The first section represents a funny and goofy person, which is followed with a second section that represents a logical and methodical person. The third section represents a light and sweet person. These section are alternated throughout the movement.II. OptimisteOptimiste is a french translation for 'upbeat'. This dance movement represents a group of people celebrating enjoy-fully with alcoholic drinks. However, eventually the after effects of alcohol will begin to affect them.III. IntensityIn this dance, it presents an intimate dance of Argentine Tango between two people. The connection between shows a range of intimate emotions, such as, passion, aggression and lust.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767472). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for Double Reed quintet 2 oboes, CA, Bassoon, ContrabassoonThe style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The contra leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the Bassoon. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the Oboe 1 with an obbligato on oboe 2 before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the Contrabassoon and Bassoon. The middle section has a mournful Contra melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.

These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.
