This arrangement for trombone, flute, and piano brings together two hymn tunes that are especially popular at the American holiday of Thanksgiving, but appropriate at any time of year. We gather together are the opening words to a poem written by the Dutch poet and composer Adrianus Valerius in 1597 to celebrate the Dutch victory in a long-standing dispute with Spain. 1878, the Austrian composer/conductor Edward Kremser arranged six Dutch folk songs for men's voices, including Prayer of Thanksgiving: Old Dutch Melody, with texts in German. In 1894, Theodore Baker (editor of Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians) translated the German text of Prayer of Thanksgiving into the familiar English version, We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing, that is sung today. Now Thank We All Our God is Catherine Winkworth's (1827-1878) translation of the German Nun Danket Alle Gott, written by Lutheran clergyman and hymn-writer Martin Rinckart (1586-1649). Rinckart's text, based on a passage from Ecclesiasticus, was set to a chorale tune by Johann Cruger (1598-1662) in his 1647 collection, Praxis pietatis melica (The Practice of Piety in Song), a hymnal for use in public worship and private devotions. He was far more gifted with prose than I, so I’ll him explain further:We shall not be surprised to find that [colours’] effects are at all times decided and significant, and that they are immediately associated with the emotions of the mind.Colour, considered as an element of art, may be made subservient to the highest aesthetical needs.General impressions produced by single colours cannot be changed[.] They act specifically and must produce definite, specific states in the living organ. Experience teaches us that particular colours excite particular states of feeling.Goethe goes on to detail these notions in an elaborate, deeply imaginative treatise. Sadly for him, this work was coming out just as the science of optics had begun to give the world an empirical understanding of color, leaving Goethe’s romantic ideas in the margins.But it is those ideas that I find intriguing from a poetic viewpoint, and, in this composition, I shed musical light unto his dramatic descriptions of several different colors.“Yellow-Red†is described as “primordial, impetuous, robust,†to the point of eliciting “extreme excitement†which disturbs and enrages even animals!“Yellow†is portrayed as that being nearest to natural light. It is of “utmost purity and beauty[….] Serene, gay, softly exciting.â€The color “Red-Blue†we are told is “something lively without gladness.â€â€œBlue†is steeped in darkness, a “contradiction between excitement and repose.†It gives one the “impression of cold.†and brings to mind melancholy.

Medium-hard rubber or yarn mallets are recommended. Includes full score and individual parts.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. An original march dedicated to The Eagley Band, with whom I have a very long associationThe opening section is quite chaotic, as the eagles flap their wings and get ready for take-off. Then they are off with a run and a leap and we hear the first theme, a martial tune in the solo euphonium, with fanfare-like interjections on the cornets. At letter B, the tune is expanded to encompass the other sections of the band. Then at letter C, a new idea is introduced which has little obbligato tweets from the soprano and repieno on the repeat.The bass solo continues the military idea with aggressive fanfare interjections over the bass melody.The trio changes style completely and should be played as lightly and delicately as possible. The leaps on baritone and trombones should be clear and well articulated but should fit into the general texture rather than stick out abruptly.At letter G, the grace notes should be played by only one player in each section to avoid sounding like clucking chickens. The grace notes should be extremely light.

First performed by Jordan Wright-Murray on 30 May 2019. The Cimbalom part may be played on a chromatic hammered dulcimer or hackbrett or any other instruments. Gongs - ideally 3 bossed/tuned gongs, non-specific pitches: high, medium, low. Bass drum - ideally an orchestral bass drum. The octave lower transposition indications in the cimbalom part are optional and when given beneath two-note chords only apply to the lower note. From bar 62 to the end the cimbalom may be played an octave higher than written. The cimbalom and gongs are played laissez vibrer throughout. The bass drum is played laissez vibrer, except where marked with x on stem (for example in bar 32), indicating dead stick technique. 'The Troubles of an Automaton' was written by Clementina Maria Black (1853-1922) and published in the New Quarterly Magazine in 1876. The story begins with a fictional advertisement announcing a public exhibition of Mr. Slade's Famous Chess-Playing Automaton. 'The Table and the Chair' by Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) appeared in his collection 'Nonsense Songs' published in 1870. In the poem a table and a chair go for a walk around town, become lost, are taken back to their house by a group of small animals, and then dine and dance together.

Floating, Falling, Flying depicts the odyssey of two balloons who find themselves suddenly and blissfully untethered.  It presents a musical narrative of their unpredictable journey through the skies, back to earth, and, eventually, into the stratosphere. The piece was commissioned by Music Teachers National Association for the 2022 National Conference.  It is a trio for oboe, violin and piano written for students at the intermediate to advanced-intermediate level.  Composed in three contiguous movements, it involves three characters – the balloons (portrayed by the oboe and violin) and the wind (represented by the piano).  In the opening movement (Floating), the balloons escape their moorings and ascend into free space, floating playfully among the clouds with the help of a gentle wind. But, as in life, journeys are not always peaceful.  The second movement (Falling) opens with a hint that something is not quite right.  Undaunted, the balloons continue their carefree ascent amid the ominous signs of an approaching storm.  The wind ultimately asserts its authority, pummeling the balloons back to earth.  As they lie helplessly on the ground, they assess each other’s condition and make feeble attempts to relaunch.  But, without wind, their situation seems hopeless.  In the final movement (Flying), hope is restored as a quiet breeze lifts the intrepid pair back into the air.  They resume their skyward adventure with renewed vigor and joy – dancing through the clouds and, ultimately, out of sight.Floating, Falling, Flying is an exciting and challenging piece for student concerts, recitals and Solo and Ensemble festivals.Brian Chung is a pianist, arranger, composer, conference speaker, former Senior Vice Present of Kawai America Corporation, and author or co-author of four books published by Alfred Music.  He was honored to participate in MTNA’s Collaborative Music Commissioning Project with this composition.

As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. Just as Mr. Lu has said: No matter whether you climb to the top of the mountain or not, we are all embraced by it. It is true that we admire it not only for its great majesty and steep scenery, but, more importantly, for the spiritual meaning behind it, from which we learn humility. When visiting the mountain, the composer was moved to be lost and speechless, and soon reminded of the poem by the poet Kuei-Shien Lee, The Invisible Temple, as follows: I stand high, having no fear of seeing very far. It is blurry far away from here, and nothing can’t be seen. I insist on coldness, silencing the world in my inner rock strata. I am independent of the uproarious world of mortals. Those who are frantic come here, the invisible temple. Still frantic, they return to the world, without appreciating anything. With Lee’s consent, the title of the poem was applied to this work, to represent the composer’s feelings of visiting the Yu-shan Mountain. In this work, several songs from the aboriginal Tsou and Bunun tribes are adopted for the large male chorus and orchestra. It comprises three parts: 1. The talk in the night staying at the Inn Paiyun, 2. The Sunrise, and 3. The Worship, which are to be performed attacca (without pause or interruption). P.S. 1. The work was commissioned by Chew’s Culture Foundation, and was composed in 2005-2006. In December 2007, it was premiered by Chun-Chiang Chiu conducting the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus at the Kaohsiung City Cultural Center and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, respectively. 2. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic opera such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883.  Â
