Dark Eyes (Les Yeux Noirs) Arranged for Easy Classroom Ensemble by Dan JonesYour download includes a full score and all parts in notes and, for guitar/ukulele and bass, chords and TAB. There is some debate as to whether the tune to Dark Eyes (Les Yeux Noirs) is a traditional melody, or a Russian cabaret song. Whichever the case, it is a tune which has captured the imagination of musicians for many years. It was made famous in the 20th Century by the great Belgian jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Several sets of lyrics have also been added to the tune, in many languages. The instrumentation is:(1) The melody for C instruments (such as flute)(2) An easy part for C instruments(3) The same melody for B flat instruments(4) The same easy part for B flat instruments(5) The same melody for E flat instruments(6) A similar easy part for E flat instruments(7) A single-line percussion part(8) A piano part which could be played by a pupil (approximately ABRSM Grade 3) or teacher(9) A ukulele part with chords, the melody and TAB(10) A guitar part with chords, the melody and TAB(11) A bass part in notes and TAB. This part could also be played by a cello, bassoon, trombone or any low-range instrument(12) The melody written in a higher octave for more-advanced players (approx. ABRSM Grade 3-4).In the absence of some of the above, the arrangement is still effective due to the doubling of the melody and all inner parts. The bass part can also be omitted as the piano plays appropriate root notes, and the guitar plays chords. Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Published by CHARIVNA INC. (A0.1072403). Unknown info about song Ochi chornye (Dark Eyes). Poem Ochi chornye (Dark Eyes) was published in Literaturnaya Gazeta on 17 January 1843. Author of the text Eugene Grebinka (1812-1848) - Ukrainian writer, born in Poltava province, a gentleman, an educated man. Verse was dedicated to beloved Maria, daughter of a retired staff captain, landowner Rastenberg. Often say music by unknown author which is incorrect. Romance was performed on the music of waltz Florian Hermann (German by birth). A popular version of melody was written by Adalgiso Ferraris and published around 1910, with German editor Otto Kul. Later Fedor Shalyapin took the Romance Ochi chornye (Dark Eyes) to his repertoire and introduced him to the world during his tour. Shalyapin added to the text a few verses apparently written by him, which dedicated to his future wife - Italian Jola tornagi.

Labé was fluent in Latin and Italian, and a trained musician. She wrote twenty-four sonnets. TRANSLATION Sonnet VIII - I Live, I Die I live, I die, I burn with fire, I drown. BLURRED FORMATIONS - for Concert Accordion and Classical Guitar (2002) DURATION: 10 Minutes PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: While composing Blurred Formations, I was occupied with the ideas of ever-changing spots of color, constantly-moving ocean plants, sea anemones and fish shoals. Usually, these visual images fascinate our eyes, as their continuous formation is truly harmonious and somewhat mysterious. Yet, the endless formations are not necessarily easy to catch or view sharply. These blurred formations in their visual sense, intrigued me to search for their sonic equivalence. Through ever-changing clusters, vague arpeggiations and occasional chromatic melody, I tried to translate my images into sound. In some cases the blur is thick and dark, and in some cases thin, light and spacious. Both the accordion and guitar contribute to the clearness and the blurriness of the formations, each with its own unique timbre.
