Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1350510). This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Â I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody. Â The accompaniment, part 2, has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line. Â I have altered the melody, part 1, and moved much of it to the off beats. Â As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato. Â This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire. Â (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir with piano accompaniment.) Â (Also as a piano solo.)range - part 1 melody - 10th, 3rd space C to high E; part 2 walking bass line, octave and a half, low B to 4th space E2 pages score, 1 page @ part, Â 2:05 minutes.

This is a solo classical guitar 'mashup'/medley of Also Sprach Zarathustra (widely known from film 2001: A Space Odyssey) by Richard Strauss with the traditional Happy Birthday song. It begins with Also Sprach Zarathustra (the portion from 2001: A Space Odyssey)--then at the penultimate dominant chord, switches to Happy Birthday in a similar style, then at the Happy Birthday penultimate dominant chord, returns to the final three melody chords of Also Sprach Zarathustra. The playing level is intermediate classical guitar... even playable by a good early intermediate player. This arrangement is in standard notation with TAB. Arranged by Bradley Powell, who records as The Candlelight Guitarist...the entire arrangement can be seen and heard at the video link provided. If a player ONLY wants to play Also Sprach Zarathustra, they can skip from the end of measure 14 to the beginning of measure 24). At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. But whereas Robert Schumann took it as the starting point of his romanticism, Killmayer doesn’t allow himself the freedom to develop poetic melodies. Just as Schumann deliberately decided to live within the constraints of a mental asylum in Endenich, Killmayer favours the constraints of a very limited tonal space. Recurring seconds in the piano part illustrate the confines in the life of the ill composer. Even the addition of a vibraphone, bongo and conga cannot overcome these boundaries in the end. The only option left is to look inwards for an escape. The main work to be featured was Robert Schumann's Papillons, and the composer was inspired by this piece to write a prelude for that piece. The work is roughly 2-4 minutes, long, and features material from Schumann's piece reimagined into a broad acoustic space. The work is designed to lead in attacca to the Schumann piano work, and although it can be performed separately on its own the composer strongly encouraged the direct connection to be made, without pause.
