This arrangement works for a trio or a quartet, splitting the first part and incorporating improvised backgrounds in the solo section with a quartet. With a trio, the cello 1 part plays the melody in double stops, cello 2 taps on the body of the cello to replicate a drum part, and cello 3 plays the bass line. The base line is bowed during the melody and plucked during the solos. The solo section is optionally improvised or an included transcription of Miles Davis' solo is played. This arrangement is read from a two-page score. Duration is approximately 3:55 with two repetitions of the solo section (or playing the Davis solo). Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811134). Jim Pugh's 4 x 2 x 1 is written for Bass Trombone solo with a double Trombone Quartet accompaniment. It is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 8 1/2 minutes in length. Here is what Jim Pugh says about his composition 4 x 2 x 1: Dave Taylor and I have had a long musical association going back to my first recording sessions with him in New York in 1976 and continuing for 30+ years, including, among many things, two Pugh/Taylor Project recordings. When Dave was putting together the 1999 Manhattan School of Music Trombone Day, he asked me to write a piece featuring him along with his invited guest artists, the Four Of A Kind Trombone Quartet and the Vienna Trombone Quartet – hence the title: 4 (quartet) x 2 (two of them) x 1 (1 soloist). I enjoyed the opportunity to feature not only the bass trombone but, at times, the bass trombone trio that the orchestration provides. The piece is loosely in Rondo form. After an initial statement of the Theme, there follows three unrelated Vignettes separated by variations on the original Theme. A brief GP introduces an improvisation from the bass trombone soloist leading to the final statement of the Theme. The score reflects the correct positioning of the players, left to right, with the two quartet bass trombones on either end of the group and the two first tenor players in the middle, flanking the bass trombone soloist. A little aside here, the tenor trombone solo beginning in measure 77 was specifically written for another dear friend, colleague and collaborator, Joe Alessi. It was a great thrill and honor to have been asked to write music for not only Dave but also two of the best trombone quartets in existence at that time, knowing that anything I wrote would be so beautifully performed. This piece was recorded on the Signum Records CD: The Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble Plays The Music of James Pugh and Daniel Schnyder.

Extinction Events (2nd movement - It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo by John Gibson was written as a submission to the International Clarinet Association's 2018 Composition Competition. Written for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet, it is a four movement work for very advanced players, although the 2nd movement is easier. This is the second movement only...the others may be purchased separately: Buzzy Delights, Walrus Jump, and Yaguarete Surprise (Argentine Jaguar). The entire set of 4 movements may also be purchased. Simply type extinction events Gibson in the search bar at the top.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Only if we help shall they be saved. Cuckoos are quiet reminders of spring when they first appear at the Marsden, United Kingdom area where they have a Cuckoo fair every year. Their habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate as their numbers slowly decrease. In the music, the cuckoos in the 3rd clarinet part get progressively sad sounding and simply disappear. I've always wanted to know what power chords would sound like on a Flute and decided to arrange Paranoid to find out. I am very pleased with the results and hope that you agree. There are two ways that this arrangement can be played that can get two sounds. Playing it as written will give a medieval sound, which is what the MP3 file sounds like. The second option is to add Flute Beatboxing. Whenever a part has Quarter notes jumping 5ths (measure 5 Flute 3) the performer instead of playing normally can use strong Puh and Caa articulations to sound like a drum kit. I have attached a video using this technique to play the super mario bros theme to better describe what I mean by Flute Beatboxing. There is also an optional Jet Whistle in Flutes 1 and 2 in measure 20. Both techniques create a unique sound that accurately reflects the source material as well as giving musicians more expressive capabilities. At this time, I have been unable to attach individual parts. If you would like individual parts to go with the score let me know and we will work something out! Maybe you have become comfortable with the way things are or, perhaps, you are so scared of change that just thinking about it gives you anxiety, but not all change is bad change. If we take a moment to observe the natural occurrences that take place around us every day – sunrises and sunsets, tides coming in and going out, the transformation of winter to spring – we can begin to see that change is a necessary part of growing and developing into who we. However, these moments in your life are not always easy ones. Anew explores the journey of someone experiencing a moment of great change in their life. What sort of emotions are they feeling? What thoughts are going through their head? As someone who has gone through a big shift in my career path, I wanted to compose a piece to help me process my emotions and organize the thoughts in my head on why I felt this change needed to happen. Having the motto “words fail music speaks,” I was inspired as a composer by way of ostinato rhythms, melodic extension, and juxtaposed musical styles to help unpack what words simply could not quantify.

As a teenager, I was definitely exposed to a fair amount of their music for some reason. It's not always easy to transform this kind of music into an idiom that sounds good as instrumental chamber music, however, this is part of my quest to develop a broad range of popular music that I can play live with a small group on the instrument I love - the horn.This is great for university students and professionals... maybe even high school students. There are not a lot of great, challenging horn quartet arrangements out there, like this one is. This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and rock genres. The melody gets passed around so it's fun and interesting for everyone. Score, parts and cover arts included. I hope someone out there tries this arrangement and has fun!

Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873039). I first met the Acacia Quartet a couple of years back, playing in a show I put together for Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, T​ he Beatles Unplugged​. What a joy to discover a quartet of such expert musicians who are also so open to playing such a wide variety of music, from The Beatles to Brahms! I wrote this piece ​Winter Love​ for us to perform together.Composing a piece for specific performs is, I imagine, something like tailoring a bespoke suit. I wanted to give them something with which they could show off their unique versatility; creating rich, warm, blended sounds one minute and fiery, energetic, even whimsical tones the next. I didn’t want to write just a quartet at the time because, perhaps selfishly, I simply wanted to be a part of it!The title makes it seem like the work is programmatic, but it’s not. I just couldn’t think of a title for it. My partner Glennda came up with that, and I dedicate the piece to her.-- Sally Whitwell
