I came up with the lyrics at around 3am in the morning of 3rd December 2014 sitting at a desk in room 703 of the De Syloia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam. Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …†and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.â€It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. Fair Katrinelje and Pif-Paf-Poltrie is a comedic dialogue. Our hero, Pif-Paf-Poltrie, is out to seek the hand of his beloved, the Fair Katrinelje, in marriage. Being the gentleman that he is, he approaches in turn each member of his beloved's family to ask their permission. Father Hollenthe, Mother Malcho, Brother High-and-Mighty, and Sister Käsetraut all respond in turn similarly – essentially, If it's all right with everyone else, it's all right with me. The challenge for the vocalist is to convey the essence and the hilarity of the dialogue by highlighting, with the mannerisms of the voice, the attitudes and characteristics of each character speaking. Above each character's lines, it is made clear whom it is that is speaking and the emotional context within which it is being spoken. There seemed to be no way out, but there was a way out. All I had to do was accept that life had changed, that I had changed, and I needed to make the best of it. After making that decision life got better and better. I realized that the true plan for life was to create our own homes and families, and that sooner or later we will all return to our heavenly home. I love being home, and at the homes of my siblings, friends, and parents. Home is not really a physical place so much as it is where we are surrounded by people who love us. For me, being home is being where I am loved and accepted.

(A0.873886). This arrangement was made for the Edmonton Horn Choir, created and led by Mary Fearon. The arrangement was specifically meant for a flash mob event in City Center Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is based off of the traditional holiday, public domain songs, The First Noel, Jingle Bells, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Silent Night and Dona Nobis Pacem. It is designed with a beginning and ending meant to facilitate the casual assembling and disassembling of a group. There are 4 parts. All beginner in difficulty, save for maybe few measures of bass clef. All can be performed within a 2 octave range. It is relatively short. Each part fits on one page so it can be taped to the back of a fellow flash mobber. The manner of entering and exiting can be experimented with. The way we did it was each horn part entering a full phrase plus 2 measures apart and done in a round, then 2nd ending taken on cue. It sounds more pleasant and orderly this way. Originally was meant for people to start at the beginning of any bar during The First Noel and for it to become kind of dense and ambiguous until everybody went to the second ending at the same time. Whatever way you want though. Same with the exit for Dona Nobis Pacem.

Published by Erik Cole (A0.996121). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Faced with trying to recreate the uniqueness of Ravel’s use of the solo Alto Saxophone, I decided to give that part to a solo Oboe d’Amore. It’s quite distinct, and conveniently just exactly fits into the range of the instrument. Many groups won’t have access to a d’amore, though, so I have included an alternate part for English Horn. Using it does make this the only movement that requires 2 English Horns, however. This is also the movement where I discovered that the cheap recording equipment I’m using currently doesn’t like long sustained tones, and there are a lot of them in this movement. For whatever reason, there’s a lot of distortion on them in the MP3, and I apologize for not being able to figure out how to correct that.

The Flex Orchestra Series The Flex Orchestra arrangements are hymn settings that adapt to the available instrumentation. These were born from a desire to have beginning players participate in worship by playing side-by-side with more experienced players. So this series can fit whatever players you have. These arrangements are written with a melody part written in treble clef, alto clef and bass clef. The melody part is identical for all instruments with slight variations in register. Each instrument also has an ensemble part. The ensemble part is unique to the specific instrument. The glue that holds it all together is the piano accompaniment. With one or more instruments playing the melody, then you can use any combination of instruments. As long as you have a melody part with the piano accompaniment, you can add any other instrument on their ensemble part. The Flex Series changes with the group of players you have. Play this arrangement as a solo with piano, or any combination of duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano.

My arrangement for brass band is inspired by the style of Lucky Chops, so even though this is a brass band, saxophones are involved. This type of brass band originated in New Orleans. Program Notes: -Drumset player, even though I've written a full part for you, the idea is that you play whatever you want, as long as it fits the style of the piece. Treat my part for you as a base, build off from it however you please. -Optional 8vas are HIGHLY recommended. Each time you make a noise, do something wildly different from before.
