Published by EAMUSIC (A0.1283414). Obelisk is a work that was built as a response to the atrocious events happening in the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a composer who was born in Ukraine, I felt very deeply for the hardships of the people of my country and this work is a direct emotional response to the images I see and stories I hear. The central part of the work features pre-recorded interviews with some of the Ukrainian civilians telling their harrowing stories of loss, struggles, and fight for survival.  When I was a child, my parents made the difficult decision to leave the country due to the beginning of another war Russia’s Putin started in Chechnya and my parents knew - one day he would be coming for Ukraine. As someone who immigrated to Canada at a young age, I experienced all the difficulties associated with finding new life in a new country. I saw the struggles of my parents and now I see the struggles being experienced by people fleeing Ukraine.  Throughout the work you will hear the sonic accompaniment to the pain and suffering that Ukrainians undergo on daily basis, you will hear their voices and see images of the brutality committed against the people of Ukraine. This is a heavy work to experience, but as an artist I feel it is only appropriate to raise awareness around the issue and show the people the horrors going on in the world.    The title of the work was inspired by the famous monument erected in 2001 to mark the occasion of the 10thanniversary of Ukraine’s Independence from the Soviet Union. At that point it appropriately replaced the monument of Vladimir Lenin. Towering on top of Kyiv’s Independence Square (famously known as Maidan) at 200 feet, this obelisk celebrates the nature of the Ukrainian independent spirit and directly reflects my ideas through this musical composition with the hope that the powerful Ukrainian nation will prevail over its enemy once again.  This PDF includes Score and Parts.

(Songs for a Rainy Day) (S0.706285) 3-part choir arrangement for rehearsal or performances.This charming 3-Part choir arrangement is a quodlibet of three traditional songs about rain: Rain, Rain, Go Away; It's Raining, It's Pouring; and Pitter Patter Raindrops. It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs are sung at the same time. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Suitable for elementary aged students (range E4-D5), and perfect for a fall (autumn), spring, or early summer concert, or classroom instruction. Approximate performance time 1:40. Joanna Mills was the Gospel Choir Director at Roncesvalles United Church in Toronto, Canada for 20 years, and has been writing and arranging choral music for 15 years. Her compositions and arrangements are performed regularly by her own choir and others around the world and have won awards in songwriting competitions. She also teaches musical theatre, voice and piano.

This charming 2-Part choir arrangement is a quodlibet of three traditional songs about rain: Rain, Rain, Go Away; It's Raining, It's Pouring; and Pitter Patter Raindrops. It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs have been sung overlapping. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Suitable for elementary aged students (range E4-D5), and perfect for a fall (autumn), spring, or early summer concert, or classroom instruction. In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Only the first stanza and the refrain (which is sung twice) were approved in President Kuchma's official proclamation.This arrangement for Trombone Quintet, / Choir in the brass friendly key of d minor, is easily accessible to those students who play at the Adv. The first half,'Petition', starts with a plaintive melody that repeats in the other bassoon at various overlapping points creating anirregular cannon. Eventually a second melody emerges; the first melody now takes on a supportive role. A newmood created by these merged melodies is underscored by percussion. The simultaneous juxtaposition of these twomelodies, as well as the patterns emphasized by the percussion, foreshadows the main theme for the secondcomposition: 'Rain Dance'.'Rain Dance' is introduced with an irregular rhythmic motif, stated in unison by the bassoons, over a steadyrepeating pattern by the percussion. The percussion evolves and complements (and contrasts) the rhythmic partcreated by the two independent voices of the bassoon duo. A second theme, optimistic in temperament, is thenintroduced and is a rhythmic elaboration of the first theme. This second theme is an exact reiteration of the mergedmelodies from 'Petition' (however in this faster incarnation it is hardly recognizable). This is repeated in variousguises and the mood eventually becomes somewhat less certain.These two pieces represent two ideas; the plea for a reprieve from a dire situation - a drought and a petition to the'powers that be' for intercession, and the subsequent effort to bring about the desired change by taking matters intoone's own hands - a ritualistic dance to bring forth the needed deluge.

Entrainment (2009)Written for New Noise​Oboe & PercussionEntrainment is the process by which two oscillating systems, which have different periods when they function independently, assume the same period when interacting. The principle of entrainment is universal, appearing in chemistry, pharmacology, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, astronomy, architecture to name but a few.This piece explores the entrainment of tempo with two initially diverse tempo structures synchronising after a period of four minutes. At the start of the score the oboe begins at 137 bpm and the percussionist at 63 bpm. Over the course of the four minutes the percussionist speeds up whilst the oboist slows down resulting in the tempi synchronising at four minutes. After four minutes the two instruments begin a discourse in unison (rhythmically, melodically, and dynamically): the musical equivalent of total synchronisation. In the final section of the piece the parts diverge with the percussionist slowing down and the oboe part maintaining its speed.As with many of my pieces, the starting point for Entrainment was an external source, in this case the song Time by Pink Floyd. The rhythmic lines throughout Entrainment are based on the rhythm to the bass line of the first part of Time. This can be clearly seen in the opening in which the oboe part employs this rhythm.Harmonically Entrainment consists of a series of key centres whose period is determined by points within the four minutes where either of the two independent parts briefly synchronise at the semiquaver level with the unit of a second. At each of these points (which become more frequent as the piece progresses), the harmonic centre changes. The harmonic centres relate directly to the chord structure of Pink Floyd's Time: at each point where either part synchronises with seconds the harmonic centre in both parts moves one chord through Time's chord sequence. At 2' 19'' the percussion and oboe part synchronise (albeit briefly) for the first time. This event was used to mark the start of more polytonal harmony as both instruments from this point forward begin their own cycles through the Time chords. Throughout the piece, points of synchronisation are highlighted musically.Performance mp3 recordings that contain a dual click track for the first four minutes of the piece can be obtained by contacting guybunce@hotmail.com. The click track is arranged so that the oboe click is on the left channel and the percussion click is on the right. An alternative click track (track 3) is also provided using a different sound (a beep). The performers should wear the headphone in one ear which corresponds to the track of their part. The dual click track can then be played on a single CD player (or mp3 player) with the output going to both sets of headphones using a headphone splitter or other device. Alternatively, files can be put on either two iPods or Mp3 players. The players will then have to synchronize the beginnings of each track.It is possible to play the piece without the use of the click track(s). If this is the case, performers should use the metronome markings and general layout of the score to aid performance. It is advisable that one player (possibly the oboist) sets the tempo and tempo changes, and the other player follows.It was not always possible to represent accurately the relationship between the two parts in the score. Arrows have been added on the score to show points of synchronisation where the score layout differs.

Here is the 1931 Duke Ellington classic It Don't Mean a Thing (if It Ain't Got that Swing) done as a drum feature, with a very modern harmonic approach and aggressive melodic ideas. This fast swinging chart starts with energetic solo drum time, then the entire flute ensemble trades eights (as a soli based on motives from the melody) with the drums for two choruses before a brief statement of the melody. This is followed by open solos over the original changes, and an open drum solo. The chart then transitions to a half-time swing free-for-all with fragments of the melody flying in all directions, capped of by a brief return of the opening section. Not for the faint of heart, and definitely not the same old jazz flute choir experience! Scored for piccolo, five C flutes, alto and bass flutes, piano, bass, and drums, with optional guitar.

Published by Drake Mabry (A0.799462). Three Painters was a 2008 commission from the Conservatory of Music in Chalons, France. Each of the three movements is inspired by some of my favorite painters, in this case Yves Klein, Zao Wou-ki and Jackson Pollock for the first, second and third movements respectively. I first saw Yves Klein work on a visit to Balbao, Spain during an exhibit of his art at the Guggenheim Museum. There was a kind of giant sandbox filled with his famous blue pigment. The lighting created timbral shadows which varied depending on where the viewer stood. It was difficult to leave. I first saw Zao Wou-ki's paintings during an exhibit in Paris around 2000 – I don't remember where. The abstract shape and colors fascinated me and each work seemed to explore a different emotional perspective. And they were simply beautiful. In 1967 I began my music studies in New York and within a few months of arriving went to the Museum of Modern Art at W. 53rd street. On the way there I crossed paths with Moondog on the street near the museum dressed in his Viking outfit. From my first visit, the two artists I remember most vividly were Jackson Pollock and Alexander Calder. Jackson Pollock's art washed over my senses and I stared at One: Number 31 1950 for what seemed to be hours. And Calder's mobiles danced in slow motion and also captivated me. Someday I will write a work to pay homage to him. Three Painters depicts what I see in the works of these artists as sound over time. The first movement (Yves Klein) explores the subtle changing orchestrational timbres on the pitch 'F'. The second movement (Zao Wou-ki) uses the instruments without their reeds and/or mouthpieces resulting in waves of air sounds washing over the senses. The Third movement (Jackson Pollock) is a jazz-like romp which transfers his vibrant visual energy to a full-blown big band style played by the ensemble. The duration is 12 minutes.Three Painters was premiered by an ensemble conducted by Philippe Cambreling at the Auditorium, CRR de Chalon sur Saône, France on March 22, 2009.

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977042). At the request of a friend, this piece incorporates the melody of an old popular song from Taiwan’s Japanese period. It is a simple folk-like melody with words based on the image of flowers that were washed to the ground during a rainy night. Rain and Flowers is neither an arrangement nor a traditional theme and variations. Instead, it is a series of free improvisations on ideas from the song. Some of those ideas are musical, while others relate to images or meanings in the lyrics. Because I think the lyrics contain a sense of sadness and loss, there are times when that emotion comes through. The image of flower petals strewn on the ground was an important inspiration because it can be seen as being both beautiful and pitiful, or even tragic. Also, those petals can be contemplated in silence after the storm, or during the time when they are begin blown by the driving rain and fierce winds. For that reason, I portray various types of rain and wind as the piece progresses. However, because the original song was a simple melody written after the storm, that is where this piece ends, with a more obvious playing of the melody, though still in an improvisatory and folk-like way. The single downloadable file for this piece contains both the full score and violin part.
