Korofo Moussa's song:The music of the anthem is derived from a praise song for the late-1800s king of Labé, in Fouta Djallon, Alpha Yaya Diallo (or Alfa Yaya). Alpha Yaya is, along with Wassoulou Empire founder Samory Touré, considered central by Guineans to the foundation of the modern Guinean nation, in part because of his fierce attempts to resist colonisation.In 1904, Alpha Yaya was one of many traditional chiefs and kings summoned to a doctrinal conference with French colonists, who were still in the process of consolidating his territory.The chiefs each brought along a retinue for the journey; in Alpha Yaya's retinue was griot Korofo Moussa, from Kissidougou in the south of the country. Alpha Yaya arrived to the conference on its sixth day, and Korofo Moussa is said to have spontaneously improvised, along with his troupe of dancers and kora players, a praise song for Alpha Yaya after he arrived. The song began with the line Alpha Yaya, Mansa bè Manka (Alpha Yaya, mansas (kings) are not the same). According to Fodéba Isto Keira, former Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the performance took place in the building of the modern Directorate of the Judicial Police in the Kaloum sub-prefecture of Conakry.Korofo Moussa's air quickly became popular; it was sung and played by all the griots for the rest of the conference, and within a few days it was known throughout Conakry. Alpha Yaya's personal griot immediately trained to play the song. Upon the return of the kings and their retinues to their regions, it spread throughout the country.Modern anthem:Upon approaching independence in 1958, the lyrics of Korofo Moussa's song were reworked and written in French by artist, choreographer and politician Fodéba Keïta and Jean Cellier for the national anthem of Guinea. Korofo Moussa's melody was retained for the anthem. According to Keira, Keïta used the solfège method when working with the music. Keira stated that the national anthem had to be inspired by something from Fouta Djallon for the sake of avoiding frustrations and preserving national unity.

The original version of E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon in 2001 and premiered by the Eastwind Trio d’Anches (the faculty reed trio from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with the composer on bassoon) during a tour in New Zealand and Australia in May 2001. The premiere of the version for saxophone trio was performed by members of the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet on February 5, 2008.E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was inspired by the Australasian tour and my return home to New Zealand as a performer. Another inspiration was that my dear Grandmother passed away at the age of 94 in February 2001. Due to this there are elements of sadness and happiness throughout the piece. The bittersweet first movement begins melancholy, with a melody that freely switches between minor and major modes, but ends up with a lively dancing section focusing on happy memories, where the chickens from my grandmother’s farm may even be heard. The second movement is lively throughout with extensive use of mixed meter and includes a jazz rock interlude.While the work does not contain any actual New Zealand elements in the music, it was evocative of my time spent there growing up. It is in a style typical of my writing, containing jazzy influences combined with the more traditional. The title is given in Maori (the language of the native Polynesian race in New Zealand) and English and merely relates to the fact that it is written for three woodwind instruments. This work has been performed throughout North America and the South Pacific.This work also exists in two double reed versions: one for oboe, English horn, and bassoon, and another for oboe and two bassoons.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808696). We Gather Together is one of the best known Thanksgiving hymns. It originated in the Netherlands in 1597 as Wilt Heden Nu Treden, written by Adrianus Valerius to commemorate a victory in the Dutch war of liberation from Spanish oppression. It was first published in Valerius’ 1626 collection of Dutch folks songs, Nederlandtsche Gedenck-Clanck. In 1877, the Austrian composer and conductor, Eduard Kremser, published arrangements for six songs from Valerius’ collection, one of which was Wilt Heden Nu Treden. Seven years later, American musicologist Theodore Baker wrote a modern English version of the hymn. It is Baker’s words and Kremser’s melody that are today sung as We Gather Together.  This arrangement consists of six versions of the Kremser tune. The first is a fairly straightforward melody-and-harmony rendition, except that Trumpet 1 begins solo, and the other instruments join the playing group one at a time. Succeeding versions consist of variations, until the final, which, for the four upper instruments, reverts to a simple statement of melody-plus-harmony. Tuba, on the other hand, has a wonderful running bass part. The piece ends with a brief diminuendo and ritardando repetition of the last four measures. The key signature changes twice: C to D and back to C. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. As for high notes: Trumpet 1 plays one quarter-note A above its staff; Trombone has two high-F eighth-notes.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 55 seconds. Published by Vanessa Klassen (A0.1135165). “Just a Closer Walk with Thee†dates back to the southern African-American churches of the nineteenth century, frequently being performed as part of a traditional New Orleans-style funeral march. Composer Kenneth Morris heard a train station porter singing the song while traveling from Kansas City to Chicago in 1940. The music became so prominent in his mind that Morris exited his train and took a different train back to the previous station to ask the porter to sing it again. Morris wrote down the music and lyrics and had the song published. The song soon became a standard in both the gospel and jazz genres and has since been recorded by numerous artists. The original author or composer is unknown. This arrangement for clarinet quintet is closely based on Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of the song which was featured on her 1967 album, “Brighten the Corner.†Ella’s voice is represented in the Clarinet 1 part which has been transcribed exactly as she sung. There is also a simplified Clarinet 1 part which is easier to read and allows the soloist more freedom to embellish as desired. The accompanying parts are the background vocals and upright bass, with the light piano riffs in the E♠Clarinet part. The E♠part may be omitted for an easier quartet version. The biggest challenge in this arrangement is the balance as the solo is often in the lower register of the clarinet (below the break).
