English.Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London. I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland) Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. © Paul Hillier, 2012.

Russian Sailors' Dancefrom the ballet “The Red Poppyâ€Â  Reinhold Moritsevich Gliere was a prominent Soviet composer who was best known for his compositions that were inspired by folk music of Russia and its republics.  Prokofiev and Khachaturian were his students.  Originally written for orchestra, Russian Sailors Dance is from Gliere’s ballet “The Red Poppyâ€. This arrangement of Russian Sailors Dance is scored for piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute, bass flute and optional contrabass flute playing the bass flute part.  If only five players are available, the alto flute part may be omitted and alto flute cues should be played.  Suggested tempos are marked at each tempo change.  Please note that there is no tempo change at letter I, only a change of mood. Cheer Up, Pull Away: A Duet for Oboe and Bb Clarinet is inspired by the travels of Thomas Forrest (1729-1802). Forrest was a captain in the British Royal Navy and a captain for the British East India Company. During his travels to Indonesia, he recorded his adventures in a journal. The Maluku islands are a province in Indonesia, west of New Guinea. The islands were known for their production of nutmeg and cloves. During Forrest's time in the Maluku islands, he came across a local fishing vessel. There, he noticed that when the sailors on the ship became fatigued, the first-mate would begin a call of motivation to the men at the oars. The men would respond back with a melody, which lighted their drowsy spirits enough to continue rowing for the whole night. Forrest recorded one of these locals songs. Translated into English, the chants contain, What fishes abound in its main; Behold you island afar; Haste, Haste and the fishes obtain. In 1818, Thomas Van Dyke Wiesenthal of the United States Navy composed a chorus and piano arrangement based on Forrest's journals; Cheer up! Pull away! The song featured calls and responses as similar to the sea chanties from the Maluku sailors. The melody in this arrangement of Cheer Up, Pull Away is passed between the oboe and the Bb clarinet; resembling the call and response of the Maluku sea chanties. The dynamically loud and abrupt sixteenth note arpeggios throughout the piece represent abrupt transition from drowsy and fatigued sailors to alert and motivated crew after participating in the chanty. This arrangement is suggested for those in grades 8, 9 and 10. Students will gain experience working with a six-eight time signature and controlling dynamics without being distracted with difficult fingerings and octaves. This piece may be used in solo and ensemble competitions throughout the United States of America, or as a fun piece for students to become comfortable in a six-eight time signature. There are 68 measures in this piece. The tempo is set to be dotted quarter note = 80 BPM; students should perform the piece in any tempo best suited to their needs. This piece will be 104 seconds long at quarter note = 80 BPM. Bb Concert Key.

The melody/words was used to haul a rope(foresheet) aft attached to the foresail to lessen the area so you wouldn't keel your sailboat over. The shanty was sung by sailors on clipper ships. There was a long haul on the rope then a short haul, repeated until the foresail was reefed.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462720). This is a little ditty that was played aboard the sailing ships of His (or Her) Majesty's Navy by an onboard fiddler or piper. And to it the sailors would dance, in part for the exercise on a long voyage. Samuel Pepys called it The Jig of the Ship. Presumably, a shipboard piper would play it at a comfortable, even slow, tempo, but it's typically performed at breakneck speed. Or you can start slow and accelerate to stupid. I put this arrangement together for our quintet to play at a U.S. Navy ship reunion. It's moderately brisk, right at the lunatic fringe of our capabilities. It's for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (a trombone would be near impossible) and tuba, and no one escapes unscathed. Kinda fun, but it's a lot of work for a minute and a half of music.If you want other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Here’s an arrangement of Verdi’s ‘Brindisi’ from his opera La Traviata. It’s a great addition to any concert programme – and not too difficult either. Brindisi is a port city on the Adriatic Sea, in southern Italy’s Apulia region. The red-stone Aragonese Castle stands on a small island at the harbor’s entrance. The tall Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia, a rudder-shaped limestone memorial to sailors, has sea and city views. Across the harbour, the Swabian Castle of Brindisi dates from the 13th century.

This is a slow march.Inspiration: Storm Bay is the opening of the river leading to Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. It was named by Abel Tasman on the 30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. La Paloma means 'The Dove' and was written and composed in the 1850's by the Spanish composer Sebastian Iranier (1809-1865) from the Basque region on Spain. He later became known as Sebastian Yradier and this name is used as acredit on most sheet music. La Paloma quickly became popular outside of Spain especially in Mexico, and is known around the world. In Zanzibar the tune is played at the ends of weddings, in Romania its sang at the ends of funerals, in Mexico its known as the 'second anthem', and in Germany as a sailors lament. Yradier died in 1865 before he knew just how popular his song would become. Great songs stand the test of time, and this one is definately in such a catorgory.La Paloma has been arranged here as a solo for Cornet or Flugelhorn with a full band accompaniment, and would be a great addition to any concert program, particularily a park or garden party engagement.La Paloma is a grade 2/3 piece with an easy listening Latin American feel to it along with an obligato passage in the soloist part.
