Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute. Volume 1 is a collection of Sousa’s earliest efforts of march composition, from 1873 to 1882. Here we witness experimentations in form, key, and construction as the later-dubbed “March King†hones his stride. These arrangements are intended for concert and ceremony alike, enabling brass players to enjoy and share one of their champions.

This piece is inspired by the reading of the book 'Behind the Silence: Music in the Nasca Culture', by the Polish scientist Anna Gruszczyńska-Ziółkowska, which describes the discovery, in 1994, of several antaras (Andean pan flutes) made of clay in a temple in the city of Cahuachi, the political and cultural center of the Nasca culture. The book includes tables with the exact tones that each tube is capable of producing. The Spirits of Cahuachi uses these tones, i.e. their approximate counterpart in our modern tuning system, treating them in different ways, sometimes as chords, sometimes as scales, sometimes as pitch-class sets, fragmenting the sets, and then overlapping the resulting groups, etc. Of course, there is no intention to produce something that resembles the music of the ancient Nasca inhabitants. We don't know anything about their music. None of it has survived with the exception of these tones, these 'spirits' contained in the pipes of the antaras discovered in Cahuachi.

These twenty short pieces were composed between March 15 – 25, 2020, during the first days of self-isolation and social distancing brought about by the COVID 19 global pandemic. They were conceived as a set of dances and meditations, with the intention of providing music for a dance performance. The individual movements themselves are free form in construction. The countertenor (or mezzo-soprano) part is wordless, with the exception of the penultimate song “The Color Fades to Greyâ€, which serves as a poignant moment of heart-on-sleeve passion before the recapitulation of the first movement. The title of the piece, a play on the concept of 20/20 vision, written in the year 20/20, containing 20 movements, and 20 measures in each, was a gift to the tranquility of order. Having 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean you have perfect vision. 20/20 vision only indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance. Other important vision skills, including peripheral awareness or side vision, eye coordination, depth perception, focusing ability, and color vision, contribute to your overall visual ability. There is always more than one way to look at things!Â

After a slow introduction to set the mood in concert E minor- the main theme begins gently and is shared with the instruments throughout. The piece wanders through keys of A major and G minor before returning to the home key, but only briefly before the theme climaxes in a passionate F minor. The piece ends gently as the opening with a sustained series of chords- It is around 4 mins 45 in length. With the exception of the Piano (advanced intermediate) it is intermediate level. Duration: 2' 46. The medieval sequence (sequentia) is a part of the Proper of the Mass, following the Alleluia. It is characterized by a double-versicle structure (1a-1b, 2a-2b, etc. with occasional variations) for any number of stanzas. They were written in great numbers, for the highest feasts, as well as for the lowliest local saints. With a few exceptions (e.g., Victimae paschali laudes, Dies irae), they were expunged in the 16th century by the Council of Trent. This sweet, intimate sequence is really a duo love song to the Virgin Mary. Although the original notation does not show exact rhythms, Anonymous 4 performed it with a gentle 6/8 sway. Scores in two different keys are included, but this song may be sung in any comfortable key.Â

Many French musicians and composers were active at the Cypriot court, and the town of Nicosia became one of the most important centers of the Ars Subtilior style. This piece provides a perfect introduction to the beautiful and mysterious world of this 14th and 15th century musical style. The duration is 3'50. The King, Janus I de Lusignan (1374-1432), was one of the most important figures in the music life of Cyprus. His daughter Anna, upon her marriage to Louis, Count of Geneva, took with her a thick manuscript, written between 1413 and 1426. It consists of 159 folios containing over two hundred polyphonic compositions both sacred and secular. Two peculiarities make this manuscript unique: first, not a single composer is mentioned by name; and second, each work is without exception a unique copy: not one has ever been found in any other manuscript. This, then, is the only record of the Cypriot Ars Subtilior style. The central compositional concern of those working in the Cypriot Ars Subtilior style was the logical, consistent attainment of the polyphonic ideal. Each voice is completely independent of the others, and moves through the polyphonic fabric to form a contour of its own. As to rhythm, Cypriot compositional technique is extremely complex. Ample use was made of rhythmic novelties such as syncopation, color and proportion, and new note symbols permitted the representation of note values that had previously defied graphical rendering. Thus, metric accents in the different voices almost never coincide, and the laws of rhythm were at times out of joint. In fact, a rhythm that was regular and without syncopation would stand out immediately as particularly conspicuous detail. This trio also exists in my adapted versions for either recorders or trombones. Paul Van Nevel has recorded a version for three sackbuts with his Huelgas Ensemble.

Description:Doubt & Determination bridges the gaps between musical eras, as one would hear certain nuance that dates back to the Baroque era but possess a rather modern musical structure. The piece challenges both the listeners and the player themselves. For the public ears, one will have to adapt the performer's perspectives to 'feel' the piece. As the title suggests, both 'Doubt' and 'Determination' are two human perceptions that oppose each other, to understand the music is to find common grounds between them, through unexpected cadences and dynamic change. The performer will have to deliver the technicalities of bringing them together, through detail instructions on dynamics and tempo change. The piece is modeled in Sonata Form. however, it is to be approached with indeterminacy, occasionally granting the performer the freedom through Tempo Rubato and Breath Perceptions.Practice Suggestion:This music can only prevail through expression, thus the commitment for dynamic is of the utmost importance. It is highly suggested to understand what makes this piece unique, a score analysis is always a good start. Mark out the accents (Staccato and Emphasis) and the tempo change. Establish breathing points since the piece has very minimal instructions for that, it is hence highly dependent on the performer's capability to deliver.A proper mindset is essential for the perfect performance.Instrumentations:Certain instruments are optional if a soprano saxophone is proven unavailable. The decision was made to not notate the final chorus as sung however when performed/sung the final chorus could be ad-libbed to emulate the original should the performer desire.-Guitar Strumming- There is a suggested strumming pattern/rhythm contained within the intro. This will fit with the song but feel free to come up with your own! This is to be an aid for learners and a resource for teachers. -Structure- The sheet music follows the structure of the song as heard in the recording. Every artist who has ever entertained us with this classic Hoagy Carmichael creation has jumped right to the chase, that being the verse that begins with Geor - gia,.. Wikipedia refers to the missed component as, the commonly excised introductory verse. Well, I took a good look at that introductory verse, and concluded that there was a pretty good reason nobody sang it. It needed more work than the writers had put into it, in my opinion, which is a nice way of saying that it sucked. So I fixed it, so to speak. I believe that it stands up to scrutiny.The melody line throughout has some modifications in note lengths. It is a piece originally written in cut time, which it isn't really, since it is always being sung in a moody fashion you don't normally expect to find written in 2/2 time. I think maybe that Hoagy had a secret desire to write for movie musicals.I adapted the chord diagrams to make them more suitable for playing along with on the guitar. This arrangement will appeal to anyone who has ever studied Mickey Baker's jazz guitar chords. As I see it, every song is still a tune and should be fun to play. Georgia is no exception.

I wrote this march and dedicated it to my current band, Old Hall Brass, when I was first playing with them in 2003. Now that I'm back with them after a 9 year hiatus, I felt it only appropriate to publish it here.The opening 10 bars are a bit of a muck-around and are entirely optional. OHB's current conductor, John North, likes to entertain, so it's basically a tuning up section, like you would find in an orchestral concert but with some laughs thrown in!The march starts for real at the Segno. There's a fanfare-like opening which leads into the first main melody for the euphonium and solo horn. This is repeated with extra fanfare interjections from the trombones. The bass solo is a fairly traditional part of a march and this is no exception, except that it is not repeated. Another fanfare-like section leads into a reprise of the euphonium/horn melody with interjections from trombones and cornets. The final section is similar to the opening fanfare before the DS. Repeats should not be played on the DS.

When performed by three oboes only this piece is called ‘3 Oboes Drifting’ and begins at bar 2. When performed by a different or larger ensemble it is called ‘Sedge Fen’. Optional: when reading from the score, parts 1, 2 and 3 may change to different parts where indicated [ 1 ], [ 2], [ 3]. If performed this way players will need to read from the score. The part 4 drone on low G is optional and may be played an octave higher or lower. Part 4 reads from the score or is cued by the conductor. If played by a large ensemble some instruments may alternate between parts 3 and 4. Part 3 may be played an octave lower. If necessary reduce the number of players on part 3 at bar 58 to achieve a pianissimo dynamic. If voices are part of the ensemble, female voices may sing part 3 to ‘oo’ and male voices may sing part 4 with an open-lipped hum ‘nn’ or ‘uu’. Programme note ‘Sedge Fen (3 Oboes Drifting)’ is a companion piece to ‘Tricorder (3 Oboes Dancing)’ both of which can be performed by three oboes or by different or larger ensembles. Sedges are flowering plants that superficially resemble grasses or rushes. Members of the sedge family have triangular stems (with occasional exceptions), and their leaves are spirally arranged in three ranks. A fen is a type of wetland fed by surface and/or groundwater.Sedge Fen is a small village in Suffolk, a few miles from Lakenheath, close to the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk borders in England.
