, which is why the remaining trombones add more musical ideas as the piece continues. The middle section fluctuates between time signatures and tone colors (confusion, emotions) and the ensemble and conductor choose how the tempo ebbs and flows. It is never played the same way twice. Eventually, everything comes together at the end, which is why the ensemble ends, with the original ostinato, together.

JOHN DUNBAR'S THEME (Dances With Wolves) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEPrimarily for Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This theme, from the film 'Dances With Wolves' is widely admired as a charming and powerful melody.It will make a wonderful item for a concert.My arrangement is based on track 4 of the official Soundtrack CD. It’s very slow, and lasts just over three and a half minutes - be sure not to rush this lovely piece and its haunting descant in the final Verse.The key is just a semitone lower than the original, and two guitars are tuned to 6=D to give a rich deep bass that maximises the sustain that guitars can achieve.Guitar 1 plays the part of the high descant in the original.Guitar 2 is the tune, and if you have more than 4 players, there is an optional divisi part (Guitar 2a) that helps reinforce the beautiful melody.Guitar 3 is arpeggio based, to help the sustain and to ease the counting of the beats.Guitar 4 has thick chords which should be rolled (but not strummed) to add to the majesty of the music.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. On an ad hoc basis, choir, jazz piano, and/or snare with brushes can easily be added. Minimum Proficiency/Curricular Assumption - The student has studied the key of F, but the key of Bb may be currently under study. Fingerings that are unique to the key of Bb are provided as listed by instrument below. Positions are indicated for cello and bass 2. Harmony and Enharmonics - This piece provides an excellent opportunity to discuss how the oddly spelled note illustrates its’ function within the chord.
