Composing Tiny Shattered Pieces was a truly immersive musical journey due to the sheer amount of time it took to write it and how much time I spent thinking about this piece. Since the work was commissioned before the start of the 2020 pandemic, but rescheduled for a premiere 2 years later – I could write, re-write and re-think this piece from start to finish multiple times. In the end there was enough material for a 30-minute composition, but so much of it was so different due to the different moods one would go through during a pandemic, that compiling it into 5 separate short musical statements was the most natural conclusion.   The music embarks on a journey of discovery, love, destruction, reconciliation, suffering, and by the end of it – war. Naturally at the end of a 2-year period a person evolves and goes through a myriad of different experiences, but few artists or composers experienced the world going through a tectonic shift from the early 2000s until now, therefore I felt it necessary to touch upon many different topics through the language of this work, including the personal and the universal. Each of the movements is a complete statement but together the movements form a larger pyramid-like structure, completing each other’s thoughts, propelling them and eventually bringing them to conclusion.    It should be noted that by the time I was reaching the end of the compositional process – a major war started with Russia invading Ukraine. Being a Ukrainian-born composer, the issue affected me deeply and sipped into the music by the end of the 4th movement. This is where the pyramid reaches its peak and should be appropriately shaped by the musicians.   The piece is approximately 10 minutes in duration and is to be performed with utmost freedom, gusto and conviction. The performers must not shy away from making the sounds crunch together, piercing through the hall, but at the same time the more quiet, gentle parts should be appropriately shaped and bring much needed comfort. The work is about contrasts, outbursts of emotions, quiet sobbing, rage and solitude.  The piece is approximately 12 minutes long. It was commissioned by Dame Evelyn Glennie in cooperation with Calgary's Land's End Ensemble.

In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Ballet Synopsis: Evil Snow Sprites make a mirror that reflects all that is mean and evil. When it shatters, its splinters drift to the far corners of the world. Gerde and Kai are two poor children who live in Copenhagen in the early 19th Century. They live innocently with their parents and Grandmother and tend a rooftop rose garden. One winter night Kai meets the Snow Queen and a splinter from the mirror enters his eye. The Snow Queen returns and abducts Kai. Although accepted as dead, Gerde deeply feels otherwise and begins her quest to find her friend, traveling through the four seasons, sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening. The Lady of Spring takes her as an addition to her fantastical garden filled with tales and dreams of the flowers who dwell there. But when Gerde sees the rose on Spring's bonnet she wakes from her enchantment. Her tears spring back the roses who tell her Kai is not dead. She flees from the garden. Gerde grows up in the wilderness and a crow says that he has seen Kai at the Palace of the Queen of Summer. They hurry there to find a magnificent ball in progress. Gerde is introduced to the Kai lookalike but knows something is not right. The Queen of Summer helps Gerde on her way and lends her a coach and gives her a magic red rose that will never fade.As coach searches for Kai, it enters the season of Autumn and is accosted by robber girl and a band of theives. They dance in an rousing, energetic dance taunting her. When the morning comes Gerde tells her fellow captive animals of her quest to find Kai and that all hope is lost. The pigeons finally tell Gerde that Kai was abducted by the Snow Queen many years ago. The robber girl overhears them and has a change of heart letting her go with her reindeer to the far North of the Snow Queen.Gerde finds Kai in the palace of the Snow Queen piecing together the evil mirror. She gives Kai up for dead but leaves the rose of summer beside him. Kai spots the rose and he sheds a tear. Although it borrows its short melodic and rhythmic motif from Debussy’s still and calm work, its mood is diametrically opposed – in truth, an appropriate title for this movement might well be blood in the snow! After the texture unwinds, shatters, and disintegrates, the three instruments feel their way in the dark and gradually attempt to piece things back together. Nevertheless, the piano concludes with a muffled, resigned version of its introductory gesture, suggesting that nothing has been resolved. The second movement oscillates between contemplative and playful moods. This ambivalence is present from the start, when the searching violin solo of the opening is punctuated by playful bird-like comments from the piano. The clarinet ushers in a faster middle section during which the three instruments have a dialogue and both the bird idea and the violin’s rising

Eros, for cello solo, op.28 Love shattered my mind, like a storm in an oak forest on the mountainside.«ΈÏος δ’ ετίναξΠμοι φÏÎνας, ως άνεμος κατ’ ÏŒÏος δÏυσίν εμπÎτων.» Sappho (V, 47 Lobel – Page) (2005), The work was a commission by the Thomas Tamvakos Greek Composers Archive. The power of love as Sappho poetically saw it and the composer musically hear it thousand years later. In a mystic and romantic-expressionistic as well mood Eros is based in a dialectical juxtaposition between the ancient Greek spirit and the contemporary musical thinking. The short citations of the famous Orestes stasimo from the Euripidian trilogy which recurs periodically works as a sacred voice from the past that leads the composer through the centuries and motivates his creativity. The work has been performed twice in 2006: by Dimitris Magriotis at Philippos Nakas Concert Hall, Athens and by Olga Articopoulou at EXPO ATHENS Concert Hall, in the Anthousa String Festival receiving a honoured distinction.In its version for viola solo (2010, op.28b), it has been performed by Andrea Hemmenway in Composer's Portrait, organized by the Greek Composers Union at Hellenic Conservatory in Marousi in 2010 and in her personal recital at Vryssaki Hall, Athens Plaka, the same year. In 2019 the work transcribed also for violin solo (op.28c) for the Greek soloist Tania Sikelianou to whom the transcription is dedicated.
