It tells the story of a Woman and the Great Love in her life. This Love is called off to war, and she is so sensitive that she knows when the conflict has taken her Partner from her forever. She then has to deal with her loss and come to a point of release. The entire libretto is constructed from the poetry of the 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson. The music is modern yet melodically and harmonically accessible to audiences and performers alike. It is very powerful and communicates a great depth of feeling.

The song tells a story of a hard-working blue-collar woman, based on inspiration Summer found after the 25th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony (23 Feb 1983) when she attended an after-party. She encountered a restroom attendant named Onetta Johnson (whose name is mentioned in the song) whom she found sound asleep - despite a blaring TV - exhausted from working long hours.Summer related the story in an interview: I looked at her and my heart just filled up with compassion for this lady, and I thought to myself: God, she works hard for the money, cooped up in this stinky little room all night. Then I thought about it, and I said, She works hard for the money... She works hard for the money...This is it! This is it! I know this is it! The arrangement opens with an a cappella introduction in full harmony. The melody moves between the altos and sopranos, with each part otherwise providing rhythmic support (echoing the instrumental accompaniment). The sopranos divide into 3 parts occasionally, allowing some high voices (A-flat) to shine. There are no solos in this arrangement - your women all have opportunity to sing this powerful, true story that serves more broadly as an allegory for women's rights and socioeconomic hardship. The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano,baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music.The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. Rather, it takes herbeautiful words, and the fundamentals of her visions, and attempts to create a new narrative andspiritual experience from them.This is the full score. He has dedicated compositions to people. He has been inspired by people, but never composed anything that represents someone's personality the way Pearl does. Composed in October 2005, this work is the musical painting of the woman who would become the composer's wife almost two years later. Each musical aspect of the two movements symbolizes a different characteristic of Pearl's personality. Woven into the music is her quiet, caring, devoted nature, her love for God, her passion for the things she believes in, her wisdom, her logical and analytical approach to life, and her care-free disregard for the pressures that force many other women to be less than true to themselves. All of these facets of Pearl are portrayed through symbolism, atmosphere, and mood. The first movement is best described as unfolding. In an unassuming way, the piece unfolds like a delicate blossom confidently moving from bud to full bloom. This unfolding represents the gradual discovery of the depth of a personality as a relationship grows. The second movement represents the patient waiting associated with allowing a relationship to grow and mature. The subtle use of silence is symbolic of this patience, and adds richness to the piece. The debut performance of this remarkable composition formed part of the October 2008 Faculty Recital at Rice University, Houston, Texas. Pearl is appropriate for college or professional level musicians. As a serious work, Pearl makes an excellent recital piece. The unusual brass trio instrumentation for this work is an added bonus and makes the piece ideal for integration in a brass quintet repertoire, as it provides a rest opportunity for the trombone and one of the trumpets.The MP3 in the sample is only the first movement.

Published by Abierto Music (A0.1518018). This is a setting for unaccompanied soprano of selected passages from Revelations of Divine Love, by the 14th-15th century mystic Julian of Norwich. Her work is widely acknowledged to be one of the great Christian spiritual classics. It is also the earliest surviving book in middle English written by a woman. The short text was written soon after Julian recovered from a severe illness and describes sixteen visions that she had received: revelations of Christ's suffering and God's love. The second version (long text) was written perhaps twenty years later; it is a greatly expanded volume that includes her meditations on what she had been shown. This work begins with a spoken passage, the very first words of her work, directly followed by a soliloquy that includes some of Julian's best known quotations (e.g. all shall be well). I chose to adapt Julian's language into modern English, while remaining as faithful as possible to the style and intent of her original text. Composed in just three weeks in 1899, Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is a string sextet in one movement by Arnold Schoenberg. Whilst known better for tone rows, his dodecaphonic music and the Second Viennese School, Schoenberg was a master of harmony (writing a number of books on the subject) and, in his early life, was inspired by the music of Brahms and Wagner. This is his best-known tonal work. Its description as a tone poem is not surprising given it takes its inspiration from Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name, as well as Schoenberg’s strong feelings towards his future wife, Mathilde Zemlinsky, sister of his teacher, Alexander von Zemlinsky.The work is said to have five sections, one for each of the stanzas in the poem. The poem, from 1896, describes a man and woman walking through a dark forest on a moonlit night. The woman shares a secret with him, that she is pregnant but not with his child. The man reflects upon this before warmly accepting (and forgiving) the news.The work premiered on 18 March 1902 in the Vienna Musikverein by the Rosé Quartet. As was normal at the time, Schoenberg produced a string orchestra version that was premiered on 29 November 1916 in Prague, conducted by Zemlinsky, which was later revised in 1943 to better support the soloists, also adding more articulation/accents and tempo markings.Whilst the piece was controversial at the time, both musically and due to the poem’s “inappropriate” subject matter, Richard Dehmel himself was impressed, writing “I had intended to follow the motives of my text in your composition, but soon forgot to do so, I was so enthralled by the music.”This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass.
