It was begun in 2013 and completed in 2016; the total duration is 6:41. The texts by Solomon Ibn Gabriol, Samuel L. Clemens (aka Mark Twain), and one attributed to Fra Giovanni Giocondo but probably written by Earnest Temple Hargrove, take the listener on a journey from grief/death to hope/heaven. Themusical language is unapologetically chromatic. Other than perhaps the most academic of composers these days, chromaticism has largely fallen into disuse. Although the vast majority of my music written since around 1998 is either tonal or more often modal, I occasionally return to a chromatically saturated musical language to express certain emotions through sounds that are alien to thosemusical languages. I did so in the present title with the intent of painting the three texts more poignantly. While most passages feature familiar-sounding triads and octaves, the melodies, harmonies and cadences sound unfamiliar. It is to be hoped that the listener will find the music both moving and engaging, challenging one to listen to these three songs in new ways.-Stanley M. Hoffman, 9/11/2016, fifteen years after 9/11.

Extinction Events (2nd movement - It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players, although the 2nd movement is easier. This is the second movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Cuckoos are quiet reminders of spring when they first appear at the Marsden, United Kingdom area where they have a Cuckoo fair every year. Their habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate as their numbers slowly decrease. In the music, the cuckoos in the 3rd clarinet part get progressively sad sounding and simply disappear. Fiesta is, of course, of a Latin flavour - lots of sunshine and good humour. I imagine it descibes a party with good food, dancing and much showing off.

The Cello III-VII parts are generally more simple, so it is possible to play this arrangement with a mix of experience levels -- perfect for a festival, school, or cello studio to perform. He was simply one of millions in the vast American workingclass, one who was known to jot down a poem or two now and then.Here we have six examples of his work, poems which he wrote for his childhood sweetheart whom he waited fifty years to marry. Maxwell’s great grandson asked me to set these poems to music saying, the poems illuminate a picture of life in the American midwest during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His poetry serves as a lens through which we can view his . . . youthful romantic view of nineteenth-century prairie life.Since the poems are so imbued with nostalgia and 19th century romanticism, I endeavored to set them with an equally strong sense of the classic art song tradition.Curiously, these songs feel longer than they actually are. There are many pieces about which one could say the same thing with less charity, but in this case it’s a good thing: the poems are quite short (the longest is only twelve lines, the shortest only four!)The entire cycle lasts just under 12 minutes. The audio sample includes most of one song (A June Night) and all of a second (Have You Found a Place?). These are enough to give you a sense of the whole cycle.

(Who´s up first?)and there was a race upstairs! Right from this call and this situation this piece of music originated in my head – full of good mood! You may play this piece a bit wildly – just like the competition race of our children in the time when they were still small. As I noticed later, the piece has only white keys – and sounds jazzy nevertheless! The original version was a piece for big band with solos (look part B and C). The piece fits on two pages and has a rondo form as it is written above: Intro A B A C A. Sorry to say that my music program does not understand it, I don´t know why, but you`ll understand it, and this is the main thing! Have great fun with sports and games! And music! Das Stück passt gut auf zwei Seiten und ist auch in Rondoform, wie es darüber steht, leicht zu verstehen: Intro ABAC A. Leider versteht es mein Notensatzprogramm nicht, warum, weiß ich nicht. Holst liked to throw the melody around to all the parts, so everyone gets to shine. The music is not difficult, however I would suggest advanced intermediate due to some challenging key changes. There are 3 movements (Prelude, Air, and Dance) and the sound sample has a short section of each. The entire piece runs about 7 minutes. The instrumentation is a bit different, but it would make a good ensemble contest piece for high school players.

Pavel Friedmann wrote the poem “The Butterfly†in 1942 in the Terezin Ghetto when he was 21. He was murdered in the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1944. Pavel was born in 1921 in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) to a Jewish father and a Christian mother. The Butterfly is a living symbol of the beauty of freedom. Such a free spirit could never have survived the confines of the Warsaw ghetto. But while the butterfly did fly away, the spirit and love of freedom it represented never left the souls of the Jews of the ghetto. They always prayed that one day the barbed wire would come down and the butterfly would reappear. The butterfly flutters there today, but many of the Jews who prayed for its return did not live to welcome it back. The first performance of The Butterfly was given on May 8, 1988 at JASA in New York City. The performers were: Andrew Bolotowsky, flute Glenn Rhian, vibraphone Mimi Stern-Wolfe, reciter There are at least two versions of the poem The Butterfly due to different translations.This work uses VERSION 2 as translated here: The last, the very last, So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow. Perhaps if the sun's tears would sing against a white stone... Such, such a yellow carried lightly way up high. It went away I'm sure because it wished to kiss the world goodbye. For seven weeks I've lived in here, penned up inside this ghetto, but I have found my people here. The dandelions call to me and the white chestnut candles in the court. Only I never saw another butterfly. That butterfly was the last one.
