Sight-Singing 2 is divided into two parts. Part 1 comprises 95 exercises in either single or 2-part form. These cover methods to secure the line of the pitch, sequences, singing a lower part, ties, awareness of chord structure, canons, chromatic movement, modulations and tone rows. A section of 2-part exercises is also included using treble and bass clefs. Part 2 consists of 16 solo pieces which are presented in the treble clef, and aim to develop the singer’s ability to pitch independently from their accompaniment. These short pieces are based on chords, intervals, the Dorian mode, pentatonic scales, melodic minor scales, chromatic movement and changing time signatures. The aim of this volume is to develop a secure sense of pitch, providing a comprehensive range of styles and challenges which will be of value not just to singers but to all dedicated musicians. The skill of being able to ‘vocalise’ a melody independently and accurately is a valuable asset for all musicians regardless of vocal ability or instrument played. How to use this resourceThis pack comprises three stages, the third of which should be gained from success with the first two:1. PerformingAn original performance piece is provided for mixed classroom ensemble. This piece features a musical device of some kind as its focus. There will obviously be other musical components included within the piece as well, but the main element will be very apparent.2. ComposingWorksheets are provided to enable students to develop their own compositions based on the same focus as the performance piece. Elements of the performance piece are highlighted and short, developmental activities will lead to the students developing their own musical ideas.3. Understanding Summary worksheets are provided to enable students to demonstrate their understanding of the topic.There are two musical elements which appear in all pieces within this PCU series. They are dynamics and articulation. All performance pieces contain them and opportunity is provided to include them within the composing exercises as well.Printing and CopyingThe purchaser may print or copy all pages of this resource as required, but must not distribute to others. Lift Every Voice and Sing was initially written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson in 1905 and has become known a national anthem for African-Americans. The initial hymn tune is intense with grandeur and immense hope. With this arrangement; I have set the music more somberly to reflect the seriousness of the text that speaks of the bitterness and anguish of America’s dark racial past that is still rampant today. This allows the listener to reflect on the text thoughtfully. Remarkably, I have heard this hymn many times throughout my lifetime both in predominantly Caucasian denominations and predominantly African-African American denominations and the differences in interpretation are fascinating. White congregations tend to sing this hymn spritely with great pomp and circumstance while the Black congregations tend to sing it more labored and meditative as if it were a dirge. I believe both interpretations are valid, but interesting given its context. This arrangement is written for medium-high voice, cello obbligato and piano accompaniment.

It's Not Unusual is a song written by Les Reed and Gordon Mills, first recorded by a then-unknown Tom Jones, after it had first been offered to Sandie Shaw. He intended it as a demo for her, but when she heard it she was so impressed with his delivery that she recommended he sing it instead. The BBC initially refused to play it because of his sexy image, but UK pirate radio did not. He sang the song twice in 1965 on The Ed Sullivan Show in New York City, on 2 May and 13 June. He did it again on 21 April 1968. This arrangement is a great addition to the Brass Band Library which will carry on for years to come.
