The painting depicts a strikingly red canvas with shocking figures  of trees scattered through it. Created by the Thai artist Tawee Ratchaneekorn, he had this to say about his painting: “If a forest is gone, people have gone.†is the concept of this work’s creation. Natural resources and the environment— which have nurtured people throughout periods of time from prehistory to many civilizations— are being harmed. The forest then screams, with faces on the trees. In the introduction, we hear the 12- note-row (yes, it's pure 12-note serial, but there's no need totell them this). Then very long pauses as the spider waits for prey to approach. Frenetic activity leads to the capture of prey and its consumption. The arachnophobe (instruments and players) scream on seeing the spider. A relatively consonant waltz depicts the halting, tapping, very careful, mating dance of the male. She eats him anyway. Next we limn the hundreds of babies hatching and abseiling down on their threads. This of course makes the arachnophobe scream again. Don't use for a wedding, but perhaps for that murder-mystery evening or ghost hunt?DURATION: 4 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

The eruption continued until the late morning of August 27th, destroying over 70% of the island, the surrounding archipelago, and collapsed into a caldera.This event is counted as one of the deadliest and most destructive events in recorded history. Over 36,000 deaths were the result of both the eruption and the tsunamis that were created. Weeks later, the eruptions on Krakatoa intensified, causing explosions on neighboring islands. Globally, these explosions had effects on Australia and as far away as South Africa.The 1883 Krakatoa eruption also darkened the sky worldwide for years afterwards, caused by volcanic ash. Spectacular sunsets were created and they inspired artists to capture the effects. British artist William Ashcroft made numerous color sketches, attempting to capture the look of the red-tinged skies, and there is a theory that Edvard Munch's blood-red sky depicted in the painting, The Scream, was inspired from his observing the color of the sky over Norway at the time.Of all the original compositions and arrangements that I have written, this is my first foray into program music. Program music can be a difficult genre; has the story really been conveyed? Does the orchestration fit the composition? Is it too short, or rather, way too long.I decided to write this for woodwind choir, rather than woodwind quintet. The sound of a woodwind choir offers enough variety of sound to convey both the frenetic quality of panic, fear, and desperation of a volcanic eruption, and yet the calm, sadness of how people felt, not knowing when things were going to erupt again.

When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.

It has become a legendary screamer march for circuses to introduce the clowns. The march is in three sections with some very lyrical moments followed by the chromatic break section featuring the low brass. The final trio section is also lyrical and chromatic at the same time. When played as a screamer the tempo is often taken to extremes. Wes Ballenger has done an amazing job of arranging this famous march for a virtuosic Trombone quintet.

They are southern Italian folk dances. For this piece, I assume we have a woman happily singing the folk song Santa Lucia, lauding the attractions of Naples, when she is bitten by a tarantula wolf spider. She screams, suffering hysteria and pain, and must now frantically dance, perhaps all night, because this is the only way to recover. Finally she can return to the calm singing.  3 minutes or so, depending on how fast the performers can play and how many repeats they have to make.

This arrangement is in the style of Slow Jazz and would add a great feature piece to any Brass Band reportoire.

III COLOSSEUM This ethereal song combines a mystical setting recalling the deaths of thousands in the Roman Colosseum. While visiting the modern-day site, Jerry McElveen had visions of the screaming crowds while gladiators and others were killed as entertainment. He was upset to see the current graffiti marring the stone walls of the structure.  The piano score and vocal looks difficult...but several performers have not found it to be problematic. It works as a more modern setup for the jazzy closer, DAVID Mvt IV. If the piano intro to Colosseum, seems to lag before the soprano enters...take the second ending on the intro... that will avoid the star singer having to wait too long! She chose seven of these poems in a contrasting style and assembled them into a single work, striving to create an unusual orchestration which reflects this delicate, fantastic and sensual qualities of these poems. Her orchestration uses a small group of strings which are re-enforced by a harpsichord, a vibraphone, a harp and percussion, often superimposed, which serve to underline the delicate character of the poems. IN addition, she uses all styles of vocal production, from whispered passages to spoken words or screams, and from singing normally to sprechgesang. The work finishes serenely with a long melody in flute upon which the baritone repeats the last phrases of the poem in a long perdendosi. The voice and the flute slowly die away without there being a definite ending to the work, which allow the listener to imagine that the work continues, as in a waking dream. One could imagine hearing the echo of the words whispered by the baritone and the arien and luminous sounds of the flute which has lulled us as a soloist throughout the seven poems of the cycle. The orchestration is for 4 percussion, harp, harpsichord, piano and strings (44221). The piece generally lasts approximately fourteen minutes. The composer has intentionally broken with tradition by using instrumental notation for the vovcal part. This notations gives, in her view, a greater ease of reading when the voice exchanges with the flute. This version for flute, voice and piano is identical, as much as is possible, with the orchestral version, excpet for short segments in the 5th and 7th poems. These differences only affect the flute and piano parts and do not affect the vocal part. The Baritone may therefore use this score for performances with orchestra. The Flutist should use the part included in the orchestral parts for performances with orchestra. This work was first performed at the Villa Medicis during Thérèse Brenet time spend there during her Prix de Rome voyage. It was recorded in 2014 with Kurt Ollmann Baritone, Christel Rayneau, flute and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage. The orchestral materials are on rental from the publisher.

Following the lines of the Spike Jones recording of the William Tell Overture, the approximation is similar to the original beginning, and after that, it is my own for the UK brass band set up. Many fx required here, gargling in harmony is one, tuned pots and pans another, shouting and screaming and canine imitation also needed and the bashing of tin drinks trays. Undoubtedly a 100% entertainment concert show-stopper and was used once at BIC Gateshead by the Fairey Band. Make Em' Laugh.

This is a Basie Style chart It is meant to swing and not to just to show off technique. The structure is 12 bar blues. It can be opened for solos,there is a 2nd trumpet solo with backgrounds. This is a relaxed chart with Basie Klinks at all the right spots...all written out The ending is a series of tags, first one soft last one fffff with Basis Klinksat the end. The bass part must be played as written because every note is a part of what is happening in the rest of the band. If the bass line is cluttered it won’t swing. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere.
