The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. The movements of the suite are: Praeludium (Allegro vivace) ( This one) Sarabande (Andante) Gavotte (Allegretto) Air (Andante religioso) Rigaudon (Allegro con brio) The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neoclassicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era. Although it is not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit. It is arranged here for double wind quintet, and I have transposed it from the original G to Ab. (Clarinets in Bb) I have simplified the constant semi quaver throughout, so it is less tiring for the wind player.

The total time of the four movements is eight minutes and fifty seconds at the indicated tempos. The audio clip on this web site is a composite of segments from each movement. These segments range from about 30 seconds to 1 minute. The piece is generally written in a modern or 20th century style that is not dependent on classic style harmonies. This piece is probably requires at least advanced high school players for successful performance. Parts are highly chromatic and ,although finale insertedkey signatures when instrument transpositions were made, there is really no key, only tonal centers. The piece is suitable for recital or concert settings. The download file contains a full score of each movement and parts for Trumpet, Horn and Trombone. Including the title page there are 42 pages total in the file. Each instrument will have seven pages of music and the rest is the score.

The Grim Reaper’s Suite consists of five humorous and at the same dark pieces for five guitars to celebrate the humanity of the Grim Reaper. Two of these pieces are the well-known tune of Happy Birthday in two different and witty variations. The work was conceived to be performed live during the projection of a film by Apostolos Paraskevas called I Finally Did It. The work was premiered in 2009 by an array of well-known soloists at the Iserlohn Guitar Festival in Germany. Duration: approx. 10 minutes Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The final movement is based on the Kyrie and the Dismissal from the Mass for Feasts of the Blessed Virgin (Beata Virgine) Missa Cum Jubilo. All are found in the Liber Usualis. An image of each chant precedes its corresponding movement in this score. The compositional style is tonal. It is representative of Sr. Theophane's earlier work though the Communion may have been written later than the other movements. Performance by Dr. Sheri Masiakowski at Marquette University's Church of the Gesu in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The organ is Schantz IV/115R.

As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to havebeen a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for hisinstrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academicresearch but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present partita, (transcribed in A minor for guitar), was discovered early in this research and it is well known and loved amongstguitarist and lute players of today because of its ease in performance, but at the same timemaintaining a high compositional standard in terms of well-constructed movements incontrapuntal two-part writing.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the opticalresult rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Instrumentalists have tomake their own fingering and choice of position decisions and in most cases they prefer it. My general suggestion for this partita is that open strings should be preferred whenever it is possible, as for example in the second half of the last movement where notes B and E are always sustainedas open strings in the upper part (indicated by the ties) and the required technique and sound result is that of an arpeggio rather than a scalic passage.Although here we have only a five movement partita and it is very easy to navigate from page to page, my usual procedure, followed for larger collections, is to give a thematic index in the beginning of the volume, with the first few bars of every piece given as photographs. If an electronic pad rather than printed music is used to play the music from these PDF archives, these photographs are clickable active links leading strait to the piece concerned, and the header of the page of any piece is another active link leading back to the index. External links to internet sources for further information on the pieces, live performances, etc may be added if considered of particular interest.

St. Helens Suite for trombone and organ takes its inspiration from the hymn tune DUKE STREET (paired with the text “Jesus Shall Reignâ€) by John Hatton, who lived on Duke Street in St. Helens, UK. The suite was meant to have dual purpose as a concert piece and as music for worship services. Each of the first three movements contains fragments of the hymn tune. The first movement, Exordium, is built upon three main ideas that alternate, one of which is the second phrase of DUKE STREET. Aria dolorosa takes its opening melody from the musical motive which appears in bar 32 of the fourth movement, which was composed first. The first phrase of the hymn tune is folded into the Aria, but may not be recognizable because of its Dorian mode and slightly altered rhythm. The Capriccio ritmico is brief and quirky, showcasing some unusual tone colors on the organ, staccato technique on the trombone, and incorporates the third and fourth phrases of the hymn tune. Finally, the Toccata energica merges trombone melodies with toccata-style figurations in the organ, and the full hymn tune, though rhythmically altered, is finally heard in the second half of the toccata.
