German • English • French.Michel Blavet (1700-1768) was a very famous and popular musician in his lifetime. Although he was an autodidact on many instruments, his main instrument was the flute traversière which he played left-handed. His compositions mix both Italian and French styles. Formally, his sonatas are suites and often have programmatic titles. The sonata op. 2 No. 4 is also called La Lumague“. Marie de Lumague (1599–1657) founded the Caritas movement in France during the reign of Louis XIII. It is assumed that both this woman and her work inspired Blavet to write this beautiful sonata.

The 12 trio sonatas were originally written for 2 violins with cello or harpsichord. The publication was supported by George II who gave Boyce 14 years of copyright protection from 1745. The subscribers' list printed in the edition included everyone of importance and included G.F. Handel and Thomas Arne. The editing has been lightly done, additional dynamics in parentheses ( ), slurs added in dashed lines. A couple of short passages in the 2 upper parts have been transposed up an octave to suit the range of the instruments. The bassoon part can also be played on a cello. The Trio Sonata can be played by players of about grade 5 - 6 ABRSM and is also suitable for more advanced players and professionals as concert repertoire.

Gabrieli's Sonata Pian 'e Forte for 8-part Antiphonal Trombone Ensemble has been beautifully arranged (down a fifth from the original key) by Russel McKinney. The work (Ch.175) is part of the 1597 Sacrae symphoniae, published posthumously which contains sixty-three choral and instrumental works, many in multi-choir formations. This 8-part Sonata is in two choirs....a high one and a low one (in this case choir II uses three bass trombones with an optional Contrabass Trombone!)The most unique aspect of this masterpiece is its use of printed dynamics...originally thought to be the first work of its sort; Pian (soft) and Forte (loud). These dynamic markings are central to the structure of the work.This 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for moderately advanced to advanced performers. Parts 1 A and B are in tenor clef. Parts 4A, 2B,2C & 2D are for Tenor-Bass or Bass Trombones. This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Violin Octet, consisting of 8 Violins, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs.
