Suite for Saxophones Igor Stravinsky (1882 – 1971) Saxophone Quintet SAATB Suite for Saxophones based on piano music of Igor Stravinsky, arranged for saxophone quintet SAATB. Between 1915 and 1917, as an amusement for his two children, Stravinsky wrote a series of eight easy piano duets based on a variety of dance forms. Later, he orchestrated the pieces for small orchestra and arranged them into suites of four movements each. The results are outrageous, witty, and utterly charming. As always, Stravinsky outdoes himself in the inventiveness of his orchestrations, which are filled with unusual instrumental juxtapositions and surprising changes in rhythm and texture. Changing Landscapes for saxophone and piano was written by Scottish composer Emma Arandjelović and consists of three beautifully musically descriptive parts of a journey... It is aimed at saxophonists of around grade 4-6 level and is a refreshing addition to anyone's sheet music library.Two of the three pieces were recently chosen to be included on ABRSM's (The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) Eb and Bb exam syllabus (from 2022 onwards). 'Leaving' as chosen for grade 7, and 'Changing Landscapes' for grade 6.Please view the YouTube video for the full suite. This PDF book comes with; Universal saxophone part (so playable on ANY saxophone), two piano accompaniment parts (one for Eb sax, the other for Bb sax) and full demonstration and accompaniment backing tracks (for both Eb, and Bb saxophones) which are available free of charge on request (see details on your sheet music after printing out). Leaving starts us on our travels, and you can feel the slightly optimistic viewpoint initially as the saxophone and piano playfully sing. A little later however it's as though doubts and anxieties have crept in... (included on Grade 7 ABRSM exams from 2022 onwards).Changing Landscapes (movement 2) propels us forward through twists and turns, almost as if the thoughts are in equal turmoil as the scenery that rushes by. By the end of the movement however, it's very much like these have been resolved, and a peace and newly found optimism is evident in the final movement. (included on Grade 6 ABRSM exams from 2022 onwards).Turning Point (movement 3) is both playful (with its 5/4 time signature) and full of hope as the future comes into view with fresh new beginnings.....

The Jig is the first of the four movements of the “St Paul’s Suite†(op.29, No. 2) written by the British composer Gustav Holst in 1912. Holst composed this work for the string orchestra of the St Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith where he had already been holding the position of Director of Music for seven years. The suite premiered in 1913. This vibrant and vivacious piece immediately captivates the listener. The folcloristic character of the theme and the playful use of the motivic material turn the Jig into a truly “catchy tuneâ€. Even meter and harmony both hold a whole series of charming little surprises. The original version of the composition is characterized by an exquisite setting for string orchestra, which draws the rich and mellow quality of its overall sound especially from those many double stops – mostly played as drones on open strings. Holst’s composition starts from the key of D dorian and finally ends in C mixolydian. The arrangement on hand converts the string setting into a five-part saxophone setting, translating the characteristic features of the original’s folcloristic style as best as possible to the new tone color. By transposing the piece one whole-tone down, the arrangement starts in a register which is very comfortable for saxophones to play in. The piece, however, would end up in a key and/or register in the last part (measure 170 of the original version), which could not be mastered by the saxophone instrumentation chosen for this arrangement. Therefore, the five-bar modulation leading from measure 165 to measure 169 in the original composition has been extended – true to Holst’s style – by two more bars (up to measure 171). This way, the Jig in its arrangement for saxophone quintet now starts in C dorian but finishes in G mixolydian.

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Manuel Francisco Albéniz’ (y Pascual) fascinating and eventful biography is informatively described in the relevant specialist literature; with a few clicks, though, you might also do some successful research on the internet. Albéniz is considered to be the father of Spanish national music per se. Incorporating rhythms and melodies typical of Spanish folk music, he succeeded in embedding folcloristic elements in virtuoso compositions for the piano. Sevilla is the third movement of the Suite Española No. 1 for Piano, Op. 47. The final version of the suite contains eight characteristic pieces. The title of each one of them refers to a geographical region or city in Spain – including Cuba! The folcloristic and improvisational character of Sevilla results from memorable motifs with characteristic embellishments in the melody, - the imitation of other instruments (guitar, castanets, …) in the setting for piano, asymmetrical phrases,the unexpected appearance of new motifs,noticeable fluctuations in tempo and dynamics,unanticipated modulations, the “faulty†compositional structure (e.g. octave parallels between melody and bass in measure 11), and especially from the rhapsody-like middle part with its virtuoso and at the same time cantabile melody in the upper part. The arrangement presented here is notated one whole tone lower than the original version and has been written according to the proven principle of translating: “as true to the original as possible – as free as necessaryâ€. The movement can be performed as a quintet but also in a choral/orchestral instrumentation. In the latter case, the middle part with the soprano saxophone solo (measures 76 – 79 and measures 104 – 110) is recommended to be executed by five soloists.
